I wanted to stay on a beach and walk to town. Not familiar with Maine at all. I like places that are more down to earth, not really looking for luxury hotel.

I like to be in the middle of things. I like Provincetown, MA, Montauk and Ocean City, MD
Any ideas? Tent camping rec's are good too. Have two kids 12 & 14.

any particular place in Maine?

Southern Maine- beaches with "other stuff" (I assume that is what you mean in the middle of things?)

Ogunquit is the "picturesque" (fancier/pricier) town with a village/main street with shops/etc

Wells Beach also has restaurants/ etc though not as "fancy"

Old Orchard Beach has all the above, plus a small amusement park

All 3 are south of Portland, but 1/2 hour-ish drive in there if you'd like to do "city stuff" (such as Portland has, lol.)

I would like to stay on the beach but be able to walk to town. I don't want to have to use the car everyday. When I used the phrase "middle of things" I meant I didn't want to be in the "quiet" end of town, I prefer the convience of walking to town.

I wasn't intending on going into Portland or any city in Maine, I was looking more for a beach town.

I thought Wells looked good because my one dd and I love antiquing and my DH and younger dd like kayaking.

I just wanted the coast of Maine didn't care if it was Southern or North. We are heading out to Quebec after our Maine beach stay.

Old Orchid Beach looks nice too.

20 years ago I remember going to Bar Harbor with friends, got cheap waterview room and remember waking up to no waterview. I thought a catasrophe occured, til I learned about the tide. Any other places like that more south of Bar harbor?

I live in Maine, so I speak from experience! :)

I'd recommend Ogunquit or Wells - they both have cute villages and have trollys that can take you around (One is $1.00 per adult per trip - meaning time getting on - and the other is $1.50).

I'd VERY highly recommend NOT going to Old Orchard Beach. The beach is beautiful, but it's not the..umm...cleanest area in Maine. Lots of motorcycles (I have NOTHING against motorcycles, so please don't think I'm being stereotypical - I'm just pointing out the NOISE for the beach!), the 'amusement park' is not super amusing - tons and tons of teens and young adults - lots of partying, the area is just filthy most of the time, etc. I used to love OOB - and I still do - off-season. We went in March - it was great - only a few places were open and the beach was virtually empty.

Ogunquit and Wells are both beautiful. There are really NICE hotels in both places, and there are more budget hotels in both places. Plus tons of great restaurants!

we love York beach, have been going for many years.. There is short sands which is next to arcade and lots of shops .Long sands is beautiful!! there are trollies that run all day cheap and take you downtown.. there is also a small amusement park and zoo. York is very clean, beautiful and family friendly :)

Thank you all I knew I'd find good suggetions here, Thank you.

I live Here in wells. So if you have any specifics feel free to pm me. I will admit I live 5 minutes from the beach but I hate dealing with the traffic in the summer so we use the pool

we stay at the SeaMist resort in Wells and love it BUT not on the beach(about 4 min drive)

We live in Maine. We always liked York as another PP mentioned already. We enjoy Long Sands over Short Sands. My college room mate owns a day spa in Ogunquit. Also keep in mind that Maine has lakes and rivers as well. Lots of beautiful areas around the lakes area. A lot of poeple seem to like the Belgrade area if you decide on a lake vacation rather than a costal vacation, there are lots of options. People also like Boothbay and Bar Harbor which are on the coast.

we also loved York Beach..we stayed at the Atlantic Beach House there and were very happy with that choice. We plan to get back as soon as possible.
