Hi,
We are a Family of three me44 DS22, DS14. Will be on the Magic 7 day cruise For my 45th B-day. What would be something good to do while at port in Grand Caymen.
Arrive at 7Am Depart 5:30PM.
Also any maps or web sites to visit? I did a search but only one thread?

Thank you in advance, Mamo

Grand Cayman Excursions

I found this site helpful for finding "do it yourself" excursions outside of Disney.

We did Horseback Riding with Nicki (which is no longer listed with this company, but Nicki still does horseback riding on the island--her email is nikiride@candw.ky

Snorkeling is also great here (or diving if you are certified--this is some of the best diving in the world.)

Captian Marvins is what we have chosen. We will be with them for the day. We will snorkel at two different stops and swim with the Sting Rays.

We have done this very same trip. VERY FUN and the snorkeling is AWESOME!

I'd definitely do Stringray City, it was the most amazing experience. They are so gentle (the stingrays), kind of a really big house cat. And if you can get a tour that adds in snorkeling that would be even better.
If you decide to go on your own, skip Eden rock. It's real close to the tender pier, but the coral is dead and there aren't many fish now. Unless you count the barracuda we saw. :earseek:

We did Captain Marvin's early morning excursion and returned to the ship for lunch. We then spent the afternoon at 7 mile beach.

Grand Cayman is a great island and my favorite stop on the Western cruise.

Haven't been to Grand Cayman yet, but are cruising in 4 wks. :D

Did some research on the various cruise boards and decided to venture out on our own in Grand Cayman. We are doing our excursion thru 'Native Way Watersports'. First, swimming with the rays at Stingray City, then snorkeling at Coral Gardens for a reasonable $30.pp. Can't wait!!

PS -
If you do a search on the cruise trip reports board at bottom of page, you'll get some great ideas for Western.

Have a wonderful adventure!

We didn't plan any excursion in grand cayman..since it is a short day.

We took the first tender off the boat..grabbed a taxi driver doing tours..there were 10/12 of us in the van...and took the two hour tour of the island.

It was excellent...they take you past the first gingerbread house..let you out at the turtle farm and hell, through some of the neighborhoods, and many other sites. Well worth it.

After that..we wanted to have lunch in one of the local restaurants...and try some of the local beers/micro brew pubs.

We walked ocean side, a little ways down from the dock and stopped at Rackhams first...they serve stingray beer. They also have the best souvenier shop we found. The bar overlooks the ocean and they have a full menu...we opted to eat at the next place. Big Bamboo...they have a limited menu..grilling fresh fish and such for you on the deck. They have 5 micro brews to try..all wonderful. Next time, we will eat at Rackhams..the food looked and smelled delicious. Everyone seemed to be enjoying it.

The food at big bamboo was wonderful also..don't get me wrong.
Just a lighter menu.

We did some other shopping, went to hard rock cafe and it was time to head back to the ship. Lots of fun!

Enjoy!

We did the stingray city-snorkel trip through Red Sail Sports. It was fantastic! It leaves from a dock at the Hyatt and includes a buffet lunch on board. ( I believe that only the morning trip includes lunch.) They use a beautiful catamaran and take you to the deeper stingray site - about 12 feet of water. I prefer this to the other stingray site where you stand in three or four feet of water. I like to actually swim with the rays! I think Red Sail Sports has a web site. And the reef we snorkeled was pretty good also.

BIG DITTO about Nicki!~ she's wonderful, the ride is great and her horses are well-trained and gentle! We are horse owners and are quite critical of how horses look and behave, no complaints at all about Nicki's!!!

Just imagine riding along a beach and you can not find any closer moment of happiness/peace in your lives. At least that's what it was like for us (DS-8 and me -48).

There is also a Botanical Garden on grand Cayman. I believe it is called Queen Victoria Botanical Garden. It is a great place to visit if you are into gardens. It is about halfway accross the island on the main road that cuts accross the island.

Thank you for all the great posts. My DS22 would love to ride horses on the beach"TooCool" direct quote. and the Queen Victoria Botanical Garden will be perfect for me. DS14 will love 'Native Way Watersports'. First, swimming with the rays at Stingray City, then snorkeling at Coral Gardens for a reasonable $30.pp.
Micro brewery hummmm I hadn't tought about that. Maybe DS22 would enjoy that one.
I also saw on the web site Grand Cayman Excursions
where they teach you to scuba dive and then take you to scuba with sting rays,I think. Has anyone done this? Its $150 expensive but it sounds like fun.
I think I will need extra days at Grand Cayman!!!!!
:jumping1: :jumping1: :jumping1:

I agree with the extra days in Grand ayman. My Dha nd I spent a week there and it was one of the best vacations...the island is beautiful! It does get a little expensive there though.

Stingray Beer is really good!! so are conch fritters and fried plantains and any kind of grilled fish and...hhmmmm food....

Also, there is a woman who has a photography studio not far from Georgetown. She takes the most amazing underwater pictures. Her name is Cathy Church and I believe her website is www.cathychurch.com. We bought 3 pictures of hers when we were down there.....great colorful fish and coral.

I want to go back!!

Have a great day!

denise5374 I went to the web site WOW!

What hotel did you stay at? I think my boys would love a week in Grand cayman with a day at Cathy's WOW again.
That site is awsome!
I picked the Western Cruise because I knew we would like the Ports of Call, but I had no idea how much there is to do at each port.
On our last vacation (at Pamana City, FL) my DS14 (5 at the time) came home and decorated his room like the beach. My DS 22(13 at the time) is an artist and he drew the beach scene on the wall and they painted it and used beach chairs and beach pastel and bright colors. I just wonder what they will do this time. I know I will be bringing home some of Cathy's photos for the Den,Mamo

We stayed at a hotel on the opposite end of the island as Georgeown. I t is called the Morrtis Tortuga Club and I think they have another one there too. They are vacation rentals, my parents had a time share (at that time) so that is how we got there. I found out later that Cayman is really $$. The airfare from Philadelphia to GC was something like $700 each. Food and alcohol on the island are very expensive. When we were there the Dollar was $1.25 Cayman so everything seemed 25% more, that coupled with the fact that they have to import everything makes things expensive. As the vacation wore on it ecame sort of a joke, I think at the end we spent almost $2000 not counting the hotel or the airfare. We also didn't buy alot of souvenirs other than the Cathy Church pictures.

A quick funny story, we went to the grocery store to get some things for lunch and breakfast, we bought one loaf of bread, one pack of Oscar Mayer bologna, one pack of Kraft chhese singles, one box of cereal, and one gallon of milk and the bill was over $30.00(cayman dollars) I think th milk was like $6 CD. It was definitely sticker shock!

Also, it is really hot there in the summer, we went in AUgust and everday is was in the 90s with 85% humidity, however I would go back in a heartbeat, althoughh I would definitely consider an all-inclusive this time!!

One other thing about Cathy Church, she is originall y from Altoona, PA, which is near where my DH grew up. Small world!!

If you need any mor information, PM me and I will tell you what we did. It truly is a fabulous place!!!!

denise5374 please check you PM.Thank You!!!!!!,mamo:hyper:
