Greetings from 80 degrees at the Lemonade Stand... a beautiful day here!!!!

SSB is driving to Asheville, NC tomorrow for Valentine's weekend. By any chance, any advice on things to do, places to eat, etc....?
I know that they filmed "All the Real Girls" there... that is about it for me. Appeared in the film to be quite beautiful surroundings.

Have not been able to find too much information on line, so hoping for some first hand advice! Staying at a bed and breakfast, which is a new experience also, so should be fun!

Help, please! :)

Sister (worm761) has been there and she says the state zoo is there and it is awesome!!!

All I know is it's beautiful and Stephen and I want to retire there in 6 years (since he won't go to Orlando).

But, have fun, whatever you do!

The zoo is in Asheboro not Asheville.

You could go to Biltmore Estate. That's really big with the tourists here. :wave2:

The Biltmore Estate is a fabulous old estate that offers interesting tours...the gardens are great, but of course there won't be much there this time of year. There is also a great arts and crafts store just off the Blue Ridge Parkway...lots of different items from NC artisans. Great hiking trails just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, too.

Asheville is a funky town that merges hip and country. There's lots of neat shops and crafts. It's more of a summer destination than winter, though. It is very near the Blue Ridge Parkway, so you can jump on it and have a scenic drive to the Great Smokey Mountains or Viriginia. I don't know how scenic it is in the winter, though!

There are quite a few movies that have been filmed in the area. For example, Last of the Mohicans and a new one just screened at Sundance, Into the Clearing. Several years ago, Being There was done at Biltmore House. Asheville has a lot of literary history. You can visit Thomas Wolfe's house and also see where F. Scott Fitzgerald hung out.

There's a fancy restaurant and spa at Grove Park Inn. There also are lots of other good restaurants, but I can't really recommend any b/c we eat at chez MIL when we're there.

Thanks, Mr. Dan...

Hitting the road for the 10 hours now.

Have a great weekend!!!

I'm probably too late, but JIC...

The Biltmore Estate is fabulous! They have wonderful restaurants there as well.

Shopping in Biltmore Village is pretty interesting, neat little shops. You'll find your basic chain restaurants, that we usually visit...Chili's, Outback, Texas Roadhouse (very good!), Red Lobster, Applebee's, Olive Garden, Carraba's (yummy!), etc... The only mom and pop's that I would really recommend would be Frank's Pizza, across from the Asheville Mall. Great Italian food and reasonable prices. Also, the Apollo Flame for fabulous Greek food - near the Biltmore Square Mall.

Have fun! :teeth:

Did end up going to the "Biltmore Estate".... wowsa!!!!

Way more than SSB (or Jennifer) imagined... way cool!

12 hours to get back due to traffic and weather (just now)... but a ton of fun.

Thanks for info.

I'm glad you had a great weekend SSB. :)

SSB- I am also in awe of Biltmore.

A quirky little movie from 1979 that I love, "Being There" with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine, is set there. It has some gorgeous shots of the exteriors and the grounds...

Sheesh, sorry to bump up such an *old* thread.....but wanted to thank KathyTX for that nifty bit of trivia.

Being There is a favorite movie....such a sweet little story.

SSB, glad ya had a good time and glad ya made it back safely.

That is some good trivia...!!!

Will be interesting to see the film again now, with that in mind...!
