I've had my dd to the ped. twice this week and she insists it is a virus that has something to do with her throat. But her fever goes higher each day, and now it is 104.3. The Motrin brings it down, but as soon as it wears off, the fever heads right back up. We are due to leave for WDW on Sunday and I don't know if we should go. The doctor seemed to feel that since this is the third day with the fever, that we will see it start to drop. But it only seems to climb higher. The luke warm bath doesn't even help. The only other symptom that she has is coughing. The higher the fever goes, the more she coughs.
I was just wondering if anyone else is going through this with their kids?:confused3

I don't know if this will help, because I'm an adult, and I'm in the Boston area, but the other day, Tuesday , I was so sick. I had a headache, body aches and fever, stayed out of work. The next day I was a little weak and still had a scratchy throat, by today I feel fine.

Wednesday someone else I work with had the same thing and it went through the same cycle.

Something is going around I think, at least up here. But this sounds like she has something more than what we had. That is an awfully high fever to keep coming back. I'd make sure she's okay. Have the ped. do some tests? Maybe strep throat?

I hope your DD feels better!

My dd had something similar to that about 5 years ago. It was a coxsackie virus type thing. For the life of me, I can't remember what it was called. But the fever was really high, really fast. Then about 5 days into it, she started getting these sores in her mouth and throat. She ate soft food for a bit and it went away. Oh, I think it might have been called Fifth's Disease. Could be wrong tho.

The only time my children had a high fever that just would not go away is when they had the flu last Winter.

My DD was talking in circles and not making any sense because her fever was so high.

Our Dr. always says to bring them in if it has been 4 days and the fever won't go away.

How about her appendix? Any pain in the abdomen?

Sorry I can't be of more help. Follow your gut, you can always take her to the ER if you feel she is getting worse.

Good luck.

My son had a high fever for five days two months ago. Up and down spiking.

Took hom to ER for tests Just a virus. However, he had to drink tons of water because he was dehydrated.

Good luck, fevers are so scary.

herc.

They ruled out strep, and the urine test was negative. The doctor did say something about it being a virus in the hand-foot-mouth catagory, but that isn't is exactly. I just can't believe how high the fever is going!!!

There is a virus called hand, foot, & mouth disease. It's a warm weather virus, very common. Your child may get sores on the palms of hands and feet and in the mouth.

Good luck!

We are familiar with hand-foot-mouth but this isn't it....

I certainly hope your DD gets better, it's tough to be sick when everyone else is outside playing! Give her a cool washcloth to the forehead for me!

You know....most ALL viral illnesses include fevers as a symptom. Any virus can cause a fever, and I've read where school age children usually contract anywhere from 7-10 viral illnesses per year. Some are shorter lived than others, some stick around for almost a week, and then peter out.

104.3 seems like such a scary temp, but look at your child, not the thermometer. And, yes, when it's time for another dose of Motrin, her fever WILL be back up! People bring their children in all the time saying, "I gave Tylenol, and three hours later his temp is back up!" Well, yes. The Tylenol wore off. It is intended to reduce the discomfort of fever, not cure the illness. Until the virus or infection is gone, the fever will be there. Tylenol and Motrin alternated every three hours is what all the MD's I work with recommend.

Here's how to dose: For every 2 pounds ( or 2.2 pounds for you math purists) your child weighs, give 10mg of Motrin, and 15mg of Tylenol. For example, if she weighs 30 pounds, give her 150mg Motrin, or 150mg Tylenol. Motrin comes in 100mg/teaspoon, and Tylenol comes in 160mg/teaspoon. I know most people think that is too complicated, but kids come in all shapes and sizes, and what is on the box might not be right...dose by weight, and dose ON TIME! Don't wait an extra hour just because the fever isn't back up. Keep it away! A couple extra doses of Tylenol or Motrin will not harm her, and might help her make it through the recovery feeling a tad better too!

My daughter's boyfriend has flu-like symptoms with high fever this week. He also has mosquito bites. He called his doctor's office and they wanted him to come in and have a spinal tap to check for West Nile Virus but he did not want to. They asked him to come in and have a blood draw so they are going to try to check for WNV from that. We are in Montana and WNV has not really been up here yet but they are expecting it any time now.

I can't give her Tylenol because of the food dye in it, so I have to stick with the dye-free Motrin. And to look at her when her fever is under 103, she seems okay. Once it head up to 104, she starts with the chills, and shivers, etc. I gave her the Motrin an hour ago and now she wants to go outside. I just hope we have the right diagnosis. Last year a child down the street nearly died of an intestinal bacterial illness. I can deal with a virus, if that is what it really is!
As far as mosquito bites, she got ONE about a week ago.

That's what it could be. My DD was out for two weeks! Another tell tale sign is if her cheeks look red like there were slapped.

Good Luck! There is nothing like having a sick child and all the Doc keeps telling you it's a virus!

Although I must add.... when DD had Fifth's Disease she had no fever and no cold or flu symptoms.... just the rash...............P

I don't know how old your DD is. Could be rubealla (I don't know if I spelled that right) more commonly known as "baby measels". It generally hits kids under the age of 3, but I suppose it could get an older child. I don't know though. I do know that a VERY high fever is associated with it.

If it's been several days then I would insist the doctor give you a diagnosis or continue to work it up. Many doctors will right it off to "just a virus" when it's only 24-48 hrs. I would call them Sat. Morning-- you may need to make a trip to the ER-- more for peace of mind--- then you'll know better if you should leave on Sunday. I hope your DD gets better quick!!

My 4 y/o DD had the same sort of sympotms about a month ago. Turns out she had roseola. The fever finally broke after about 4 days, but then she broke out into a rash over her stomach, back and neck. Luckily, it didn't itch but it did cause me great concern. It is supposed to be a common ailment in children under 3, so her occurrence was somewhat rare. Hope this helps.
