I got stopped every day last trip until a security officer finally told me that my sunglass case has a little metal in the hinges, so now I carry a cloth one!

It's actually the metal that reinforces the shell of the case, not the hinges. (Not that it matters, its annoying either way and I'm glad you've found an alternative.)
