Anyone an expert on Apple desktops?

My sister has a Mac desktop that is fried. She gets a blinking ? when she boots it up. She called geek squad but they told her they can't fix it as they would have to take the whole computer apart.They said it was the hard drive. She's going to make an appointment at the apple store but does anyone have an idea what could have happened? I thought macs didn't get viruses.

Sounds like it could be a hard drive failure. That wouldn't be a virus. Hard drives fail, they just do...Mac and PC.

Take it to the Apple Store. Does she have Apple Care?

Yes it sounds like the hard drive. I had a hard drive completely fail in my Imac just two months after getting it. Needless to say I was not a happy camper having to transport the whole thing an hour away to the Apple store to get it fixed.

My MacBook's hard drive failed after three years. We have AppleCare, so they replaced it free of charge. Totally worth having the AppleCare!

Take it to the Apple store and they will take care of it.

Hard drive failure is a hardware problem, not software or virus related. Can happen to any machine made by anyone. Our iMac HD died last year and they couldn't fix it so they replaced the entire machine under warranty - we lost a lot of data and went two weeks without our machine while they tried to fix it and then replaced it, but we got a 2009 iMac to replace our older 2008 version with the new 2009 software as well so we came out ahead in the deal in the end!

We've always had great service from Apple.

It's the hard drive, not a virus. I had that happen at a time that I was really lazy about backing stuff up; I lost a bunch of pictures and it broke my heart.

Actually, I think I'll run the back ups of my back ups now, lol!

Even though all Mac people have posted this really isn't a Mac issue. I've had Dells and eMachines and Gateways and 2 HPs all with failed hard drives. I just recently had one of my back up externals fail.

It is a good reminder for everyone to back up important data!

Yea any hard drive can fail if you have the computer long enough-and like other. computer components some of them are just bad.

yeah lots of people think that-ANY operating system can get a virus-its just that since the objective of the virus writer is to take down as many systems as possible and very few enterprise systems use a MAC OS there arent as many written that target them.

Just had this happen less than a month ago. It was a hard drive failure and Apple replaced the HD free of charge. I tried to get the data saved because I had not backed up, but it couldn't be done. So, I have a new HD and a new external backup drive. I will never be without AppleCare ever again!

Sounds like a hard drive failure. If the computer has AppleCare, they'll replace the hard drive and it'll be good as new.
