Any strategy to timing / negotiating promotions on direct DVC purchase?

When buying direct, is there any strategy around maximizing the promotions / incentives? Are there certain times of years, or certain economic conditions, where Disney has consistently offered higher incentives? Does anyone have experiences negotiating an incentive better than what is offered on the website?

Depends on what properties you are considering. Because they were closed for COVID for so long the incentives overall are better than they have been for a while - especially if you are buying larger contract.
If you see yourself reselling them someday, you might want to avoid Riviera due to their resale restrictions.
Here's a good current thread about where direct sales are right now:

One person did mention wanting until the last day the current offer was valid to purchase, and then rescinding and re-purchasing if a better offer came out immediately afterward. I’ve also seen some strategy about getting the previous year’s points included, but I can’t remember how the timing on that is supposed to work.

You can get prior year points depending on the use year. We purchased in March 2013 and were given an April UY. We were immediately given our initial allotment of points and then given the next years a couple of days later. In hindsight, I am not sure how that worked considering the banking rules. Our salesperson used that as an additional incentive to purchase.

This. Incentives right now are both good by recent standards and being offered on sold out properties which hasn’t happened in years. So while they might be better some day know that they are pretty good now

You just need to buy a UY month that hasn't occurred yet in the calendar year. Like buy Aug in July. Buy Dec in Nov. Buy Feb in Jan.

Thanks for the tips - executed on this strategy and we are now the proud owners of 200 points at RIV! (UY Sep for the extra 200)
