I'm a realtor and have done everything from being a buyer's agent in the beginning, to working the foreclosure market presently.
I've been in the industry around five years and my husband, while a career firefighter, is also the owner/operator of a home inspection business.
Needless to say, our conversations center around real estate and it gets old!
There is good money in the career only if you bust your butt
big-time, or if you're
extremely lucky with a large sphere of influence (read: people you know, or know of you).
The industry also has a horrible reputation, due to the bad apples out there. You'll rarely hear about the good guys, but the bad guys will get lots of press, including here on the DIS. I do some serious tongue-biting, but let it rip every now and then.
(There are several real estate agents on here that I know of.)
I think due to the potential for a large income, the industry attracts close scrutiny. Nobody likes giving away a portion of their assets and if they think you aren't worth it, they'll think they can do your job. It's the nature of the business.
Advertising! You have to do it, because everyone tells you to.

Unfortunately, it can be like throwing your money away. Sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn't. The really bad part of that, is you have to do it for a reasonable time to get noticed and that costs big bucks. (I spent over $20k my first year getting started)
Bottom line - whatever you've been told that's positive about the career, shave it down by about 30%, because it's not all fun and games and you can go months and months and months without a paycheck. You have to be prepared for that, or you're setting yourself up for failure.
