Our trip is coming up and we were wanting to canoe across Loch Ness. How long and how difficult was it? We are not very experienced at canoeing but wanted to try it. Thanks!!!

I've only ever canoed one other time before the Scotland ABD, and that was in 1996. So I'm very unexperienced at canoeing!! And I had a blast! It's a challenge getting the canoe to go in a straight line (you and your partner have to coordinate what you do) but it's not physically hard. And everyone managed. You really just canoe around, it's not like you're trying to get to a specific destination. I *highly* recommend it. ABD is the only company allowed to launch their canoes from Urquhart Castle, so it's a very unique experience.

Enjoy your Scotland ABD!! It's such a fabulous, fabulous trip! And it's so great that you get to do it while the Isle of Lewis is still on the itinerary. :) Be sure & report back!

I believe the canoe activity lasted about an hour and it's fairly easy. However, one gentleman did fall into the water and his camera was ruined. I'm sure it doesn't happen often, but something to keep in mind...

Which is why I brought the waterproof camera! That's always a risk any time you do a water activity. :)

Thanks for the advice. We had planned to bring a waterproof camera. Hope this doesn't happen to us, but best to be prepared.

We canoed on our trip in 2012, and it was one of our favorite activities. My husband was with our special needs teen son who'd never canoed before, and I was with our tween daughter who also had never canoed before with no problems. I'm not sure my husband had, but the last time I'd canoed was at camp when I was about 13 :) Took us a few minutes to get the hang of it, and we were paddling around like pros, LOL. We did have someone go over in our trip (maybe the same person mentioned above), but it wasn't their fault. It was due to the wake of a boat and the jerk captain who purposefully did not give way to the smaller vessel as you are supposed to. The canoe guides were furious and you can bet that boat captain was talked to.

The wind made our canoeing difficult and one canoe needed a guide to get in and help them. If you're not confident you can always ask to go in the guides boat. The guides also have waterproof bags for your stuff I let Disney take the photos and left my camera on dry land.
