Anybody do Curves?

I like to use the almighty dollar conscientiously even though most of the time I have no clue what a business owner's politics are. But if I know they are anti-gay or anti-choice, withholding money is one of the few ways I can vote my conscience. And I like to support businesses that support gay rights.

My mother who was severly overweight and was diagnosed with diadetes when she was 61 because of weight started going to Curves here in Montreal two years ago. She is now in better health than she ever was in the last 30 years. She hates going , but keep on doing it because she sees the benefits.

I am the type of person who would not spend money where the Ownwers etc do stuff I dont agree with my vision of justice and human rights and liberties ( wal-mart , home Depot , Mac Donalds etc) I told her about curves since she tends to be like me in those instence. She was a bit taken aback , but decided that , since the program was really well tailord to her needs , she felt comfortable with the crowd there, to keep on going and to accept that she has some contradictions in her life. I for one know that she would never go somewhere else , so for her health , I accept her choice.

I do a lot of shopping without knowing what the directions of these companies do with the money I give them. When I learn , i analyse my level of comfort with the doing and act accordingly. I know that I should drink fare trade coffe , it really fits with my social values , but , for now my wallet wont allow ( but the price of these coffe is comming down. :)

Thanks for all the input. I have HUGE issues with several of the organizations that have been mentioned as being supported by the founder of Curves. I am going to do my own reasearch, and make up my own mind, of course. However, if money from this man (which would be money generated by Curves) is being donated to the organizations I have seen mentioned, then I want no part of that. I can't stand the idea of a single penny of my income going to support those groups. I appreciate the heads up and I'll look into it further.

I agree that Curves workout probably isn't for everyone. But I know plenty of women who have traditional gym memberships who never go. What good is that?

I've done the traditional gym route (family owned) and I prefer Curves because not only do I actually go but I like it there and can be done within 30 minutes which works out well for my life right now. I try my darndest to get there 3X/week and it makes a big difference for my health and overall sense of wellness. If I miss for a while I can feel it. I've seen major transformations there and give those women so much credit. Without Curves they probably would not have become as active.

Choose what is right for your schedule, life and belief system. To each his own. I urge any of you who are considering Curves to give it a try. It can change your life for the better simply by adding some exercise where there previously was little to none. :sunny:

I go to Curves three times a week. It opens at 8:30 am. I drop DD off at school and head over there. I like it because it only takes 30 minutes of my day and yet I think it is a good workout. The ladies that work at my Curves are very friendly and supportive. I've only lost about five pounds, but I've reduced BMI and measurements.

Do you use the Curves at Dr. Phillips?

That's the one that I go to whenever I'm in town!

I'll probably be working out there next Friday afternoon, and Saturday morning.

You DO realize that "personal money"-whatever that means-comes from one's business, don't you? How do you distinguish between someone's "personal money" and the money they earn from their business? Just curious? Do we think people have some private source of funds other than what they do/own for a living?

I'm sure that there are people who work at Disney World and who work at your local grocery store--who might do the same thing.

About as silly as the people who boycott Disney because they host "Gay Days"

(and yes, I know that Disney doesn't host it).

No, I go to the one on CR535 at Summerport. If you are ever interested, it is a straight shot out from WDW (about 10 minutes). Coming out of Disney property, take a left onto CR535 at The Crossroads. Take the first left at the light (by the Shell station). That is CR535. Stay on CR535 until you come to Summerport. It is in the stripmall. It is very nice and never busy.

Each Curves is individually owned. Keep that in mind - don't take it out on the franchisee.

That said, the Curves I go to is open all day M - F and Saturday mornings.

Flower...how about here in Charleston.... where do you go? I'm thinking about joining one in Mt. Pleasant, but just not sure yet. My sister goes and my sister in law manages one. I'm way overweight and just need that push. I think one thing that stops me is that my sister, who is much more overweight than I am, goes regularly for at least 6 months and looks exactly the same. :confused3

I go to the one on Old Trolley Rd. in Summerville- I joined in 2003 and it keeps me motivated to be at least semi-active.

The staff says that 3 times a week is optimal, but I need the routine. I go every day that they're open.

If you're not sure if it's right for you- go in and take a look around! I think that they have a brochure by the desk with a coupon on the back for a week free. That way it's up to you. Go for the week and see how you feel. And remember that it's how YOU feel about it- not what goes on around you.

Good luck- and if you'd like, I'll send you my email addy if you'd like to talk more one-on-one.

Let me know!
