Any Pittsburgh Disers out there??

I live an hour outside of downtown, with traffic, and there are moms my age here who haven't been to Pittsburgh in years. If they do go downtown, it's their husbands who drive them to the zoo or Kennywood.

My sick son seems to be feeling all better (it was just a 24 hour thing I guess), so I told him we could hop in the car and go to the Science Center or Children's Museum in a bit. I can't imagine missing out on the fun stuff downtown.

Yep, Pittsburghers don't move too far away from their respective regions. I love the South Hills, the West and North are ok, and I would NEVER EVER live in the Eastbut to each their own! (I worked in Cranberry for several years so I feel that I have the right to talk about the congestion ;) ) I work near the West End now and it takes me about 20 - 25 minutes to get to work during rush hour (~15 miles)

You can definately get a beautiful home in most desirable neighborhoods for $350 - 400k (DH is a realtor/mortgage broker so PM me if you want a reference :teeth: )

The project sounds like it would be the extension of the subway (or T as we call it) from town to the stadiums and convention center. Big waste of $$ if you ask me but at least it would be good for your DH!

We went to Zoo Boo last year and swore that we will NEVER go back! The wait to get it took forever and then the kids had to wait 30+ minutes at each station to get a lousy piece of candy! It is cool to see the zoo like that but so much is closed and the crowds are terrible!!!

Pittsburgh has lots of great stuff within and around the city/area!

We'll be going to the science center next weekend! DH got free passes from work a while back and we have to use them before the end of the month.

I love the aviary. I try to go every chance I get. :goodvibes

The aviary is having a fall event I think every SAT. this month also. What is also is very nice and beautiful during the holiday season is Phipps in Oakland they have Family New Year's Eve party. It is open to the public from 6-9 New Year's Eve. Admission at the door, hats for everyone, treats/crafts for children, calypso band and all the children dance around. At 8:45 they have a countdown for the children to ring in the New Year. Probably not too exciting for the over 8 crowd but younger children love it. Great event with the grandparents too. Check out the website

Just saw this thread and had to add my 2 cents.

I live in the South Hills (Bethel Park), and I love the area. Mt. Lebo is a good school dist., but like someone mentioned, there are no school buses. Bethel and Upper St. Clair are good too and there are lots of houses w/ lots of land. The subway system runs 2 blocks from my house. Driving to downtown is 20-30 min.

Amy - I grew up in West Mifflin and did many trips to Century III.

Lou being a woman????? That made my day!!! :rotfl:

Well, I am pretty familiar with all areas of the city -- grew up in the West, college in the South, law school in the East and my brother went to college in the North. Iwill say that honestly the worst traffic is coming from the East and that is b/c of the Squirrel Hill Tunnel, and there's just no easy way to go around it. My husband is from Greensburg and he had to make that drive for three years to visit me when I was in law school and there were times I thought he'd have a breakdown from sitting in that traffic. LOL

I'd say honestly the best traffic situation is coming from the North (no tunnels), then West, then South, then East is worst. I live in the West and I get to town without going through the Ft. Pitt tunnel -- IMHO it's easier to avoid the tunnel from that direction than from the East. In the south the light rail is a nice alternative.

All of this info is so valuable! I talked to DH and asked him if this project had anything to do with a subway- he said he didn't really know, but when I mentioned to him that bids were taken in August a nd the job was being re-bid.... well that he recognized! He wants me to save all info you've given so far, including articles so he can read up on it. So- thanks from DH!

I just went to AAA to get a map of Pittsburg and PA so I can see where all these palces are that you're all talking about. I'm off to do some exploring.

Haygan- thanks for the realtor hook up :) I'll let ya know if we need help!

I just IM my DH and told him about this thread..he said we are a strange household because we cross the bridges :rotfl: but it is chore for Pghers to cross over the bridges. We actually go to Pittsburgh Mills. Anyone taking their kids to ZooBoo(looks like next weekend for us because of the weather)?

Magalex :grouphug:

Yup we are doing the zooboo - it will probably be PACKED next weekend but this one is shaping up to be WET.

30 minutes for candy???? Forget it - we'll find another Halloween activity. After waiting for 90 minutes to see Cinderella at the Robinson Mall I'm done waiting in line with the kids for awhile.
