Wow, you guys are great-THANK YOU so much for these suggestions!! My BFF lives in Scottsdale and we are heading out there at the end of April to scope out the area and the apartments.
I know that Tempe is out for us, just because it seems too "college'y" for us. We are a couple in our early 30's and we currently live around the corner from a university in Boston. We can't stand the noisy college kids & how run down they've made the area where we live now. We will be renting an apt when we get out there, so likely be surrounded by college kids if we moved to Tempe. I do like the center of town in Tempe though (Baseline area).
We were also thinking about Old Town Scottsdale-I don't know much about this area except for the shopping

Any thoughts????
I think I passed through Mesa once, but I don't remember it. So this is a safe area?
Chandler and Glendale are also on our list of potential places.
We are basically looking to rent a nice, but inexpensive (inexpensive compared to Boston apts mind you!! Right now, we pay $1400/month for a run down one bedroom in a very convenient location but it's very expensive!!). We are interested in being situated in an area that might allow us to walk to a store once in a while if we wanted to, possibly a mountain view!! I'd prefer to live close by my BFF who lives in Scottsdale, but open to other areas.
I'm a special ed. teacher and DBF is a waiter at Flemings Steakhouse-I think there are 3 in the phoenix area (he is in process of getting computer certifications to change jobs, but will likely transfer to one of the AZ Flemings when we move). Safety is very important to me, as DBF works late at night sometimes and I tend to be a scared little girl when I'm alone at night!!
So all those areas you mentioned above have good school systems? That's very good to know.
Please feel free to PM me or offer any more advise on our moving situation-I'd gladly appreciate any advice you have to offer as far as locations, locations to avoid, names of great apartment complexes, specific school systems and what you like about them,....I work primarily with young children with autism, but am content and capable of teaching other populations of young children with special needs.
Thanks!!!
