Ok, I just found this thread, and I have to stick up for the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh!! We've lived in Monroeville for the past 20 years, and absolutely LOVE it! Close to the parkway and the turnpike. DH works in Cranberry, and we thought about living there, but with all the development, it's crazy! He'll come home from work and say how glad he is that we don't live there. (Sorry all you Cranberry DIS-ers!). The Gateway School district is great, one of the better-performing public school districts around. (Our DS's are 13 and 15, public school the whole way.) And the Gateway Marching Band ROCKS!!!
Monroeville is a mix of old and new; we've pretty much maxed-out commercial development wise, but there are still some newer neighborhoods being built. In fact, our local paper this week had an article on how strong the real estate market is in Monroeville. Here's a link:
Times Express
I work in downtown Pittsburgh and take a bus to work; the commute is about 35-45 min.
Pittsburgh and Monroeville are in Allegheny County, and the taxes are a bit high. The next community heading out east from Pittsburgh is Murrysville, which is in Westmoreland County. Lower taxes, and Murrysville has a lot of new development, both commercial and residential. You'll be looking at a longer commute into town, but only about 15 or 20 min. more.
I grew up in West Mifflin, and DH grew up in Bethel Park, both south of Pittsburgh. Both are older neighborhoods. We both like Monroeville better.
