Looking around and wondering what states have new build communities for 55 plus in good communities?

Many states have 55+ communities. Depends on:
  • what part of the country you want to live in
  • what your housing budget is
  • what general cost of living you're looking for (for example, living in CA will be a lot more expensive than in other states)
  • would you prefer states without state income tax
  • do you have any needs/preferences for being close to a lot of healthcare options/major hospital systems
  • do you want to be close-ish to a major airport (i.e., like an hour's drive or whatever)
  • if you have children, do you want to be within ___ travel distance from them
  • etc

Several couples who live in my current community in Northern VA are moving to a new 55+ place in Lancaster, PA. Some houses are built, some are still under construction. Don't know the name. having moved here from PA, I know PA has more favorable tax rules for retirees with pensions.

So the ancient 55 community in Yuma foothills has a brand new hospital... brand new geriatric medical center...3 grocery stores...one a super Kroger and new sprouts..3 places to buy fresh doughnuts minutes apart... and beyond the ancient 55 community there are expensive estates out of reach of families so isolated living is possible in a winter visitor environment

Even if there are only old 55 and up communities near you, there are always lots of homes available. There is a lot of turnover as the residents tend to be of dying age.

Florida. I am surrounded by some new 55+ communities. Of note is that a small percentage of occupants/owners can be under 55. Last time I heard, I think it hovered around 5%.

My street is all over 55s, not an official 55 plus community, and it soooo boring! We always thought we would retire in one, but now not so much. I look forward to chatting with my younger neighbors more so. My son's neighborhood is all mixed ages and so much fun!

We have one only here. Big homes/two floors. Wish they would build some. No two floors, choice of 2 or 3 bedrooms and smaller homes (1,000 to 1,500 square feet - not all but have a choice). NJ has plenty. Not moving to NJ - closest to me.

Some of our friends parents live at "The Villages" in Florida. We visited them when we went on vacation a few years ago. It seems like The Villages is its own world. It was very cool, so much stuff going on. From what I understand, it is growing.

I've heard a lot of....interesting things about The Villages.

Where I live, I think most of the 55+ communities are more like condos. Maybe a couple neighborhoods here and there but not sure. I don't think we'd be eligible to live in one until our son is 55......so....I'd be 87.

In NJ where I was born and raised, there are many and most of them are in Southern Jersey. My MIL has been living in one for over 25 years. Every time we visit, there is a new community going up. Didn't know of any in my area of California. Now in GA (outside ATL) suburbs, there are very few. A couple of years ago I remember seeing some signs and they were starting at $400k. About an hour from here there were some built, they were very much on the luxury side of things. Started at $500k and easily into the $700's.

I just know there seemed to be a lot of Trumpers at one point. But I suppose that's fairly common with the older generation, in general.
Oh yes, it's a very red community. I thought you were talking about the STD "scandal" lol! Many years ago, something came out in the media that The Villages had a very high STD rate. It was proven to be false at some point but people remember the exaggeration.
