have any of you ever owned a mainecoon? i had to put mu cat to sleep and while he wasnt full blooded mainecoon i would love to get one that is. i have heard that they are very gental tell me your experiences.

I rented a room for a year w/ a girl who had one. He was very sweet, but oh my crackers, the hair!!! It was everywhere, all the time. After I moved out, I was still finding hair in my belongings for years. :scared1: Plus, she let him climb all over the counters and stove. Yuck!!!

I had a main coon named annabelle. I loved that cat so much. She was like a little furry person. She LOVED people food. She would take a cookie right out of your hands. The hair really does get everywhere though, and she would climb all over any and everything. One of her favorite spots was on top of the entertainment center. I'd get another in a heartbeat. I don't remeber her ever clawing or biting out of anger. Ours was a rescue, and she took quite a while to warm up to us, but she was the sweetest, smartest cat I've ever known. Good luck!

They are the giants of the cat world. The hair can be a problem I vacuum twice a week at least. The one we have is about 24 pounds but he’s such a big baby. We also have a female shorthair that’s about 13 pounds that will kick his butt if she gets the chance.

We had one. Sheila. She was the best cat ever. However, as she aged we had to have her groomed and eventually shaved because of mats in her fur. She just couldn't maintain it.

She also wasn't the heartiest cat. She had thyroid surgery and something else that is escaping me at the moment.

She played fetch with balls and other cats toys. She also loved people food and would jump on the table and steal your food like I dog might if you weren't looking.

I have the most beautiful Maine Coon kitty... well she's 10yo but she's still my kitty!

We also adopted a half MC last year, you couldn't find two more different personalities if you tried.

My 10yo, Xena, is regal, brilliant and reserved. The baby is obnoxious, mean and adorable... if you can imagine that!! :lmao:

My neighbor has 4 maine coons and they are all great cats. She has to keep them brushed in order to keep up with all the hair. In the summer two of her cats loved to have their fur shaved. When she gets out the hair clippers the cats come running and sit and let her shave them.

They definitely get matts. I forgot to mention this. Annabelle's problem areas were her "arm pits" and "hips" (I can't think of another way to name that area haha) brush your cat a lot, to help with matts or have them professionally groomed. They have too much hair to handle on their own. ;)

Its been several years, but I believe Annabelle had kidney failure. :guilty:

We had two Maine Coons, Regis and Maggie. They were the best cats EVER! They were so smart and gentle. You must brush their coats and it helps to get them groomed every once in awhile. Be prepared for hairballs.

That being said, I wouldn't hesitate to get another Maine Coon. They had the best personalities and they will really bond with you, like a dog does. They died within five months of each other and I was so depressed, I couldn't commit to another pet for nearly five years. We have a shelter kitty now and as sweet as she is, I miss the traits of the Maine Coons.

I have had two. One in my childhood and one as an adult. Wonderful cats. Very smart and very friendly. Sheffield lived until he was 20. Unfortunately, China really enjoyed lying on the hot concrete in the sun. One morning she was enjoying the sun on the front porch so I let her stay there and went inside to do a few things. I forgot she was out there for about an hour. By the time I went out to get her, she was gone. I put up signs, I checked vets, humane society, even the department that picks up roadkill. Never a sign from anyone. She just vanished. I'm still sad about it 7 years later. I only hope someone took her in and is giving her a good life. :/

Now we only have our Siamese. Anyone wanna ask my about our siamese?? That cat is the single biggest pain in my ***! :p The only way to keep her quiet is to ensure she always has her warm electric blanket bed turned on. Very picky about her litter box. Whines to go outside once it gets warm out. Doesn't care if you tell her to be quiet. She will look right at you and REOW again. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Oh, and before you ask...she is fixed. You should have heard her before she was! She has iron will. She puts the fear of God into the dogs. *sigh*

Her biggest annoying attribute is that she has an uncanny knack for knowing when DH and I are getting hot and heavy and she will jump up and do her best to break it up. Sometimes I swear she is DH's ex-girlfriend reincarnated!
