How often do you get your Lhasa Apso hair groomed?

Once every 4-6 weeks with the groomer, although we sometimes bathe him ourselves, but he doesn't come out as nice. Our groomer charges $35. We also do not let the coat get long like you would with a show dog. His tail is always fluffy and full like a feather duster even when the rest of him is not. He very often can go months without a haircut. Here's what he looks like:

He was also exceptionally easy to train. I think within 4-6 weeks he was fully trained. We let him out 4 times a day at the same time and never had a problem. He really is a dream dog.

If you are worried about whether a dog sheds or not, you don't want a pug. You can vacuum up a spare dog just about every day from the amount that they shed, especially when you get a pug, like Prancer, who is double coated.

Ooooh! Me, me, I have a pug.

We love our Ruby and she is very spoiled. We got her when she was 2 months old, and she is 2 1/2 now. When DH and I were dating I used to make him take me to Barnes & Noble and buy me pug books and calendars, so when we were trying to decide what type of dog to get- a pom or a pug- we had to get her. Plus she was the cutest thing we had ever laid our eyes on

She does cry 'real tears' and it is pretty hilarious. We used to have her sleep in a crate next to our bed when we got her (mistake having her so close to us!) and one night she was crying so loud and she sounded so sad that my husband got her out and put her in our bed. She's been sleeping in it ever since

Pugs are high maintence. When we first got her I didn't work so she was with me ALL DAY. I worked for a short period and we would come home to her moping around- she HATES to be alone. Now that I don't work she is acting much happier! I'm sure there are some pugs out there that don't mind being alone, but since that was what she was used to, it really affected her. She is laying next to me on the couch as we speak (I mean, type. )

Another pug owner chiming in.

I don't see Pugs a high maintenance, just high priced maintenance This year $800.00 for standard shots and check up and for complete blood work and valley fever testing. We moved from NH to AZ and it has been an adjustment for Chu. He hated the cold weather and he isn't thrilled with the desert heat, He does love to nap in the sunshine that comes in the windows. He sheds enough for a new Pug at least weekly. He sleeps in bed with us, and LOVES my husband more than he loves me. They do need a lot of people attention, I used to leave him home crated for about 5 or 6 hours a day when I worked, he never seemed to mind. Now I am at home all the time and he mostly stays where ever I am. He LOVES to ride in the car and when the weather is good, I take him everywhere.

I was so fortunate that I found him at the ASPCA, the best day of his life was the day he was given up for adoption. Because he now has the life that all Pugs want, lots of food, water and love.

Oh hi Mickeyfan-nice seeing you here! I'll just talk to you here

We used to live in Vegas - so I know the pork chop smell well! We had a house with a pool and one day one of them decided to take a ride on one of the pool floats , so be careful if you have a pool.

My pugs LOVED Vegas and were depressed when we moved back to smelly /freezing ole Jerz. We had a house with a dog door and they loved going in and out as they pleased so we put one in here.
Your pug will adjust - I think it's the move itself that depresses them for a while. I think they are afraid you might leave them. They just don't understand "moving". Mine are now panicked when they see me unpacking christmas stuff out of a box! I have to say "we are not moving again!"

Did you drive or fly with your puggy?

We drove. 5 days. He loved it, he just doesn't get the hotel part. But he was great the whole time. Once we got the movers in with the furniture, and most of the boxes unpacked the first week, he was fine.

And sorry about the highjack! But to the OP, some pugs do take a while. Chu was housebroken when I adopted him, but about 6 moths into it, he decided to lift his leg, on everything. I ended up putting a belly band on him, they are great for male dogs. He still lifted, but the tinkle stayed in the band, complete with liner pad. After a few weeks, no more liner pad, and finally, after about 6 months, no more band. It's been a year now. Yay for us.

We drove it in 3 days TWICE!!! My pugs peed in every hotel room-sorry Motel 6 , that's what you get for allowing animals! Oh - and they love drive-thru windows with food! My DH kept promising them McGridles and I kept saying no way cause the gas from 3 pugs in a car for 3 days was not pretty

I WANT that belly band - do tell where to get it!

My pugs had probs when we moved, too. I am still having probs w/ the adopted one. Do they wear it like a diaper ?- cause I have plenty of those, I could always put one on him!

Okay, I need more advice from you seasoned pug owners. Is there anything special I can do to deter the whining and wailing? At first it was really funny and cute, but now its just driving us all up the wall. I tried a citronella collar, but our dog actually LIKES the smell. I don't know what else I can do.

She's been to the vet as recently as last week. She jumps around like a pug on crack...so I don't think she's in pain. Yes, the whining and wailing is when she is in the crate...but for some reason she only does it in the evenings. During dinner I anticipate it...she smells our food, so I understand that one (we do feed her at the same time to try and head that off, but it doesn't work...we accept it). But long after dinner right up until we go up to bed, she is nuts. We can't even hold a conversation because she is so constant and loud with it.

I don't think DH would ever allow the dog in our room, let alone our bed! She's fine during the night, so I assume its wanting attention while we are around. She is an attention hog and very needy. She also howls if you leave her sight (during the day). Every time I leave the kitchen/family room area, she freaks. I hope your right about the hyperactivity and calming down as she ages. We play with her quite a bit as it is. If we could hold her while watching tv, that would be fine...but she wriggles all over the place and literally just wants to run and jump the whole time she is not in her crate. My patience is just wearing thin right now. I hope this passes soon...please tell me it will!

Seriously - if you are going to be in the kitchen or at the computer for a while, get a low laundry basket, wad up a towel or a blanket and throw it in there, put her in it, then throw a bone it it. See if it works. I found out this worked because I had a basket of dirty clothes one day and I found her resting quietly in it!

EDT- They do make this holistic stuff called "Pet Calm" its at Petco. I used it on them when we drove across the country and it did mellow them out a little- I have also seen them in Mikes Feed Farm and J&B Pet Supply in Oakland - not sure what part of Jerz your from.
