So, we rented points at the BWV for December of this year. I have never done it before and was just wondering...are there any perks, discounts, extra goodies, etc. to be had by those of us who are renting points from a DVC member?

Trust me, I'm thrilled beyond belief that we're going to The World at Christmas...so that really is enough, but it doesn't hurt to help the budget out just that littttttle bit extra, right?? :goodvibes

You get all the same perks that any resort guest will get - free parking, send your packages to your resort, EMH, etc. You are not entitled to any DVC member perks.

That's what I thought...the free valet parking just sounded too good to be true ;)

The last time we rented points we used the free valet parking every day at the BWV. We were told we could have all the same benefits as the member. I think our room key had DVC printed on it.

Often DVC gives renters perks, but renters are entitled to no perks. Usually the front desk will even hand you the perk flyer. Keys usually say DVC member on them (or a variant if you have the dining plan) but sometimes members are asked for their member card as well. DVC doesn't have a good way to tell at check in who is a member, who is a guest and who is a renter.

According to our paperwork, renters are not eligible for DVC Member perks, like valet parking. However, sometimes the CMs will take the room key. You may be able to get some dining discounts, or shopping discounts...but they are asking for the actual membership card for more and more of the perks. You will NOT be able to get the DVC discount on Annual Passes, or admission to DVC specific events, like Member get togethers. Everything else is a "maybe." If you ask, and they decline, they are following official printed policy.

There's the "rule book" answer (which Deb & Bill and others gave you) and the "what really happens" answer.

The "what really happens" answer is that unless your landlord identifies you as a renter, your KTTW card will have "DVC Member" printed on it. Naturally, landlords understand that their rental is more valuable if they don't identify their renters as such, so most don't.

After that, it depends on the specific perk and the Cast Member involved. Some perks/Cast Members absolutely require the Blue Member ID. For example, you aren't getting the AP discount unless you have it. For some of the lesser perks, and some cast members, they're a bit more lax about it.

Valet parking is in that grey zone where you won't really know until you get to the stand each time. My hunch is that the valets are generally pretty generous about handing it out, because they get paid either way, and their tips are better when they aren't charging people.

But, even if you are a DVC member, you may get charged for valet parking. Then you have to go to the front desk and have the charge removed. They should ask to see your blue member card at that point.

It should be noted that according to the DVC documents, owners must identify renters when a reservation is made. Those who choose not to are in violation of the terms of their membership.

That's true but historically DVC has never documented this information nor passed it along to the resorts. In past years it was almost universal that anyone who was renting would have a KTTW card that said member on it even when you identified the renters. This MAY be evolving to a degree as they have done better with the KTTW notations the last couple of years. Still, I've seen no indication that the resort knew that a "guest" was a renter even when that info was given to MS.

What about relatives who travel with us but they aren't owners? They are guests, not renters. Still, they aren't owners either.

We did a family reunion a year or so ago and all of the cards for the 12 of us said "DVC member" on them. I don't know that any of the relatives got any perks with them, but they certainly could have.

Is there any way to get the blue member cards made up onsite - because we leave tomorrow and I lost mine - lol. I have NEVER been asked for it though so....

Yes---the valets are known to charge your resort account even if they aren't supposed to. They get the account from the parking pass. This is a problem with the Tables in Wonderland card, too.

I pre-empt the issue by dropping my resort parking pass in my glove box before pulling up to the valet station. I haven't had a charge for valet show up yet, but I don't often use it.

That's correct, but there is no mechanism for enforcement---and I'm not really sure there could be unless the front desks start subjecting guests to the Orlando Inquisition. I think it would be simpler to stop extending perks to any non-Members, but that might be more trouble than it is worth.

Guests who stay with the member may be entitled to some of the perks. Such as dining perks when they are dining with the member. Or pool hopping perk when they are pool hopping with the member. The Public Offering Statement does state this, but it doesn't get specific with what they may be entitled to.
