I would suggest looking in the North Hills. We lived in Hampton Township and loved it. The area is very nice and the school district is great.

Plenty of open areas still but you are close to the city, Oakland. You are close to the turnpike and interstate so it is easy to get around.

Before I got married I lived in Upper St. Clair and that was a great area also.

Wow - there are lots of Pittsburgh area DISers! We really should have a DIS meet sometime....

We are in West Allegheny School District (Oakdale) and the area is quite nice. There is a bunch of new construction around here and the houses are lovely. I teach in Moon and that is great too!

We just moved in August so no winter feed-back from here...but I grew up in Buffalo so I'm not too worried!

If you are looking for new construction, the newer areas tend to be to the north or west of the city. I live in Robinson Township and that is a very growing area with a new mall, lots of new restaurants and housing developments. It is also very accessible to I-79, the airport and town. The areas near Imperial, Oakdale and North and South Fayette townships are also close to there and have a lot of new construction as well. For 350-400K you can get a very nice, four bedroom home, more than 2500 square feet.

Areas in the north that have already been mentioned are Pine Township, Marshall Township,and Cranberry. You will find things a bit more expensive there --the house we built started at 50K more in Pine than it did in Robinson.

I think most of hte suburban school districts are fine, there's really not a huge difference there, especially compared to nationally. Some of the poorer districts are in trouble but in the 350-400K range you won't be anywhere near there anyway.

I have to agree with everyone else...Cranberry Twp seems like what you're looking for. It can get pretty congested though.

Also near Pine-Richland, Gibsonia has many new developments going up. It's close to the turnpike ~ also you could shoot down Route 8...less than an hour to the city.

You might want to look into N. Huntingdon in Westmoreland county as well. They have very nice homes and a great school district-Norwin. Easy access to everything, about 30 min. from downtown. Of course, I'm biased I grew up there. Currently living in Indiana, PA can't wait to move back "home."

Oh - and winters are iffy around here. But I am hearing that we are supposed to have a very frigid one this year.

Pittsburgh usually doesn't get as much snow as my area for some strange reason.

Another Pittsburgher here

I live in the South Hills and I definately prefer it over the North. Some nice neighborhoods in the South Hills are Upper St. Clair, Mt. Lebanon, Peters Township, North Strabane Twp, Bethel Park and a few others. All have good school districts. Mt. Lebanon does not provide tranasportation for its school children so if that is an issue I would cross it off your list immediately. The South Hills has a better public transporation system into the city (subway) if that is of interest to you.

Pittsburgh is unique in that our Downstown is isolated by the rivers and you have to cross a bridge from just about any direction to get into it. That can make commutes a little challenging!

Cranberry Twp is nice and newer but it is really congested! Plus traffic to the city in the morning can be a nightmare!

I would be more than happy to answer any questions you have!

BTW, I would love to have a Pittsburgh DIS meet (Kennywood would be great!)

I haven't had a chance to read any responses except 3 at this point- but wanted to let you all know how over whelmed I was when I got up this morning and saw the reponses I got ! Oh my GOSH!!! You guys are all so great! I'll come back and post again when I'm done reading, but for now wanted you to know I am talking about $350,000- 450,000 range for a house- I saw there was a question about that in the beginning! Wouldn't it be great if we could buy a house for 450 dollars???

In certain parts of W VA, that's a strong possibility. And also along the creekbank near where I live!!

Heeeeeeeeeey to all of the Pittsburghers!! What a gloomy Friday it is!! To the OP - there are a ton of great suburban neighborhoods - I grew up in the North Hills and will probably go back there when we decide to have kids. I'll drop you a PM with some more info. I've written down all of the towns you've suggested and now I'm gonna go look at homes on the internet. Is there a local reality company there in your area?
Please, tell me....... can people from Pittsburgh spell??? I had to correct 6 words in this post before I posted! Of course, I was educated in the Cleveland, Ohio area- which is why I only had 6 mistakes! I can multiply up into the 12 x's as well. That's right! I can do 1x12 and 12x12 REALLY good... INSTANTLY- no hesitation at all!!! ) ..... I'll bet none of you guys can do that!
I am so looking forward to moving back to the neighborhood. While we like Oregon and the state is absolutely beautiful, we really miss the history and people of your area. I'm a little outdone here by this west coast living- they're way out of my league.
