Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here is a vet., or even anyone who knows a lot about animals (specifically cats), that could help me with a few questions.
Thanks!

Well, we had a stray cat that we kind of adopted as an outdoor cat, not knowing she was pregnant. Two weeks ago she gave birth to six kittens (four gray and two white). She is very young, so I think it is her first. It has been a tough litter....when they were a week and a half, we woke up to find the two white ones gone (searched for them for two days, and no sign of them), and one of the gray boys were very sick; he died a few hours later. Then, the next day, the same thing happened to the other gray boy. Now, we have two gray girls left that seem to be healthy. The mom seems to be doing a good job of taking care of these two. We now need to get the mom cat spayed as soon as possible, but we want to make sure the two kittens are taken care of. I need to know when is the earliest I can get her fixed, and will she be able to get pregnant again in the meantime (the boy cat comes around everyday, and we cannot catch him). Also, we have never had newborn kittens before, and are not sure how to care for them past what their mother can do. How do we wean them, what do we feed them after they stop nursing, etc.
Sorry this is such a long post! But any advice anyone can give would be GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks for listening!

Not a vet but unexpectedly had kittens last year (okay the cat did, not me)! You cannot fix the mother cat until after the kittens are done being weaned. The best way to help the mother is to keep putting out food and water for her. We just started putting extra out around 4 weeks of age in a low pan. This way when the kittens wanted to try it they could. And yes, we switched it to kitten food for both the mom and kittens.

If a male cat comes around prior to the mom getting fixed, well to put it delicately, the vet can take care of that when he spays her.

My DH brought home a kitten from a scrap yard that barely fit into his hand. I hadn't had kittens in so long that I forgot that little boy kitties aren't born with their privates showing. Oops!! Didn't take long for the sucker to impregnant our indoor female cat. He was fixed soon after that!

When you go get mom checked for FELV/FIV that might explain why the kittens died.

If she was nervous or upset she may have cannabalized them as well. It often happens with first time mama's in several species.
