Lucky me, I get to go to a conference in San Francisco October 18-25. There is some free time built into that time frame and as a first time visitor to the SF area, I'm looking for some advice on what to do. Also, if anyone has any hints on what to pack weather wise, I would appreciate it.

Deno, where will you be staying? I'm sure the Northern California folks can give you some good ideas. San Francisco is a BEAUTIFUL city and it's a wonderful place to visit, lucky you. :)

As for what to pack, it's COOL in SF in October, pack warm clothes. It may be in the 60s during the day but it will cool down at night.

We're flying in around the 12th Oct for a wedding-I just plan on being ready for cool and wet weather.

SFMoMA is always on my list...most of the time I scour neighborhoods for books/restaurants, so many good ones you really can't go wrong...(Castro, Mission)

But for a first visit-w/o really knowing what you're into-maybe the Exploratorium and Golden Gate Park? Check out Chinatown(I'm not into most Chinatowns but this one is a pretty good one), boat rides at Pier 39, Haight Street, Sharon Meadow (aka hippie hill)...

If you MUST-I suppose a trolley-or wait, they might not like you calling it that-or was it 'streetcar' that they don't like...

enjoy, it's a nice, mellow town!

ohyeah-Disney fans, of course-don't forget the original Ghirardelli's at Ghirardelli Square!

"WokWizard" walking tours of Chinatown.
"Three Babes and a Bus" SOMA nightclub/dance tour.
Coit Tower at Sunset
Alcatraz tour
good walking shoes, stretch your calf muscles
drink wine
there's SO much more...extend your stay for a couple of days

I am in NO WAY an expert on San Francisco. However, I live in the southern regions of the South Bay.

San Francisco is beautiful. The touristy stuff is fun. Check out Red and White ferries to tour Alcatraz.. amazing stuff... Blue and Gold ferries do a great Bay tour.
Pier 39 and Fishermans Wharf.. lots of Yummy stuff to temp your taste buds.. along with Ghiradelli Square. Gotta Have's: Clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl.. Boudin's is great. A big hunk of Ghiradelli chocolate., A margarita at sunset at one of the many out door grills overlooking the stunning Golden Gate Bridge, fresh crab from one of the stalls at Fishermans Wharf and a really good glass of Napa Valley wine.

San Francisco can be cold and gray.. depending on the wind.. but can be sunny and cool too. Hot.. is not commonly used in the weather forecast..
The sun usually pokes out mid-morning after the cloud cover burns off. Evenings are very cool. Sweater and jacket are a must for evening. Jeans are appropriate.. but it has it's Upscale places which require more dressy attire. Pack good walking shoes.. a must..
Of course ride the trolley!! Venture into North Beach for Italian food, Chinatown for some wild history and funky imports.
There are great dance clubs, comedy clubs, and theaters. The art galleries and street artists are cool. Sunday afternoons can be divided btwn 49er and Raider Football fans.. hec maybe the Giants or A's will make it to the World Series

Have a great time on your trip. Make it worth your while.. have a wonderful adventure!

Thanks for all of the imput - the wealth of knowledge on the DIS Boards continue to amaze me!
