Anna Karenina with Oprah? Anybody want to put together a little book group either here or on her site? I know I'm a little behind, as I just got the book yesterday, but I plan to play "Catch Up" today.

Anybody else reading anything else this summer or want to put together a book group NOT having to do with Oprah? I have quite the stack of reading for this summer and they all look really good!

Let me know! I would love to partake in some discussions or share some wonderful books with you!

Oprah is reading my favorite book? I don't watch the show, does she read a little bit each time? I'll certainly follow along on here. Oprah has good taste.

I read the book years ago, loved it. but I'm not reading along with Oprah.

Oh Hooray! People did post back! It's been up all day and getting very lonely...

Oprah is reading Anna Karenina this summer for Oprah's Book Club. You can go online to www.oprah.com and see the schedule and the questions that she puts up. Since this is the first time taht Oprah is reading it, the questions will only be put up as she finishes the sections. Enjoy! Feel free to pick up a copy and read it with me (and Oprah!). I don't get to watch the shows, either, but am following through the website.

Want to read any other good books this summer? I have a huge stack that I plan to get through, and would love some company. I tend to multitask and read several (like 5-8) books at a time, I just keep one everywhere! In the purse, at teh job, in the bathroom (Oops!), by the bed, etc. I just like too many books to read one at a time, especially with things like Anna Karenina, Harry Potter, and The Stand, where I am sharing them with other people, or the novels that I am reading in Spanish that I can't just sit down and enjoy completely.

Anyway, let me know if you have any ideas or if you want to join me in reading some great books!

Hi Ashley,

Where ar eyou in MN? I am down in SE MN.

Don't have much time to read right now, but I must say I admire you for reading so many books. Most young people these days do not.

herc.

Okay, I'm going to look for your posts on here from now on. I like to read more than one book at a time too. I like to skip from subject to different subject. I haven't read some of the books that you've mentioned. My problem is that I bought two boxes full of books at a used book sale for a dollar a box. A pretty good deal, I must say. I kind of feel obligated to get through these. I've read one that is basically a catalogue of every shark attack ever documented. I know, I have strange interests, lol! I liked it so much I've already read it twice.

Maybe we can all give each other good ideas about what to read next.:sunny:

Herc- I am in Duluth for the summer, then I am moving home to student teach in St. Paul at the end of August. I love reading during the summer because I can enjoy it wherever I am. I like it so much better than watching TV!

Minniepumpernickel- I shop for books at garage sales, too! You get the BEST deals there. I nanny and the kids and I go garage saling every Friday. I buy books that I might not even be interested in to share with people. I never throw books away! I would love to share book ideas. And yes, when I read several at a time, they are all different.

Let's keep this thread going! I love hearing what others are reading!

Hi Ashley, I have read Oprah's books in the past. The Book Of Ruth, House of Sand and Fog, The Deep End of the Ocean, She's Come Undone, one about twin boys into adulthood, the title escapes me, & others that don't readily come to mind .

I haven't been reading as much lately. Been really busy. I miss it! I must say reading your post is inspiring! I'll see if I can get back in the swing of things.

Thanks! :D

P.S.- I do have a book on my stand, "My Mother, My Friend - The ten most important things to talk about with your mother". I think it's going to be great.

Who wrote "My Mother, My Friend?" It sounds like something that would be good for me to read, because my mom and I have been talking more, and maybe it would give me some ideas as to what things I REALLY need to know from/about her.

Join us as we work onand enjoy reading more this summer!

"My Mother, My Friend" is by Mary Marcdante

For mother's day, my mother and I actually went to an afternoon tea and heard Mary Marcdante speak. She is just a very nice down to earth lady. She came to our little table and asked if she could join us prior to speaking. (No one knew she was the author at the time!) She was a delight. She wanted to know all about everyone. :)

She talked about things you should know that will benefit both your mother and yourself, such as your mother's health history and other topics. She shared a personal story about her and her mom that was touching.

There are lighter topics as well. Such as questions in the book to ask your mother like, What do you like about the way you look? What would you change? Favorite perfume? Hairstyle? Beauty tip?

Looks like there are questions for each topic/section and some suggested activities you can do with your mom.

Hope that helped. :)

I also wanted to read one that was on Oprah's list, "White Oleander".

I'm kind of suprised that she is doing Russian literature, but I think that it's really great. I've also read "Nicholas and Alexandra- The Last Imperial Family of Czarist Russia."It's very interesting, not boring like it sounds, lots of scandal and drama!

I found some of Peter and Barbara Jenkins books at the book sale. They write travel journals based on their own experiences of walking across our country, and other countries too. Kind of retro, but cool.

Good luck nannying, sounds like a fun job!:sunny:

I have started White Oleander but never finished it. School got in the way, and I hate taht feeling. Then, I went to pick it up again, and discovered that I had a leaky closet. This is not a goodt hing to discover when trying to pick up a book. It usually means that the book is wet, much like in my case. Anyway, I have it, and it is dry now, and I would love to read it sometime, too. If I get around to it before you do, I will let you know how it is.

Ever since I was a little girl I have had some itnerest in Russian Imperialism. I used to watch Anastasia ALL The time, not the cartoon, the super long one. (4 hours is al ong time for a girl to sit in front of a movie)> So, I think I should learn more about Russian history and maybe get into this Tolstoy and other Russian authors business. I'm always looking for something new.

Nannying can be the best (go to the beach, enjoy the sunshine and outdoors, paid to play) or the worst (keep reading) job, depending on the day. Today was alright, but the boy threw at least one temper tantrum an hour. At ten years old this should be unacceptable, but mom doesn't do anything about it, so I am expected to put up with it. Guess that's why they pay me the big (cough, choke) bucks.

It's fun hearing from everybody on here!
