My brother is looking to change careers. He sells dental supplies. He has been at the same place for 10 years. He says he needs a change even if he makes a lot less money. He loves tools, so he thought about looking for work at either place.

Anybody work there? What do you like or not like about it?

Unless there are not any around, he would be better off going to a smaller store. Those chains may hire a few people who know things, but they hire about half of what they should and the few experts have nothing but a hard time.

I work at Lowe's, and have since just before my store opened. Personally, I love my job (I am a cashier right now), love my store, love my managers, and really like most of my co-workers. If you, or your brother, have any specific questions, let me know, I will be happy to answer the best I can.

Does Lowes and/or Home Depot have health insurance? If yes, do you have to be full time to get it or do they offer it to part timers?

I think he wants to work FT ( well that part is for sure ) where a company will work around his family life better. Money really isn't his first priority.

Papa, my ex has worked for Home Depot starting right out of high school 13+ years ago. Honestly unless your brother can get in a dep't with a set schedule, it is exteremly tough on family life (hence the now ex...) The swing shifts are very tough. But there are some positions that are set he would have to talk to them and get it straight in the beginning. Very good benefits, stock options etc. Any specific questions just ask...

My DH just left Home Depot after 3 years. The hours were tough - he started out on night shift, and then for about 2 years he worked a rotating schedule, always including weekends (he had 1 full weekend off a month). We also found that the health insurance offered in our area was not very good - definitely not as good as the health plans I was used to from my employers. He did like the people he worked with, just not his managers (he was a department head). I think working at Home Depot is very similar to working for any other national corporate retail chain - actually a lot of people left Home Depot and went to Best Buy.

I think DH and I have both figured out we like working for smaller companies. He left Home Depot to go to a much smaller local lumber yard with about 80 employees. He likes it there much better than Home Depot.
