Anyone concerned about the "mosquito" talk?

Big rainfall yesterday. We came out of our room at CSR at about 8:45pm to watch the Star Wars fireworks. I got bit twice and a few mosquitos got into our room.

That's what I was afraid of. With so much rain can Disney really keep up?

Also, I heard if you spray around the frame of the door of your hotek room it might keep bugs from getting inside. I am definitely going to try that.

Disney does a great job trying to keep the mosquitos away. They were spraying the area yesterday morning near where I was bit last night. But nothing is 100% foolproof. FWIW, we've been for two weeks now and last night was the first time we were bothered by mosquitos. But if you are concerned, you should definitely wear spray.

Spraying your door frame sounds like a good idea too.

As We live here in the Orlando area it does concern me as my wife is pregnant. we did take advantage of the free spray on Monday @MK. But to be honest in recent memories I have only been bitten once at AK @ dusk. Disney takes a lot of measures to fight mosquitos.

The parks are giving out FREE bug spray. Walk up and they give you a mini bottle. I didn't take any because I don't need it, but it would covered my family of 4 multiple applications if we wanted.

Not quite. Disney is giving resort guests bottles of bug spray in their rooms. Guests in the parks can walk up and use the spray at each bug spray system, but guests can't take those bottles with them.

My sister's doctor just issued a "no travel to Florida" travel ban recommendation to her patients. My sister is pregnant so she is cancelling her trip with us for November because of doctor's strong recommendation.

This time, it's Zika. Yesterday my Amazon order arrived with Sawyer spray + lotion as well as the Repel lemon eucalyptus spray. It's a lot but we intend on giving them a trial run while camping this weekend.

I always happen to bring bug spray with me because living in Florida I am always used to our state bird being the most annoying thing on the planet. Im concerned but in my magic Disney bubble it wont be my first concern. The resorts are supplying spray for guests and each park has an area set up where you can get some for free! I love how Disney completely goes above and beyond to make each guests stay more memorable!!

Have your homemade recipes been scientifically tested and proven effective? If it has not, then you're just guessing about their effectiveness. Depending upon your location, travel history, and lifestyle factors, you could be taking unnecessary risks.

On the other hand, if your homemade products have been proven effective against this mosquito and Zika, please share the recipe! I'd love to avoid the stronger and stinkier ones.

To my knowledge the effectiveness of the ingredients used in my recipe have not been tested by EPA. I am ok with that as I a baby is not in my future. I typically get eaten alive while visiting the caribbean and the stuff I made has worked well for me and a few friends. I can't say that it will work well for you. I try my hardest to use products that have less toxic ingredients (deet has been shown to cause some problems) in order to try and help myself heal from autoimmune issues. Everyone is different tho and I completely understand folks gotta do what works for them.

I'm pregnant and have concerns about Deet so right now my hubby and I went the lemon eucalyptus route. Had an Ob appt yesterday and told her we don't feel comfortable using Deet and she totally agreed. She said she would rather have her patients use sprays with lemon eucalyptus, Picardin, or skin so soft. Down here, I keep hearing this commercial on the radio for Fit Organics mosquito repellent. It's supposed to be totally safe for pregnant women and children. I keep forgetting to look into it though.

They do safe that DEET is safe during pregnancy. Like I said, it's just super tricky being pregnant.

If I were pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, there is no way I'd take 'any' chance - would so not be worth it to me. Disney has no plans to go away anytime soon.
My babies health were far more important than a missed/planned vacation to a specific destination. Even a 'very' small chance of contacting Zika would totally be enough to keep me away.

I know, right! My last appt before this one was a couple days before the cases down here in south FL were confirmed. So going into this appt, I knew we were going to have the Zika talk and honestly, I thought I was going to get a lecture to use Deet. Felt some relief that she was fine with my decision to use lemon eucalyptus instead due to my concerns about Deet.

Also, their website and fb page say to make sure to use repellent and lists what is recommended on the cdc website, so I doubt they would tell other patients to stop using Deet if they were already doing so. I think by the way our conversation was going was why she told me she preferred to spray with the other stuff listed by the cdc than Deet.

This is my 4th pregnancy (which was a surprise). 1st trimester I had really bad nausea (and it's now finally subsiding). At around 8 wks, while they were doing the dating ultrasound, they found an ectopic pregnancy in the Fallopian tube, so I had emergency surgery for that. Luckily, it didn't affect the baby in the uterus. Now dealing with trying not to get Zika. Honestly, I haven't been really enjoying this pregnancy.

It looks like Canada has issued an 8/31 travel advisory for pregnant women to infected Florida counties, as well as a pretty broad statement that other areas are probably also risky, here are the highlights:

The Public Health Agency of Canada recommends that pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy avoid travel to countries or areas in the United States with reported mosquito-borne Zika virus.

The World Health Organization Zika situation report lists countries where there is reported mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission (countries listed under category 1 and 2 of Table 1 [pdf, 393KB]). In addition to these countries, the Ministry of Health of Singapore has recently confirmed locally transmitted mosquito-borne cases of Zika infection.

The state of Florida in the United States has reported cases of Zika virus infection transmitted locally by mosquitoes in areas of Florida.

• Pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy should avoid travel to the affected areas of Florida (see CDC map).
• There is potential transmission of Zika virus in and around areas with reported locally transmitted cases, even if cases are not yet reported.
• Pregnant women and those planning a pregnancy should consider postponing travel to other areas in Florida.

The risk is there, but personally, I'd say the media played this one out again like they did Avian Flu, West Nile, etc. Take the precautions if you are in the risk group, but be aware the risk isn't as high as everyone makes it out to be.

That being said, I don't plan on using any repellants or cancelling my June plans. Of course, I say this as an unmarried man.

- We did NOT get a bottle in our room. Maybe value don't qualify

- We were at all four parks and there were only full size containers on the tables that they were asking you to spray yourself to the side and return the spray to the table. Agree, there is no way those large spray or pump bottles were being given away. Not to say someone wouldn't just take one.

We are a bit concerned about a December trip - but for those who live in Florida, how much mosquito activity is there really over the winter? We have consistently gone in December year-after-year and have never seen a single mosquito from what I can recall.

I am 43 and have no interest in having babies. I am not worried about it. If I were 25 and wanting a family, I would stay home to be honest.
