As some of you may remember, my DS (18yo) recently got a part time job at McDonald's. The manager continually is scheduling him 38 hours per week. He is still in 12th grade - set to graduate in May. He is my only and so I don't hav much experience with teens geting jobs - but to me 38 hours is a full-time job. I asked him to quit if after talking to the manager he was not granted less hours while still in school. The manager wants him 38 hours or a bunch of hours every weekend with closing (some of you may remember the gang fight in the restaurant on his 2nd night). Anyway, he did quit this job and I am glad - I am never one for quitting, but in this case I daw no alternative. He is going to find another part-time job, but isn't 38 hours excessive for a 12th grader??

While 38 hours is still part time in my eyes there is no way I would have ever worked that while still in school!!! I actually was only allowed to work weekends and maybe once in a while a few hours on a week night. I usually only put in about 10-20 hours a week. I don't think I could have done all I did for school and worked any more than I did. Glad that he quit!

38 hours is considered part time. But, I'm glad he quit. He can't do all he needed to do and work that many hours too.

Actually part time/full time depends on who you work for. My co. says 35 hrs is full time. I have seen others that are adamant it is 40 and others that go as low as 30 being full time.

I worked for K-Mart in high school and after for awhile. And they worked me about that much (38 hrs). They considered it part time so they didn't have to offer me benefits. It sure felt like full time work to me!

My company is full time over 30 hours.
Your son is 18, therefore no longer a minor, probably can work as many hours as he is willing, depending on state law. I agree that 38 hours while in school, esp. senior year, is way to many for anyone.

The university here consideres 37.5 hours fulltime. Most other employers consider 40 f/t. Unemployment considers f/t based on the industry standard (whatever that means).

Alot of companies consider 32 hours full time, after a certain amount of weeks, as goes to benefits. I would not let a hs'er work this many hours during the school year. You only have one senior year and before your son knows it, lots of his friends will be off to college all over the country. Kids need time to be kids and an extra fifty bucks a week is not worth the trade off in my opinion. I know alot will disagree with me, but there will come a time when you have to work, and work hard, and when you won't be able to turn down extra hours.

In my book, 38 hours certainly is full time. I had a job working 37.5 hours per week, got paid for 40 hours. 37.5 was full time.

Our business considers anything over 32 hours to be full time. Back when I was in high school, my parents restricted me to 15 hours max. 2 hours on weekdays and 5 on Sat.

My current employer full time is 30yrs/wk or more

I have had other jobs that its 37.5hrs/wk and 32hrs/wk that were considered fulltime.

But for a person in his senior year of high school I wouldn't want them working more than 20 - 25hrs/wk - unless they were in a job that directly related to their future occupation - they were getting more than a paycheck from it. Only MHO:D

Actually I worked two jobs in high school and they did probably equal 38 hours a week towards the end of the school year.

I really did prepare me for working.. it wasn't a shock to my system.

I also worked full time and went to college full time as well.

When I worked part-time for Meijer for a summer job, I was scheduled for 38 hours a week. Since I was part-time, I wasn't eligible for benefits. I had planned to keep the job during the year while I was in college. I requested a maximum of 20 hours a week, preferably between 10-15 and I was willing to work the closing shifts. When they said, "We can't promise it will be less than 30 hours" I quit. A wonderful decision in hindsight.

How did his grades hold up? So many kids don't do well because they don't have the time to study anymore and even when they do have time, they're too tired.

At my job, 35 hrs is considered full-time and benefits are offered.

I think you did the right thing in asking him to find another job. Your son's primary "job" right now is school. You only get to be a senior once and grades are also a consideration. Keeping his GPA up is important to college acceptance. I think part-time jobs for kids help them learn responsibilty and money management but a work week that is just 2 hours short of a regular 40 hr week is way too much in my opinion.

Hope he finds a part-time job that truly is part-time soon.

our company also considers 32 hours+ full time.
