DH and I may look to buy our first fridge at the first of the year, or sooner if a good offer comes by. We want a great brand that will last many years, at an affordable price, of course =)

What brand do you recommend?

I bought a used Kenmore in 1992. I paid $150 for it. We still have it and it still works great. Never a problem.

It really depends more on the style. According to the research I did for our new refrigerator, a top/bottom style is more reliable (and energy efficient) than the side by sides. We still went with a side by side - bought a Kenmore, #1 rating according to Consumer Reports. We have a short opening so it was a challenge finding a refrigerator to even fit!

Good luck!

We went from a freezer on top to a side by side
HATE IT
So hard to find anything.
Our next one will be a bottom freezer model

Don't get a side by side.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I odn't care how many more cubic feet it has than your old one, the stuff doesn't fit into it right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have a side by side and I HATE it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My next fridge will be a refrigerator on top/freezer on bottom model.

I have an "old fashioned" or "upside down" fridge (depending on how old you are!)

The fridge is on the top and I LOVE IT!!! There is so much room and everything fits.

However, you really need to have a deep freezer, because the freezer is really small!

I think it's a Kenmore, but I'm too lazy to run upstairs and look!:D

Love our Kenmore, side by side. We have the fingerprint proof brushed stainless steel and it actually works, no prints at all and we have 2 kids. It's almost a year old and still looks brand new.

First Amana side-by-side lasted about 25 or so years, second one, almost identical, just more energy efficient, plus the water and ice thing, about 8 years now. No problems with either, other than first dying after a troublefree expected life.

Based on our fridge experience (it's two years old)

love stainless steel - even with kids
love Kenmore - no service problems
love water and ice in the door - didn't think we really needed
it but DH won that argument and now I'm glad he did

hate, hate, hate the side-by-side - never can find anything,
not enough room for tall bottles, not enough room in the
freezer for anything bigger than a box of frozen veggies!

thanks for your thoughts so far!

bumping for weekday crowds - it got buried!

We just bought a Kenmore, stainless, freezer on the bottom. We really like it, alhtough I haven't filled the freezer yet. The fridge has water on the inside and the freezer makes ice. I think the newer model has ice and water through the door.

Here's another person who HATES the side by side. Ours has roll out shelves, pull-out baskets, etc. -- all the fancy stuff -- but you still can't find anything. It's a Whirlpool and works fine, though.

While I'm complaining, I also would not get a crushed ice dispenser again b/c some of the ice always goes somewhere other than the cup. There are little bits of ice on the floor, then people walk through them and before long, it's a dirty mess. As I recall, we paid about $100 extra to get crushed ice as well as cubes and water.

We had a Kenmore that came with DH's first house that went about 20 years.

We just purchased a Maytag at Home Depot in July. It's a bottom mount freezer with an ice maker and water just inside the refrigerator door. I love this frig. I has so much room, french door opening (you can open one or the other, or both). A drawer at the bottom of the frig that holds an entire deli tray. The freezer is very roomy with two baskets and an ice maker. We had trouble with the ice maker initially, but it was replaced and works great. It's the roomiest frig and freezer I've ever had. Had a Kenmore side-by-side before this, and this one is hands down a better frig.

We have a Kenmore with the freezer on top. i like it a lot, but wish I got one a little bit bigger. Fortunately, we have an old Kenmore in the cellar (beer fridge)

We just bought a Frigidaire side-by-side(black) earlier this year. It's working fine, and as far as finding anything in it, there are only two of us here so it's not jam packed with stuff.

I am a little disappointed with the crushed ice in the door. Same problem as an earlier poster said: a little bit of ice always seems to get away from you and winds up on the floor. You can avoid the problem if you are really careful and take your time getting ice, but I wanted crushed ice fast.:)
