I am looking for a side job to make some more money but when I look am finding different barriers.

I live right outside of Southwest Philadelphia and work a 8-4:30 job at a claims department at an insurance company in Center City. I recently graduated with an MBA and am especially skilled at writing, especially research and technical writing. I do not have a car, in part to save money, otherwise I could make money doing Uber/Lyft.

Anyone have any ideas, such as an online tutoring or proofreading services? There are some fast food and restaurant places I have tried however the hours I need to work don't match my current job.

When I needed more money for my wedding, I got a job tutoring high school students for college entrance exams. For the company that I worked with, they paid $20/hour, but I had to travel to the students' home. There are other companies that offer the same types of tutoring services online or at a central office location which might work for you, not having a car. It was pretty easy work and I actually enjoyed helping the students improve their scores.

Bartender and waitress come to mind, just because that sure seems what everyone I know looking for a side gig ends up doing. Working at brew houses is especially hot. Some of these folks claim they can make $50 to $60 an hour in tips on Friday and Saturday nights, more that their "real" job pays.

If you can snag those hot hours when that is true, I'm sure the tips are great. You also need to physically keep up the pace that is required. I did it when I was much younger and stronger and made more in two weekend nights than a conventional job at the time was paying. It worked for a short time.

Move to Seattle. I can't hire people fast enough for our group. We pay around $100k per year and I have 11 openings in our 25 people group. I can't compete with other employers that are willing to pay more for civil engineers. I'll make 5 or 6 offers before I get one person to accept.

Amazon has 9,000 open positions in the city right now. They are desperate to hire people.

My sister just got a promotion at Amazon and moved out to Seattle. I guess they now have 8999 open positions.

I have this same issue! Congrats on the MBA, haven't yet figured out the best graduate option that I can make work financially and with work. I have a car, but not nice enough for uber/lyft and my hours are longer than yours. It is reaaaaallly difficult to find a job that will take non-flexible employees. I would love a side job like you describe!

Does anyone have any tips on legitimate work from home part-time jobs? My wife and I have talked about picking one up, but want something legit.

If you're into softball become an umpire. Numerous rec and league softball fields need umpires. Go to your local fields and inquire.

I have heard several people say how much they love vipkid. It's teaching English to foreigners online. You can do it from home, the hours are flexible, and I think the only main requirement they have is having a degree. I think it pays very well for a side gig too.

Thanks! I believe I'll look into it!

I looked into as well. The hours are just horrible for me, starts at four a.m. for my time zone. I wish I could make it work though, I've heard very good things.

If you are looking to tutor, there is a franchise called Mathnasium you could check into.

This may not work for you, but I am throwing it out there for others as well. I started babysitting part time. I went through care.com. Now I get up every morning and babysit 6-8 AM and make $20/hr An extra $200/week is great!!!! I do evenings occasionally as well which is even more *extra money*

This may be outside of the box, but if you write well, have you considered doing part time work for a non-profit as a grant writer? I have worked in professional theatre my entire life and I have worked with many independent grant writers who are employed by the theatre to write a specific grant request and then they move on. Being around the Philly area, there are probably plenty to choose from.

There was a thread here earlier this year about how much to pay adult babysitters. I got flamed for suggesting it should be at least minimum wage. More than one person said that was way too much money. So hats off to you for getting $20 an hour.

Really? Maybe it depends on where you live or something. I'm in the greater Boston area and even the kids get $10+ per hour. Part time care is very tough to find here and caregivers are at a premium. I have an exceptionally good situation with a single dad who makes a very very good living and pays me 52 weeks a year, even if he or I take a week off, on snow days and school breaks (I still do most summer weeks and drop him off at camp) and all holidays. I'm incredibly grateful and feel so blessed to have found such a good situation. It's made a huge difference for me and I'm done so early every day I just get on with my day. Sorry you got flamed. People can be ridiculous. ❤️
