Any sea sickness on Amalfi coast tour?

We are planning to take Amalfi Coast/Florence tour summer 2018. My son-in-law has some issues with motion sickness/sea sickness. For anyone who has been on this tour, do you think we should reconsider or could accomodations be made if he needs to opt out of the boat ride? I'm thinking the ferry boat to Capri might be less of an issue. TIA for any insight.

I have issues with sea-sickness, and I didn't have any problems with the boat ride around Capri. And we had high winds and some rough seas that day. I'm *sure* they would work something out if he absolutely couldn't make the boat ride. It takes off & returns to the same spot, so it isn't like the ferry boat, which leaves from Sorrento, and returns to Naples.

Thank you so much for your quick response. Am I right in my assumption that the ferry boat ride is less challenging for someone the sea-sickness?

I don't remember having any issues with the ferry boats to/from Capri. I'm sure I'd remember if there were issues (like the ferry to Crete in Greece!).

I think it depends on conditions because DD17 (younger at the time) definitely had sea sickness issues on the boat ride to Capri on our DCL Med cruise in 2011. She is extremely susceptible to sea sickness though--even now. She felt a little sick on the ferry to Crete in Greece, but our crossing was really flat. The worst was the Turkish Schooner port adventure that we did on the same DCL cruise. She and most of the rest of the group were tossing their cookies most of the 2 hour journey back. Not fun! I'm not sure about accommodations that could be made, but I'd maybe have him take something or get an ear patch from a doctor before the trip? Capri is not to be missed! Despite her sea sickness, I think she would still put it as one of the high points of the trip (the schooner not so much, LOL).

Thank you CaliforniaGirl09 and Sayhello for your insights. I think we will book it and try to find something he can take for the water excursions. :boat:

We did Amalfi Coast in July 2016. Great trip. The boat ride along the Amalfi Coast was very easy and no one had any issues with sea sickness. Grab a seat on top and enjoy the views. The ride to Capri was a little more rough and the seats were inside the cabin. On both boat rides the guides were handing out ginger gum to help combat any sea sickness issues. Ginger has been shown to ease/prevent sea sickness. The boat ride around capri was not a problem and everyone was excited to be enjoying the views and the swim in the Med.

Thank you DD's Prince. My son-in-law is now rethinking whether he wants to make this trip. But the good news is my DD27 may join us anyway. :)

Tell him to go anyways!! I was totally nauseous (as was pretty much everyone else) on the ferry ride from Santorini to Crete on the Greece ABD. But it still remains my favorite of my 9 ABD's!! It's totally worth it!

We're still trying to convince him. We are going to book it this weekend so he has a few days. He has some work and volunteer commitments that are driving his decision too so we understand. We are really hoping our daughter will come even if he doesn't though. They went with us last summer on the Cities of Knights and Lights ABD and loved it. She (and he) were unable to join us when we did the Viva Italia ABD a few years ago and I know she would fall in love with Italy just like we did.

I have motion sickness issues and have since I was an infant. I would not miss the Amalfi or miss seeing Capri because of it. I would tell him to use any normal medication he uses for the condition, for example, I am loyal to Bonine. Then, I need to manage my triggers. For example, if I am overheated or in direct sunlight, I'm done. So, I would make sure I take my pill well ahead of the trip and then try to find a shady cool place to sit.

Motion sickness is uncomfortable and annoying. However, usually it passes once you are on solid ground or stop moving (cars and buses are still issues for me). Even if I get sick, I start to feel better relatively quickly.
