Sheesh we just finished with the first week of the second marking period and my eldest is now on his third backpack! The other two were totally destroyed. I cant figure out how he manages to get them so torn up. Bottoms coming out, wheels falling off, straps tearing loose. If I didnt know better I would swear he was letting the school bus run over them LOL!! We finally went to Sports Authority today and got him a modified hiking backpack. Im hoping the reinforcement in it helps. Is it just my kid or do others go through backpacks like this?

My younger DS is like that. It's the same with shoes - he can go through shoes and backpacks about 3 to 1 to what his older brother does. Some kids are just like that - really rough. I'm just thankful that both my DS's aren't like that!

My kids were the same way until be bought from either LL Bean or Lands End.

My son didn't like any of those choices this year, so we bought a JanSport at Kohl's. I'm anxious to see if it makes it through the school year.

I know how. I see it all the time. They grab them by the straps and swing them around.........sometimes just swinging, sometimes swing-kick-swing-kick, sometimes into another kid, sometimes into the ground or a tree.............they turn them around with the backpack wheels on the ground and them behind it, and use it as a battering ram to other backpacks and walls...............they take each others' and throw them up into trees for them to retrieve.........they throw them into a corner of the cafeteria, playground, wherever, in a pile and kids walk on them looking for their own..................I see this with binders, backpacks, sweaters and jackets every day before and after school.........I talk to at least one kid a day about who bought it, where the money came from (working hard), and respecting property and their parents by taking care of their things.

Typical kid stuff! Gotta love 'em, they're only young once!

jansport back packs have lifetime guarantees, now questions asked. At least they did when my kids were going thru these like crazy.

I've loved the back packs from Lands End. DD would get bored with the color before they wore out.

Yes dd is like that!! When we were in wdw this summer, she bought a nightmare before christmas bag for school. The entire bottom seam came out of it! I was able to sew it back together, but heck that thing was expensive!!

Thanks for the suggestions on Lands End and LL Bean. I will check those out if this new one goes the way of the other two.

paigevz so THATS how they get destroyed! My eldest is in the first year of middle school but Im sure a lot of what you said still holds true for him. I have actually seen him do the wheeled backpack forward thing LOL!!!

Im glad Im not the only one who has to purchase multiple backpacks per year LOL!

We bought one last year at Gap and we are using it again this year.

Christine,
My DD bought a Jansport backpack in 7th grade and used it until she graduated high school last year. It's still in great shape!

DS bought a Jansport in 6th grade and got a new one (another Jansport) this year, but only because he wanted a different color and style. He uses the old one for campouts, etc.

I find rolling back packs take more abuse. Up until this year DS could use the same Jansport booksack two or three years before he wanted another. Even then it was because he wanted either a bigger one or another color.

This year he has a rolling on and it is getting holes in the bottom of it.

LL Bean.

My son was going through backpacks like crazy till I purchased an LL Bean backpack. Don't waste your money on others that will just fall apart.

I agre that the Land's End are great. My kids are tired of theirs but they are in great condition. :)

Yep .. My kids go thru them like crazy too...

My ds likes the kind you wear on your back.. He had it 3 days and it had a tear in it  My dd has a rolling backpack because she has scoliosis and wears a brace so I dont allow her to carry anything on her back and she tears the wheels up everytime she gets a new one..

We buy my son's from The Gap. They are very strong and have extra support for the back and shoulders. They run us about $35, but when you don't have to replace it before the end of the school year, I find I get my moneys worth.

I have to agree with the Jans Sport, my DD12 is using hers for the third year. My DD21 still uses hers and she's had it about 6 years. They used it for school and then things like camping also.

Sometimes it's the books that tear the other backpacks, they are just to heavy.

They used to. Then I bought some LL Beanbackpacks last school year. They made all through last year, and since they were so expensive, this year as well. They were tired of the color for this 2nd year, but I told them too bad--you'll live with it!

LL Bean also states if they rip or whatever, they can repair or if its too far gone, replace the backpack.

Our Land's End is on it' third year. A little dirty on the bottom, otherwise all in working order. We use it to travel in the summer too!

DS's have managed to 'destroy' the LLBean's too BUT, they come with a life time guarantee so all you ever have to buy is one. Call them, get a service number, pack it up, send it back and you will get a new one.
