Anyone have any tips on how to secure a good viewing spot without having to "stake-out" a spot for hours? Maybe a little-known area that others don't flock to? I heard of a spot at one of the "countries" that they rope off just before Illuminations where no one is standing in front of you, but I don't remember which country it was?! Any help would be appreciated. I'm only going to have 4 hours to spend in EPCOT and I don't want to spend a lot of time standing and holding a spot for Illuminations.

It really depends on the time of year you go. If you're there Christmas week, you'll probably have to stake a spot a couple of hours ahead. Most of the year, you can take a seat on a bench probably 30-45 minutes early or just walk up and stand behind some folks sitting down up to a few minutes before it starts. You can see Illuminations from anywhere around the lagoon so anywhere is good. The best views are probably from the bridge between the UK and France (go out onto the "island" viewing area if it's not blocked off for a private event) - no seating but great views.

There really is no magic spot, the absolute minimum time is half an hour, and that's taking a very, VERY big chance that no one else makes it there before you . . . every time I've tried to cut it close on "hidden gems for Illuminations seating" I've lost out. If you don't want to spend time on the stakeout, your best bet would be to try to get an ADR at one of the restaurants that has decent seating for Illuminations, or meander around the back part of the WS while its going on (actually not a bad plan, I've done it, you sure don't have to be stationary to enjoy something that's happening all around you!).

During one of our January trips, I noticed a CM standing by the patio area of the UK pavilion, a guest was talking to her and gave her his name. After he was done, I asked if she was talking names for Illuminations? She was and we were able to give our names and came back 15 minutes before the show to stand off to the side of people eating dinner on the patio! It was a pretty good spot, especially for not having to wait for it!

I would recommend an Illuminations cruise! They're wonderful! :goodvibes

What time was it when you were gave her your name?

We normally stand on the steps in Canada but this year everyone wanted a new view so we decided to try a small patio area infront of Germany, near Italy. We arrived one hour before and found two other couples already there. We struck up a conversation with them and the couple on the point assured us this was a great place to view the whole thing. So we took a seat on the pavement and just sat around talking.

We had one member. "J" who had never seen Illuminations and we were excited to share with him. All was well until about 30 seconds before it all started and a man with a video camera rapidly pushed past all of us and jumped up on the pillar that was part of the wall. He placed himself right in front of "J". It happened all so quick and right as the show started that it left us all speechless!

I finally reached the man's arm and said, " Oh no no! You can not sit there! We have been holding thses places for an hour. You need to get down!"

He very rudely told me not to touch him. I had already let go of his arm. I again repeated that he needed to get down and several others around us stated that you are not permitted to sit up there. He ignored everyone and just kept filming. I was ticked off and missing the start of the show. The couple on the point moved over a bit so "J" could see a bit of the show. It was still very distracting and irritating. The man pretended that he could not understand English.

After about 5 minutes a CM dressed in the costume from Italy stepped up to the man and told him he had to get down and explained that it was dangerous for him to sit there like that. I told the CM that he had pushed his way in front of us and that we had asked him to get down and he just ignored us. The CM asked again and the man said in Spanish that he would get down in one hour! I translated for the CM and then the CM got angry and told the man very firmly that he had to get down and get down now!

Again we were just not thinking and when the man finally got down he stood right in front of all of us with his arms way out to his side and basically blocking the view for as many of us as he could. I turned to the CM to get him to make the man move and the CM shrugged and walked away.

Now I was really ticked and I told the man in a very loud voice that I did not think he was a very nice person! I did not swear or anything like that I just used those words. By this time the show is nearly over and the fireworks are in the air a bit more so we just watched what we could of the show. At one point the man turned to our DD and said the "F' you words to her right in the face. Then he started pushing into the back of the woman half of the couple on the point. Then he got on his phone and called someone and then started raising his hands and jumping all over the place. A minute or two later a man starts pushing in my DH who was behind me at this point. Then the man in the front yells to this guy for him to start getting into our backpacks and take our wallets. I had enough Spanish in HS and college to understand the man. I told my husband to move his wallet and keep our back pack in front of him that they were trying to steal things out of it!

It was just plain ridiculous and we were tried of the whole thing. With that the show ended and we quickly moved away from them both. Everyone around us was shocked and upset with the whole thing too. We tried to not let it ruin the entire show for us but it was certainly uncalled for and we really did nto know what else to do. We could see no security near us to help and when the CM did show he only got the guy off the wall but did nothing to help us.

Has anyone had anything like this happen to them? We have seen the show several times although we usually have someone with us who has never seen it and we have never had any problems. Once in a while you get a family with a young child and they politely ask if the child can move to the front and see the show. Normally they are lower than any of us so they do not block our view and it is not a problem at all.

Does security have the power to move someone who pushes in like this? Someone else said we should have let them take something from us and then gotten security but we just did not want the hassle of all of that! :confused3

Next time we will go to our better spot in Canada! :teeth:

Unfortunetly - I cant tell you "my spot". It's picture perfect - I can show up minutes before show time - be guaranteed no one in front of me AND be able to sit down in a chair the whole time.

Im so sorry - Im taking this one to the grave. :rolleyes1

Thank you SO much, now instead of "enjoying" the park in October, I will be "searching" for your PERFECT spot!!! HMMMMMMMM!!! How about a game of "hot/cold"!!! :rotfl2:

and why exactly do you find it necessary to tell us WHAT language this man spoke? Are you racist?

:rotfl2: You have to be kidding? :lmao:

I simply mentioned that he was speaking Spanish and that I had taken enough Spanish in school that I was able to understand him. If he had been speaking say Chinese, then I would not have understood him. This man understood English just fine as he knew what the CM was asking him to do enough to answer appropriately. What difference does it make as to what language he spoke? None other than he understood me and the CM and I understood him. If he truely could not understand English then it might explain the way he was breaking the rules since he would not have understood them when they were announced before the show started but he was looking for a fight plain and simple and it was disgusting to see that kind of behavior in any human being especially in Disney!

If you are looking for an arguement then you need to look elsewhere as you will not get one from me! :rotfl2:

I think that the poster was trying to illustrate the point that the person first spoke good English, and then when they had someone try to reprimand them, that they all of a sudden were speaking in Spanish to act like they did not understand. They never said that this person was of a certain skin color or was from a certain country. I'm sure that there are plenty of caucasian people that live in Spanish speaking countries who mainly speak Spanish. I just didn't feel that this was a racist comment. :confused3

Hot & Cold, aye??? ..... nahhhh! I like my spot too much to be willing to risk it. :teeth:

Rest assured, especially in October - youll be able to see Illuminations from just about anywhere in World Showcase.

My *spot* has taken years of experience and trips to perfect. I just cant do it... :rotfl:

That is just so out of line.
I am Hispanic & I did not in any way, shape or form find what Twende posted racist.

I will say the CM should have contacted Disney security. When that CM didn't I would have gladly skipped the fireworks to go find a CM that would do so. Swearing, standing in a prohibited area & shoving are not needed anywhere, let alone Disney.

I am so sorry you & all the others had such an upsetting & disturbing experience- :grouphug:

Back to topic: I have seen the lower point in front of France, to the right of the UK/France bridge, as you look out onto Illuminations, roped off & no one at all allowed to stand there, why would that be? It was puzzling & we saw it twice last Dec (1st week of).

Twende~

What an awful experience it seems you've had. While nothing we've experienced quite measures up to that, it does seem to be our luck that EVERY time...parade, fireworks, show, etc...we always tend to have one person or one group that shows up last minutes and tries to get in front of us after we've waited. (I'm not talking about someone trying to let their child see, I mean adults or whole families.) I suppose I'm just rude and big mouthed enough that they always move...plus my DH is a towering 6'5" big guy...kind of physically intimidated I guess. I wouldn't try to steal HIS wallet in any case. ;)

Between France and Morocco, there is a small semi-circular path that separates from the main walk (toward the lagoon) (you can see it on the map: http://www.wdwinfo.com/maps/epcot.htm). We watched Illuminations from there on a Tuesday night earlier this month. We arrived only 15-20 minutes ahead of time and had nobody in front of us. It was nice, because you could sit on the ground and lean against the railing while you were waiting.

"I'm hispanic"

The fact that you self identify as "hispanic" says a lot about you. NO wonder you weren't offended. I am LATINA, my family is LATINO and we will never be "hispanic", and I did find the post extremely offensive. In fact, I reported it.

"what does it matter what language he was speaking?"

EXACTLY MY POINT

...and it looks like I DID get an argument from you, an entire paragraph of it. I think saying he "acted like he didn't speak English" would have been more than plenty to say. Instead you've pulled out a whole culture and cast them in a bad light. Again, who the heck gives a crap what language he spoke???? YOU seem to.
