Any Pittsburgh Disers out there??

I agree with all the postings about the areas(like Haygan I live in the South Hills also) but I live in an older boro known as Dormont. For Dormont it is convenience and more convenience. It also depends what you meant about $350-$450. If $350,000 you should have no problem finding a newer home. From a South Hills resident I will give the vote to Mt. Lebanon, Bethel Park and Upper St. Clair.
Good Luck and Welcome!

Did you say Cleveland? :rolleyes1 If you really want to get along in this town you will have to learn how to bleed black and gold. :teeth:

:cheer2: GO STEELERS! :cheer2:

I don't bleed brown and orange.... those are UGLY colors! I bleed yellow and...... GREEN

GO PACK!!!

But the Pack is crummy this year, so I'd ahve no problem changing my allegiance to yellow and black IF they are winning! I remember back in the day I did cheer for Pittsburgh- that was when Terry Bradshaw and all those guys played for Pittsburgh. Now those were the days!

LOL! I was going to say...well, if you are a Browns fan then.....sorry....you can't move here! ;) :rolleyes1 :teeth:

and isn't it funny how if you grow up in the North part of Pittsburgh, you don't go to the south or like the south...but if you grow up in the south..you don't venture to the north? I thought of that when I read what someone said about Cranberry being congested and I thought ....I would never live in the south where you had to go through the tunnels to get there! LOL! To me...that's congested! :teeth:

LOL, that is so true. Except, I am born and raised 'South Hills' and I wouldn't mind living north of Pgh. It just would be a hassle visiting family (they are all here)

I live in Center Twp. Beaver County about 35 min. from downtown.
Our school district is great and the crime rate is low in our community. Not too developed like Cranberry and Robinson Twp. But we are in a building boom right now. Houses to buy go from about 75,000. - 400,000. If your talking renting that is about 450.-1500. a month. I hope this helps.

Center's nice and you would get a lot of house for $400k. I've driven through that one new neighborhood. It's huge. It's really growing, too. When's that Super Target opening?

Ok, I just found this thread, and I have to stick up for the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh!! We've lived in Monroeville for the past 20 years, and absolutely LOVE it! Close to the parkway and the turnpike. DH works in Cranberry, and we thought about living there, but with all the development, it's crazy! He'll come home from work and say how glad he is that we don't live there. (Sorry all you Cranberry DIS-ers!). The Gateway School district is great, one of the better-performing public school districts around. (Our DS's are 13 and 15, public school the whole way.) And the Gateway Marching Band ROCKS!!!

Monroeville is a mix of old and new; we've pretty much maxed-out commercial development wise, but there are still some newer neighborhoods being built. In fact, our local paper this week had an article on how strong the real estate market is in Monroeville. Here's a link: Times Express

I work in downtown Pittsburgh and take a bus to work; the commute is about 35-45 min.

Pittsburgh and Monroeville are in Allegheny County, and the taxes are a bit high. The next community heading out east from Pittsburgh is Murrysville, which is in Westmoreland County. Lower taxes, and Murrysville has a lot of new development, both commercial and residential. You'll be looking at a longer commute into town, but only about 15 or 20 min. more.

I grew up in West Mifflin, and DH grew up in Bethel Park, both south of Pittsburgh. Both are older neighborhoods. We both like Monroeville better.

I just IM my DH and told him about this thread..he said we are a strange household because we cross the bridges :rotfl: but it is chore for Pghers to cross over the bridges. We actually go to Pittsburgh Mills. Anyone taking their kids to ZooBoo(looks like next weekend for us because of the weather)?

Magalex :grouphug:

I always forget about the Zoo Boo, and I have a pass. Thanks for reminding me. My son has the flu, today, so we'll look at the calendar for next week, too.

Amy, I always think the commute from the East to downtown seems difficult. It seems there is often a back-up in those tunnels getting into town. It's tough on the West side with our tunnels, too. If you're living in a newer community, the North probably has the best commute to downtown, because they don't have to go through a tunnel or around a hill. They still have the bridge, but that doesn't seem so bad.

Off-topic, but since the Pittsburgh-area DISers are reading this, I just had to put in a plug for:

The Gateway High School Marching Band is hosting the Contest of Champions tomorrow, Oct. 22, at our high school. Gates open 4:30, first band performs at 5:45. There are 14 bands, including Gateway. Come on out and see some extremely talented kids!

Can you tell I'm a band mom through-and-through? :teeth:

By the way, I'll be selling programs at the contest; if you come, look for me and say hi!!

See Amy....Monroeville would mean driving the parkway east and there is no way in heck I would do that every day! LOL! :teeth: :rotfl:

Magalex, I have been to Pittsburgh Mills several times....Nice new mall! ( I grew up in Blawnox so my parents live near there) :teeth:

Pittsburghers are so set in our ways!!! When I go to FI's house (he lives in Penn Hills) I despise going "all the way over there" ;) from the North Hills. We're looking to move to Greentree to rent for a few years (because being close to work is our only priority right now) and my mom is acting like we're moving to the West Coast!! I keep hearing "but I haaaaate driving the Parkway West!!" lol!! Heck, I love Pittsburgh even if we are set in our ways. :)

Yep, we Pittsburghers ARE set in our ways! We all pretty much stick to our own part of town. Boy, growing up in West Mifflin, I spent just about every Saturday at Century III Mall; now when I head out there to visit my dad, I just HATE all that traffic on Route 51. But Route 22 in Monroeville doesn't bother me at all. Go figure.

Yep, the Parkway East can be a bear; that's why I ride the bus. The bus doesn't go the Parkway all the way to town - it gets off in Wilkinsburg and takes the busway. Besides, on the bus, someone else is driving and I can get some extra sleep!

LOL! I moved to Greentree right after college for two years. And my dad had a fit when he heard that. You would have thought I was making him drive two hours to get there because he had to go through the Fort Pitt bridge and tunnel! :teeth: :rotfl: I will say that I hated if I had to go somewhere in the morning at rush hour...I would usually wait till ten to try to brave Greentree hill!

Amy...I used to shop only in Monroeville when I was growing up but the thought of 22 now makes me shudder in horror! :teeth: :rotfl:

Although McKnight Road isn't much better...that's why I have been taking the turnpike to Pittsburgh Mills! :teeth:

my inlaws live in Carrick....and they act like I live in the boonies.....they hate to come "all the way out here!" :teeth: (takes 30 mins tops!)

I will say though....I am pretty good about going all over. Im not as bad as my parents or others who won't drive somewhere because it's all the way over there! :teeth: I think it's because I have lived in alot of the different areas.

but .....Cranberry is best of course! ;) :p :teeth: :rotfl: :rotfl:
:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Does anyone here know about a big civil engineering project that will be going on in the downtown area? My DH's company is going to bid that job and that's why I'm looking.; It would be underground construction- maybe something to do with the sewers or a subway?? He doesn't know exactly where it is- and I want to tell him before he tells me!
(only 2 spelling corrections this time!) I'm getting better (make that 3!)

Well, I know they've been talking about building an extension of the subway system that will go under the Allegheny River connecting downtown to the North Side. Wonder if that's the project?

LOL, Pghers are a frustrated bunch....let me tell you why:

a) the 5 months of gray skies...

b) this is a small city, getting from a to b (like the south hills to monroeville or cranberry or wherever) SHOULD NOT TAKE SO LONG. These areas are like within 10 air miles of each other and we know it, so it's frustrating that you have to zigzag and up, down, all around, hills, tunnels and bridges to get there. Know what I mean?

Anything more than a 20 minute commute is considered a pain in the butt to most Pghers. I guess you could call us slightly impatient.
