Anybody Not Take Mid-day Breaks In The Summer?

if you read my post previous, i'm really only doing 1 full day at MK - definitly taking breaks in the park and probably heading out after dnr.

most of the other days except AK is 1/2 or 3/4 days - we'll definitly be utilzing the pool.......

I think your plan is fine and you sound like you'll be watching your kids for signs that they need a break, so you should be fine.

Our first trip (me and DD, then 5), we didn't take any breaks. But we also were not in commando or marathon mode. She needed a lot of sleep at night, which meant that we were not at the parks when they opened and never stayed until anywhere near closing, so perhaps we didn't need the break as much as if I'd tried to push her limits. Even so, I let her play in water when we saw that, we did air conditioned rides, and we did pour ice water over our heads sometimes. (OK, we were being silly and I started it to make her laugh, but it helped, lol.) Whether or not you schedule a formal break, it's all about staying within your own child's tolerance level. I really don't look at your schedule and think "Oh my, way too much for any kid!"........

We did a lot of different things. My DH is the type that would stay from opening to closing and beg for me, so I had to be the Break Enforcer.

On our first AK day, we stayed all day until the parade. Then we went back to the YC and swam and ate a late dinner and didn't go back to a park.

On the first MK day, we ate a relaxing lunch, then rode a few more rides, then went back to the YC. Later, we walked over for the fireworks at Epcot.

On our first MGM day, we rode the boat back to YC in the middle of the day, then returned to MGM for dinner and Fantasmic.

On our first Epcot day we stayed until mid afternoon (nice relaxing lunch at LeCellier). We could have gone back to a park in the evening but no one wanted to.

Then we moved to the Contemporary. On another MK day we went to the CR to swim in the afternoon, then had dinner at the Poly, then returned to the MK.

On our second MK day we went later (for the WS) then stayed until after Illuminations.

On our last MGM day we had to stay all day with no break because Fantasmic
had been rained out the last time and we wanted to see it. But we did have a nice long dinner which refreshed us.

I have to admit that one reason I insisted on some kind of break was that we were paying so much for the great hotels, and I wanted to enjoy them, too!

When we went last August we took breaks in the afternoon to go swimming at the hotel. I think the key for us was actually getting the pool and relaxing. Then our evening park touring was different from our morning.

I have been in Midtown in July, my DW lived there for several months and I would visit on the weekends throughout the summer. Trust me when I tell you Orlando in the summer makes NYC look cool and refreshing. I vowed I would never complain about the heat and humidity in NY ever again after what it was like down there. It was our first time goingin August and we were prepared but it was still intense. In particular with young children you need to be carefull. It is so easy for them to get over tired and dehydrated at WDW. We had the benefit of it being at the end of August and the crowds were non existent. By using TGM most rides were a walk on or less than 5 minute wait. I can't imagine going there during July and waiting in long lines in that heat and humidity.

September so i'm hoping the lines won't be so so bad. We will definitly be taking a break for a sit down meal 1x a day plus another cs meal. the kids will be able to cool off in sprinklers etc.

I too want to enjoy my hotel and i think i will -- arrival day stay by pool 2nd day just spend 1/2 - 3/4 day at epcot then back to pool our Off day - pool all morning/afternoon also our last day.........

Well thanx for all the responses - i'll let you know when we get back what we actually wound up doing............

What we have done on some of the hotter days (we went July 05) is the make sure we hit anything ac'ed in the heat of the day. The 3d movies are great for this. Future world in Epcot is also great. I also make later PS for lunch

We went to Magic Kingdom June 13, 2005. It was 96 degrees and we were there from open 'til close with our nine year-old and six year-old. By about 3:30 p.m., I needed to find some air conditioning cause I was feeling nauseous. My kids however, never wore out. They wore their swimsuits under their clothes and took plenty of breaks in the water areas. Their favorite one was the ship across from Mickey's house. My only advice is bring PLENTY OF WATER. We put our water bottles in the freezer the night before and they slowly defrosted throughout the day. I think the more water you consume, the better you’ll feel.

The second day we went back to Magic Kingdom we chose to swim until about 2 p.m. at our hotel and then we stayed at MK from about 3:30 'til close. It was a much more pleasant experience the second time around.

My opinion-- if you're going to be there for longer than, say, 3 or 4 days, the afternoon breaks are a necessity so that you don't burn out by the end of your trip. If you've only got a couple of days and want to squeeze in the maximum, you might consider skipping the breaks.

Really, though-- if it's particularly hot and you don't take a break, you might do fine that day-- but I wouldn't plan on being up for park opening the next day.
