Our Hunter (yellow Lab) has yeast infections in his ears every time I turn around. The vet, this time around, suggested he might have food allergies! (Did I hear ching, ching$?) He put Hunter on a brand by Hills, which was rather expensive and only available thru a vet so when I ran out I went to Petsmart and purchased an allergy formula by Nature's Recipe. However, I was doing some research on yeast infections in dogs and learned that some live organisms in the food are necessary to rid the dog's body of the yeast infection and most processed dog foods don't have them:confused: There is a product on the market called "Nzymes", which is a food supplement that advertises putting these live organisms back into the dog. I'm thinking of trying that, along with his new food. I'm also making sure to check and clean his ears every week.
Does anybody else have a dog with yeast infections and what are you doing to keep it in check? Where is Doc Rafikki when you need her?????

My Basset Hound, Webber, used to get them a lot. Apparently they are quite common is Bassets due to their long ears. Anyway, the vet gave us drops that worked very well. However, we haven't had to use them for about 5 years as our Rottweiler, Fredo, cleans his ears for him. Yep, weird (& kind of gross) but true. I love my doggies!!

I know you didn't ask, but here's a shot of Webber:

My golden can be a 'walking yeast infection'!! We found that he didn't do well on food with chicken or corn in it. He eats a lamb and rice food now (California Natural). For his ears, I try to remember to put alcohol/vinegar drops in once a month or so. It's a 50/50 solution. The alcohol dries it out and the vinegar kills stuff.

Our pup had them too. They said to put him on lamb & rice food because something in the regular dog food promotes these infections? Anyway, he hasn't had one since, and I just buy the B.J.'s brand of it, not a fancy brand.Good luck.

My daughter's dachshund has ear and skin problems caused by an endemic yeast infection - give your dog a spoonful of yogurt with live cultures daily. spray the inside of the ears with a solution of natural vinegar and water (this will help change the environment within the ears and retard the yeast).

I have 2 dachshunds and 1 very regularly cleans the ears of his brother .....

Hoosll, That sounds like a great idea! I think I'll go out and buy some yogurt! How much do you think I should give an overweight Labrador???

The groomer I spoke with told me that just a spoonful a day would help. It gives some live bacteria cultures to the tummy and it takes time to change the whole ecosystem but it will help restore the dog's balance which can be affected by age, food, drugs, etc.

Good luck.
