Anyone able to answer a question about hand luggage??

Hey guys! Just wondered if you could clear something up for me please?? It states on my e-ticket for my flight that I can only have one item of hand luggage and my handbag has to either be my one item of hand luggage or be inside whichever bag I choose to use for hand luggage. This I'm ok with but if I had say a book/newspaper or my document holder as well as my bag I'm using as hand luggage, do I have to faff about with putting whichever item away in my bag before boarding and then try not to hold anyone up getting it out of my bag again as soon as we get on the plane? Sorry if this seems somewhat garbled or just plain dumb kind of a question but it doesn't seem logical to do the latter IMO. TIA!

Who are you flying with?

I usually have a larger all purpose bag but have a handbag as well - although I am prepared each time to put my handbag inside the bigger bag, it has never been an issue yet so you may not have to worry

I've also never had to put my handbag inside my carry on. I honestly don't think that it will be a problem!

Scheduled airlines allow you to have a handbag or laptop bag as well as the cabin bag. Charter and budget airlines can be more strict. When I flew with BMI Baby last year they made us all put our document holders and small handbags into the cabin bag. Others don't seem to faff.

Are you going with Thomsons? I'd just make sure that it can easily fit into the cabin bag and carry it separate. As long as you know you can put it in easily if requested, you won't have a problem

Oh I'm sorry, I didn't necessarily mean that is a rule. Apologies if my post was badly worded. Each airline has their own little rules and regulations so you have to check specifically what the policy is for yours. I was just saying that it is a lot more common for charter airlines to have more restrictions and lower allowances than the scheduled airlines which tend to allow more and give a bit more leeway. Even then, it varies greatly from one airline to the next.

My brother did a longhaul a few days ago with Emirates. They get a healthy 30kg hold allowance. Hand luggage? 6 kg! BA allows 23 for hand luggage, just to show how extreme the differences can be and both of those are scheduled airlines.

You need to have a look and see what the policy is for who you are flying with.

Thanks, will check with them. It is Thomsons we're flying with (CAN'T WAIT! Premium Economy on new Thomson Dreamliner! Hope it's as FAB as it looks! ) Thomson are like Emirates. We have 27 kilo luggage allowance and 7 kilo hand luggage allowance.

Have you paid extra for 27kg?
This is what it says on Thomsons website:

"Upgrade to Premium Club on Thomson Airways flights and you’ll get a baggage allowance of 23kg as well as 7kg hand baggage"

Yeah, they let you buy an extra 5 kilo so that works out as 28 not 27.. must've miscalculated. But you are right, you do normally only he 23 kilo unless you pay for the extra. At the time I was thinking souvenir and fancy dress take up a lot of room. Sorry, I should've stated that!

Also, should probably state that the ability to buy extra may only apply to Premium Club passengers as there's a weight limit to what they take on the plane (apparently). Not sure if that's because it's the new Dreamliner and will be changed in future or what but it says it in the small print that came with my e-tickets

The 23kg hand luggage with BA always makes me smile, I couldn't lift it let along struggle on a plane with that weight. It does mean though that anything slightly heavy newly bought goes in the hand luggage coming home

I have all my camera gear, laptop and other stuff in my hand luggage. It weighed just under 20 kg last year I'm ok to lift it because I use a wheeled cabin bag so it is just the one lift that has to be done. I also try and be first to grab mine from the overhead locker before anyone around me moves just in case ........

I bought a hand held luggage scale as we were terrified we'd go over our allowance. We had 23kg hold allowance with Delta and I assumed 5kg cabin baggage. We took around 11kg each going and 18 - 22kg returning so were well within our limits. What amused us was the internal Delta flights Atlanta - Orlando and return, where the US passengers have massive cabin bags, plus other bags, plus pillows!

We did notice that no one checked our carry on bags at all from Manchester - Atlanta - Orlando. We commented we could have had any kind of hand luggage with us, no one seemed bothered at all.
