I guess I am a mean mom but I wouldn't put up with the behavior. If he is scared of taking shoes off, then don't put shoes on him. If he says he is going to have a temper tantrum then give 2 options if you have 2 options-either go thru security like all the other kids or stay home (if that is an option.)
But, this is coming from the mom who had convinced her middle school son that he could be picked randomly for a strip search. The look on his face.Good times.......
I am mean like that too

My child, now 16, has been patted down several times.
DS11 has been patted down a number of times as well (including many times internationally, which makes a US pat down just seem pointless by comparison
). I do't fuss about it so he doesn't fuss about it. It is what happens at airports to everyone--eye rolling and rolling with the punches is a good way to handle it--your DD is pretty smart
So I just dropped it. We'll go, and when it comes to security, I'm sure there is going to be a line of other kids of all ages going and she'll see how they all do it with no issues so she probably will too..she's a follower in that sense...and when it's her turn, I will make sure I go first as she's more clingy with me that DH. Worse case, they'll let me carry her I'm sure if she throws a fit but she's not one to make a fuss in public, especially if other kids are doing it, she'll want to be a big girl too....I HOPE!!! They always do the opposite you expect them to...I worry more about her reaction when the plane leaves the ground!
I hate that part too...
