We may not be able to arrive when we planned to originally and may need to check in a day later. Other than the wated points, is there any problem with doing so? I assume I would have to notify them (DVC or the resort?)

You can cancel the first day and recover the points. If it's less than 30 days until your check in, the recovered points will go into holding.

If you don't contact them about it they will cancel you reservation and you will lose all your points.

So I can cancel the first day without canceling the whole reservation and re booking?

Depending on when you will arrive, it might be worthwhile keeping the reservation and you will have a room waiting for you whenever you arrive. If you will not arrive until after 4pm on the 2nd day, I would cancel (if you are doing that within 30 days of arrival the points will be in Holding status).

Otherwise, just call the resort and let them know you will be arriving a day late. They will NOT cancel your reservation and our room will be waiting whenever you arrive. Late arrivals are not a problem at all, but I;d still call to let the resort know you'll be late.

Good luck!

We've arrived late on two different occasions without any problems. Although we were told that it wasn't necessary, we did call the resort to let them know. They told us the room was ours whenever we arrived.
