THAT is why most carry off duty.....just because it is wdw does not make it immune to this..my dh would not carry in a park but out shopping,to dinner or driving around Orlando....NO QUESTION

Thank you. The last 2 paragraphs sum it up I think, THANK YOU OFFICER

What I do think is rude is this:

For one thing, there is a huge difference between a career firefighter and an EMT. How many ambulance personnel did you see running into burning buildings? Now, yes, a career firefighter must also be trained as an EMT, but making light of the danger a FF faces in his/her career is downright rude. BTW, not everyone loves Firefighters

I'm sorry if my post offended you and don't see where I made light of what professional firefighters or even volunteer firefighters do but if you took it that way it was not intended. I have nothing but respect for fire professionals and over the years have worked with many of them in various positions.

I have seen both EMS workers and Police Officers enter burning buildings to save lives much as I have seen EMS workers and Fire Professionals put their lives in jeopardy to attempt to help someone else.

In the end I public safety is a brotherhood that all of its members belong to with the goal being to keep the public safe. We may joke around amongst each other but in the end it is a large family.

If I did offend you please accept my sincere appology the humor I meant for that post to have obviously did not translate well in the cyberverse.

No apologies necessary - I was just grumpy and shouldn't have posted that.

pdmedic, no need to apologize! Everyone knows that firefighters and police officers all have one thing in common....they both really wanted to be firefighters! LOL!!!! Being an officer, I work along side firefighters at different scenes all the time. There is absolutely a mutual respect between both agencies and a mutual need to support eachother. This thread is really a microcosm of our country. Some very different opinions and views....very interesting!!!

I actually never compared firefighters to police.

I did apologize to the officer for my comment. I should also state that I am not a firefighter

I am not in law enforcement but I have plenty of friends who are, and plenty of friends who are EMTs and firefighters as well, and I respect the work they do tremendously. I have found this thread to be one of the most interesting and informative threads I have read on these boards in a long time. It is a nice break from all the "refillable mug question" threads and I have found the information to be very pertinent. Thanks PDMedic, keep up the good work and enjoy your vacation.

I think (from a legal perspective) that Disney's policy of not allowing officer's to carry (or anyone for that matter, except their own on duty officers) is a solid one. A Disney employee is not in any position to determine the legitimacy of someone who presents themselves to the employee with the claim that he or she is lawfully carrying. While we would hope that only the "good guys" would bring their weapons, there's every likelihood that some of the "bad guys" would use a relaxed standard as a means to slip through the cracks by posing as legit carriers.

I'm sure that Disney (and ALL of us) are grateful to know that there are "off duty" law enforcement around us as we vacation (although are any of you really ever "off duty"?). I for one would feel relatively safe knowing legit officers were able to carry, but I'd be REALLY nervous that their ability to carry would make it possible for criminals and malcontents to sneak through with weapons and bad intentions.

Thanks for your service and dedication to everyone on this thread who is involved in Social Welfare. We need you all so much!

peytonsmomie...Very well said!

Living in a big city and attending amusement parks, sporting events, concerts, etc...where officers are not allowed to carry weapons, I often wish that I could. Many of these events are not necessarily family events and therefore attract both good and bad elements. I can't tell you how many times I have been with my wife and children and been very glad that I was armed.

That being said, I completely agree that Disney police or any other police would not initially know the good guys from the bad guys. So policies like this are ultimately good.

To all "MOS" I would say you are always on duty as far as caring your service weapon I for one don't have a problem with that but I would play it safe by living it at home . I know that most of you don't leave home with out it . with this said to avoid the aggregation of worrying about the gun and Disney’s policies it pleases leave it at home .

As always have a safe tour and thanks for the backing!

While I can't say I'll leave my weapon at home, it will be secured per Disney Policy since I have absolutely no problem with their request. After all the only thing I plan on "taking shots" with while on vacation is my camera. :)

Your posts have highlighted exactly the type of law enforcement attitudes that I love to see when I interface with LE for my work. Humble, accepting, honorable, and fair. I hope your vacation is incredible, safe and joyful. I also hope that when I go in April the parks are full of officers like you, enjoying their time with their families, but keeping a weather eye out for the rest of us.

You're so very appreciated!

LEO Wife and Disney Family Here, Hubby has been in LE for 10 Years and we have been going to WDW together since then......He has always carried an Off Duty Weapon, Everywhere we travel, not just WDW, He was even at WDW for a LEO COnvention at the Coronado, Imagine Hundreds of LEO's at WDW.....Disney has their Policies, and all the Officers We know Have no problem adhereing to Disney's policies......Its just a way of life for us and being responsible is being informed, We jjust called Disney and they told us thier firearms policy........We know lots and I mean lots of LEO families, and I dont know f one family who dosnet travel without their offduty weapon......

Interesting thread and information. My DH is also a LEO. And thats all I am gonna say too!

FYI room safe not large enough. SIL an FBI agent who is required to carry his weapon at all times. Weapon would not fit in room safe.

just curious as to what safe it would not fit into? we have never had a problem with it not fitting?:confused3

You may want to rethink using the in-room safe. There was at least one report of a guest having their valuables removed from the in-room safe while they were out of the room.

We are a police/fire/EMS household. My husband is an officer, vol. fireman and paramedic. I too am a firefighter/paramedic. My husband considers his weapon as part of him. We never go ANYWHERE without it - Target, Piggly-Wiggly, church, and WDW. He completes the proper paperwork so that he can fly with his weapon and we are escorted to the plane and board before anyone else. The airline approves (encourages) officers (at least in his department) on duty and off duty to bring their weapon on board with them for extra security because the air marshalls cannot be on all flights.

As any officer (fireman or paramedic) or officer's family knows there is no "off duty" time - ever. An officer is expected to react to certain situations even if they are at WDW.
