Seriously - if you are going to be in the kitchen or at the computer for a while, get a low laundry basket, wad up a towel or a blanket and throw it in there, put her in it, then throw a bone it it. See if it works. I found out this worked because I had a basket of dirty clothes one day and I found her resting quietly in it!

EDT- They do make this holistic stuff called "Pet Calm" its at Petco. I used it on them when we drove across the country and it did mellow them out a little- I have also seen them in Mikes Feed Farm and J&B Pet Supply in Oakland - not sure what part of Jerz your from.

Puggles did this forever! But it wasn't just at night. Every time we put her in her crate, she'd go in willingly, but then she'd bark and yowl. Her crate was on the first floor and our bedrooms are on the 2nd floor. She'd give up after about 5 minutes.

Prancer has never barked, unless the doorbell rings or when Puggles was doing it, when she's in her crate.

We just learned to ignore her.

Well, I tried this out. My luck...my leggy little pug just jumped right out of the basket. Lasted for all of 30 seconds. Back to the drawing board!

My pug Roscoe was a bit to handle as a puppy. but as he aged things have really worked out well. He was good at crating which helped with house breaking. Our problem is he chews up every bed we get him. He loves to rip them open and fling the filling everywhere. Anyone have any ideas what to do with that? the bed may last until you wash it then it is done for.

i'm babysitting two pugs right now. my sister went to vegas with my parents and i got stuck with all the dogs. i don't mind my parents' dog, benji; but i stongly dislike the pugs (the ugly pugleys). otis (real name puglet, what a sissy girl name), the boy, is 4 i think and is still not fully housebroken (one of the reasons i dislike him). missy (my sister is not a good namepicker imo), the girl, is a little poop. she licks constantly, barks at everything and jumps on you and scratches you with her demon claws.

sorry... rant over... i just think they aren't the smartest dogs ever and crate training would be your best bet. it has sort of worked for my sister's two.

as for the whining... the pennies in the soda can trick might work. or smack the top of the crate (i did that with zara). not hard enough to scare her, but enough to distract her.

they are sweet dogs though. sometimes otis will curl up next to me and snooze, but then demon-girl has to jump all over us and wreck it.

Our pugs ate two couches so I don't know what to tell you about that. I just really tried to keep bones available at all times as they love to chew. I usually buy what I call "boney sticks" which are a pork roll twist. You can get them in Petco and Walmart. They seem to be the favorite. Trader Joe's also has good bones.

As they get older they outgrow it.



KeepMovingForward - like I said above she just needs to outgrow her puppy stage. It just feels like forever. You'll see, she'll be seeking out a nesting spot in no time, and you will have to go hunting for her in your house!

I had to laugh at your post (in a good way). It reminds me of how I feel when I get stuck sitting my MIL's bichons...I call them the bi*chons.

I've done the hitting the cage, covering it, ignoring her, you name it. I guess if I survived my kids growing up, I'll survive this! Patience is not my strong suit though!

Yes, it DOES feel like forever. I think I am cured of my puppyitis for a while!

Wish i could help on this one. My Daisy has taken to ripping open her doggie beds too. She used to have the really cute 101 Dalmatians bed in her cage...that didn't last too long-she had the filler all over the place and it hit the garbage over the weekend. These dogs certainly are spunky little suckers! wouldn't trade mine for the world, but she works my last nerve at times.

The ONLY bed that Puggles didn't destroy was one that I bought years ago. It has metal legs and the material is like that of a director's chair. I guess it's canvas. It has 3 higher sides and a lower side on the front for jumping in and out. She loved that bed but for the life of me, I can't remember where I bought it. It's bed was raised like a sling. She never chewed on it and would often times take a toy into it for her chewing pleasure.

On another note, I had to take Prancer to the vet tonight to make sure that her anemia was caused by the pneumonia she had instead of being long term. On our way home, we stopped in Petsmart to buy bird seed. There were 4 other pugs in Petsmart at the same time we were. Who'd have thought that would happen. to your pug & you - I hate them getting old.
My oldest will be 11 and he is not looking so hot. The vet doen't know what to do about the hair falling out, so he goes back again this week. This time for blood. I'm worried. I tried the holistic stuff and it's not working.
He also has taken to sleeping on the floor and not in bed. He has trouble getting up and down the stairs worse than before.

I doubt I can ever have another dog at all bc she is such an angel. I know she has some hearing loss so we kind of have to scream at her when we talk. It's sort of comical actually! ALso she is quite small and chubby. The vet says she has a thyroid condition, which is funny bc SO DO I!

I love seeing all the pix, esp of the puppies. Pugs are the CUTEST puppies in the world! Keep posting them, please?

Well as I sit here in tears it seems as thought my above post was quite prophetic. Yesterday we lost our beloved Daisy to cancer. We were blessed to have her for 11 years (her bday was just a day before she passed away). I can't really describe the loss I am feeling other than to use the word devastating. SHe gave us no signs of being ill at all until abt 24 hours before she died, but an xray revealed extensive cancer in her lungs. We will miss her always and love her forever .

So my black pug is not the only one who does the excessive licking? Depending on the day, he'll "groom" one of our other dogs, our legs, he'll lick his bed, and he once went through spurt where he licked mud (yuck!). It's weird b/c he licks in the same exact spot the entire time.

With regards to the potty training, he took a good 6 months to a year and I have heard from others that this is pretty common.

Ours is the most calm animal on the planet and is so NOT a one person dog. Whoever is petting him at that moment is who he is loyal to. I can be calling his name over and over but if someone is petting him, he won't budge. As soon as that person takes their hand off of him, he comes right away.

If cloning ever comes down in price before he passes, I swear I will clone him. They are the greatest little animals; clowns and big dogs in a small dog's body. My husband got Milo for me for Valentine's and swore he would never like him; he only got him for me. Guess who treats the dog like the biggest baby now? Yup, DH. These dogs win everyone over.

We're actually going to the Pug Party in Chicago October 4th at Zella's--maybe I'll see you there! Can't get enough of this breed and I will ALWAYS own one.

I'm so sorry about your Daisy. It's absolutely horrible when a beloved pet passes away. I've had many dogs over the years and it is never easy when you lose them. The good thing is that you had 11 wonderful years with her. Lots of hugs!

Our puggy punctured his eye. I know this is ocmmon with them, but it never happened to the one I grew up with. He is on all kinds of creams but I was curious who out there has experience with this and how long it took your dog to heal?

Thank you for your kind words The other thing that just kills me is that I left her at the hospital and she watched me walk out the door with that "don't leave me" face. I honestly had no idea the end was so close, but I can't shake that the last time she saw me, she saw me walking away from her. If they had just had time to call me before she died, I could have been with her. It's just killing me.

We've had 3 pugs over the years (none now - Buddy, Sandy & Bentley) and man, they can shed like a blizzard! We have a Yorkie now (Ellie), no shedding.

I am so sorry for your lose. I just don't know what I will do when that time comes for Roscoe. We are all here if you need to talk.

Little update on the bed eating Roscoe. I broke down and bought the Orvis toughchew dog bed. So far it has made it. and if is doesn't they will replace it or refund my money.

Stinkerbell317, I'm so sorry for your loss. Puggles went to Rainbow Bridge a year ago on Saturday. I can't believe it's been a year already. She'll always be remembered, even our parakeet says, "Puggles, Prancer and Bloo" all the time.

Time will heal your pain. Don't beat yourself up over leaving Daisy alone to die. Pugs, just like humans, know how they want to go. Some will be surrounded by family and others will wait for the family to go. Chances are that your Daisy was one who wanted to spare you the memory of watching her go. She knew that you loved her. That's what matters more than anything else.
