Any redheads here going to WDW?

Evidently, they also react differently to pain meds and to anesthesia.

If you still have a link, I would love to read that. Stuff like that interests me. Thanks in advance.

The only thing I have seen scientifically is a higher sensitivity and threshold for pain (nothing major though) and an increased resistance to anesthetics (I can attest to this one. Makes dental visits a nightmare). NIH has some studies on their site.

Yes, my dentist had a tough time getting me numb enough when I had a cavity. He told me he expected it with my red hair. It was horrible, I still felt some sensation even with laughing gas and a ton on Novocain.

I am a natural red head, and have a horrible time with the heat. I feel it something awful, sweat like a pig, and burn at even the slightest hint of sunlight lol.

If I can remember where it was, I'll post here. That one stood out to me b/c I do feel I'm always the first one hot and the first one cold, but always thought it was b/c my thyroid is jacked up. Now not so sure. It also mentioned that reds somehow make our own Vit D. And of course I know ya can't believe everything on the net so maybe I shouldn't.be repeating.

Another natural redhead checking in! :wave2: I also am color enhanced to keep my red color. When I started going gray I felt like I was losing a part of my personality, so I brought it back! I have always been a flaming redhead.
This is the first year I have ever heard it called "Ginger".

Anyway ... Yes .... I have never tanned and I have loads of sensitivities.
My sunblock is my best friend while I am at WDW. I usually do WDW in early December, but a couple of years ago I went on May 1st. Every day was 90 degrees! One day in DHS I almost fainted from the heat!
While I don't wear a hat I almost always wear my sun visor.
I have had a couple of sunburns in my life, I have learned to stay out of the sun, or liberally use my sunblock.

At WDW I never use the pools in the day, but way prefer night swimming.

Another redhead here. I'm so fair, When I'm standing next to Snow White, I'm fairer than she is! I can literally burn in under 5 minutes.

1. Sunscreen - Sunscreen - Sunscreen!
2. I have to wear a long sleeve shirt and scarf when I'm outside no matter how hot it is. I will burn even with sunscreen
3. Cool Drinks and Shade/AC in the middle of the day.

Do you guys get the "disney rash" ever? On top of burning, I'm prone to rashes and every summer trip I get it. Not fun.

I'm a redhead (my hair was coppery before I went scarlet); I have the same problems. I burn in five seconds and I cannot do the heat. I've been lucky that for the past few years I've gotten to go to Disney in the winter/spring but this year I'm going in August so my best friend and I are trying to have as many things as possible with us to keep me from getting sick in the heat.

DS10 is a redhead - we pile on the sunscreen and he hasn't ever had a burn issue, but he gets really sweaty. Although in June we all do in Florida so I'm not sure that is related to his haircolor. DH and I were both blonde (at least as kids) and our dd6 is blond. DS never complains about the heat or seems to have trouble tolerating it. Florida humidity is just brutal on everyone.

My daughter is a redhead (20 years old). We found that during our last disney trip she did awesome when the weather was cloudy and stormy. But when it was sunny and hot, the grouchiness came out! I try to keep her inside as much as possible when we're there, for all our sakes! Lol. She doesn't really burn too badly because she has brown eyes. I think her skin is not quite as fair as redheads with blue or green eyes. But, boy that heat and humidity really gets to her!!

The above suggestions are great. My daughter keeps asking for us to go during Christmas instead. Maybe someday we will! That would be a cool gift for everyone, especially her!

I had never heard this before, but today I heard that redheads have a harder time in the heat. If you are a redhead, do you happen to find that true? I am a natural red head and have a terrible time in the heat. We went to WDW last year in June and the heat/humidity was so bad, that it really effected our trip. I would LOVE to go back to WDW, but for us, we can only go in the summer and I just don't know if I can take that heat again. I wish I could go in the months where it isn't as hot, but we are stuck to basic school vacations (I am a teacher) and the times it is cooler are always the busiest times. Any thoughts?

P.S.
Do you sunburn easily too? Oh my goodness, I burn sooo easy - another reason WDW in the summer is hard for us.

I'm surprised you are just finding this out! Redheads tend to be 'very' fair complexioned, so therefore would react to the sun's rays quicker (as far as burning).

As for 'feeling' the heat/humidity more - I don't agree with that. We 'all' (most) find it hard to deal with high heat/humidity regardless of our complexions.

I am a redhead and I have always had a hard time in direct sunlight. The heat itself is not a problem. For example I ride horses. In the summer I have to ride early/late or stay in an indoor. Put me into the sun and I about pass out. The same at WDW. As long as I keep to the shade I am fine. I also have a few spf shirts with long sleeves and great ventilation. Those make a big difference if I have to be in the sun.

I'm a natural ginger and have lived in FL all my life so the heat doesn't bother me. However I do have the fair skin so I have to layer on the sunblock or I will burn very quickly. No tan, just straight to red.

Add me to the list of redheads! :wave2: I don't love humid days, but much prefer them to the cold! I am completely cold intolerant. I burn easily, and just had a melanoma removed  so I have become extremely vigilant about using sunscreen. My major complaints with the heat and my fair skin are that I turn beet red if I am the least bit warm, and my face stays red for hours after I cool down. Completely embarrassing if I work out- people always ask me if I'm ok, like they think I'm having a heart attack or something. :crazy2: Also, if I get the least bit warm, my hands swell something terrible, no matter how much water I drink.

My DH is a redhead:love: we tried sunscreens, special clothes that block the sun, and hats, but the best solutions was... Parties! Our trips now center on MNSSHP. The tickets get us in at 4, when the worst of the sun has passed. We have 8 hours of park time and we don't have to even think about heat and sun for half of them. :)

Love your solution. I can't wait until my kids get older and I can utilize this solution as well. :goodvibes

I have never had this, but a good friend of mine (non ginger, but fair complexion) had this happen in Key West. She thinks it was heat rash - red bumps everywhere and itchy too. I am VERY picky about the sunscreen I use though. I look them up on the EWG skindeep database to see the toxicity in the ingredients. I know I have to use sunscreen, but want to use the non toxic stuff if I can.

I got my first burn of the year. I managed to be in the British Virgin Islands the week before Easter and didn't burn at all. I come back to IL and the first day it's above 70, I sit out and have lunch on my patio (under the umbrella) and I've got the farmer burn going on. I must be more careful!

I didn't know it was a redhead thing. I thought I was just me not liking the heat.

I'm a natural redhead and I love the heat. Never really had a problem with it anywhere, including WDW. Only real problem I have is the inability to tan...so it's lots of sunscreen for me! I'll be there next week!
