Any other police officers who have stayed at Disney?

That is a disrespectful statement. Yes, there were many different people who went in to help, but there were 600+ firefighters who ran into those buildings. Sadly, 343 of those brave men and woman lost their lives in order to save many. I mean no disrespect to the others who went in ,but no one should ever try to downplay the heroism of those men and woman. I don't say this because my husband is a firefighter, but as someone who worked in WTC.

Not trying to be Disrespectful and I don't believe I was , my point is that not only firefighters ran into that buidling there were LEO as well and in many cases they have a much more dangerous job. Not many people like police officers because they have to inforce the laws and we all know that we are not a nation who takes responsibilty for our actions. Some people feel that it is everyone elses fault!!!

When you look at Disney from a criminal's view point it's a great target since you have a bunch of tourists with fairly large amounts of money for souvenirs and food who you know are unarmed and unfamiliar with the area. While there is security most of it appears unarmed with the exception of some on-duty officers.

I disagree!!! I think that most people today, don't carry cash, they carry debit cards, credit cards, etc! I think most people that stay at a Disney resort, don't carry cash at all, they carry the "key to the world" card. Also, Disney has so many under cover security people. I just don't understand the need to carry a gun on vacation. Quite frankly, it scares me! Why can't you let the law enforcement that are assigned to that territory do the job and you take your vacation?? I'm a nurse...but I don't carry my stethescope everwhere I go, especially on vacation!

Wow....just read through this thread and see another nurse who said the same thing. I guess I am not the only one that feels this way.

Just went back and read all the posts. I just love how it is either an egotistical thing or its about being macho on why I would want to carry a weapon while on vacation. The main reason I took my weapon is that we drive to disney and have to make stops along the way. And unlike Disney, you really don't know what the area may be like when you pull of the interstate or into that rest area at 9 at night. I have never carried or even thought of carrying inside the parks until recently. I generally leave it in the room, in the safe. For the poster who refered to the key to the world card, we use the key to the world card and I carry cash also. This last time, I carried 300 in cash in one day to buy souvenirs with.
Most of the Disney Security that I have seen have always been unarmed security. I guess the sheep really don't like the idea of that pesky dog always following them everywhere they go, trying to keep them from straying away, that is, until the wolf shows up. Then the sheep love that sheep dog. Has anyone heard of Mumbai India??? If you think that something like that couldn't happen here you might want to get your head out of the sand and take a look at the world you live in today. Terrorist’s attacks always look for large number of casualties or injured. You generally find large number of people in public places. I guess WDW isn't a public place and it doesn't have large number of people there either, huh??? Would you rather a officer carry a weapon concealed that you wouldn't even know was there and be able to respond to something like that or would you rather him just call 911 and wait a few minutes for the cavalry to show up??? I'm going to carry on vacation and hopefully stop that wolf if he shows up and tries to hurt me, my family, or anybody else!!!

Yup..that's why I say nobody likes a cop until they need one!;) Stay safe!

okay, if disney does not check people physically --- frisk them --- or have them walk thru a metal detector --- then doesn't it worry you more about those that ARE NOT police officers that can be carrying a gun into WDW???

gosh forbid this happened and some deranged person went into the park and let loose ... wouldn't you want the disney security, who may or may not be armed, to have all the help they could get???

my husband is a police officer at all times ... if we were in a grocery store, at the mall or even at a disney park if the need were to arise he would have no hesitation to pull his weapon and use it accordingly ---

like another nurse said in the thread ... if you were to walk by someone who fell on the ground in cardiac arrest, would you stop and help that person??? would you give CPR??? or would you just keep on walking by since your on vacation??? i would like to think that you would do all you can to help out...you would use your skills as a nurse, you would do what you are trained to do...

the same goes for a police officer --- if they need to serve and protect the public they do that at all times ... regardless of what city or state they are in...it just so happens that a gun is part of their job...

if you were sitting in a restaraunt and someone walked in and started shooting up the place and an off duty police officer was sitting next to you would you want him or her to try to protect you and the others??? or would you tell him or her "oh please don't help, let's just wait until the local authorities arrive"...

I'm with you on that. If I drive to WDW, I will be packing on the ride.

I don't feel the need to carry while at WDW. I think that it would be uncomfortable on rides.

For all of those who dont FEEL the need to carry and Off Duty weapon, Just watch the Orlando Local News......Between the gangs and Strong Armed Robberies, its scary and i wont go into Orlando with out my Hubby carrying his Off Duty Weapon with him, Have you all not heard of the Tourist being held up in the Parking lot of DownTown Disney by gunpoint then taken to an ATM and forced to withdraw all their money....It Happens in DISNEY, Orlando's Crime Rate is HIGH..........In and around the Area.....Be Careful and Be Vigilant....Chose whatever means makes you feel safe, Bring You Off Duty Weapons if need be. My LEO Hubby Will, Just because its the Happiest Place on Earth doesnt mean its the Safest....

Ive been a LEO for 15+ years. I have carried "off duty" for....15+ years. I have been fortunate enough to only have had to drive to WDW once, we normally fly so this isnt much of a problem for me.

But I 100% understand where the OP is coming from. It is best to know what your options are up front so no one "freaks" out when you ask them where can you store your firearm.

I never even considered carrying in the parks. I know it would fall out on RnR or ToT!!!!!! I guess that would add to the terror.....:rotfl:

And to everyone who is thanking all of us for what we do....I say THANK YOU right back. Getting a thank you from people who really mean it makes my day. Way back when I started, my mom (another LEO wife) told me that when we get called to someone's house, we only get to see them at their worst. No one ever calls to say "im having a great day, come on by!!"

I saw where someone posted that there was a LEO convention at Coronado Springs.....now theres a convention worth going to!!!!

Stay safe my fellow brothers and sisters!!! See you at WDW!!!

I'm just quoting you because if not I'd be typing the exact same thing. I wonder if I can get my department to approve training money to go to the convention at Coronado Springs.

Also I don't think those not in the "business" understand the joking between the different services in public safety. You will find that Police / Fire / and EMS personnel will joke around with each other a lot and there is a lot of boasting about which service is best. However we are all like family in that it is okay for us to joke with each other but when any one else starts doing it we all come to each others aid it's a lot like brothers and sisters. I have nothing but respect for those in the Fire and EMS services that being said I'll harass them when I can and expect the same. We all go to the same calls and see things that others don't want to see and deal with what others don't want to do. Like was said above no one calls 911 and says I'm having a great day why don't you come over for some BBQ.

Just an FYI, the bad guys are always under cover! You could be standing next to one anywhere. You thinking what a great day you are having on vaction and they are thinking how to rip you off.

Maybe we could have a LEO/FD/EMS day at WDW. Can you only imagine what "war stories" would be told while waiting in line? That would be fun.

Ok...after reading all opinions, I realize, or shall I say I understand better, that most off duty LEO's are carrying. I just don't know how I feel about it! I have mixed feelings. The whole gun thing just scares the heck out of me. I have seen what they can do. I am not in denial and am well aware that terrorists could strike at any time, at any place. I know we live in a world filled with all kinds of crazy people. It is a harsh reality. I appreciate that an off duty officer would be willing to protect me, if need be, in a dangerous situation. Unfortunately, I have also seen many officers who believe they are above the law and are on huge power trips. I am absolutely not accusing you of being this way at all, please don't take it the wrong way. I am sure, in your career, you have seen this too! I do appreciate that you want to protect your family. My family means the world to me and I would also do anything in my power to protect them. It is just sad that we live in a world where we have to carry weapons, even on vacation. Maybe, the training/education that LEO's receive, teaches you to always be on the defense and that everyone is the potential criminal??? As a nurse, I don't ever plan to go out and save a life when I am not working. Of course if someone dropped in front of me in cardiac arrest, I would be the first one to step up and help, and actually have many times! I guess our training is different, and has to be. LEO's are absolutely putting there lives at risk when answering any calls and I think must be taught to not trust anyone. I wasn't trying to insult or offend you and sincerely apologize if I did. I just hate the thought of people carrying concealed weapons, especially at the "happiest place on earth"!

I completely agree with this statement, and I would like to add something else..... For those who said they don't bring a stethescope everywhere they go......I think that is a little different than a LEO carrying a weapon. You don't need a stethescope to perform CPR and save someone's life. However LOE might need a weapon to stop someone who is trying to hurt or kill others. So I don't think it's fair to compare a stethescope to LEO's weapon!
And like the OP said, he just wanted to know the policy, he is carrying his weapon mainly for the drive down.....alot can happen during the drive down!
My hubby is a LEO and he carries his weapon on vacation and any other time, except when we fly somewhere!

Here is a little reality check. Most people dont see what LEO's see on a daily basies and have blinders on to the world and have no clue what really goes on. With that said LEO's know at any time and any where even at the most magical place on earth the need for a weapon to defend there family might be needed. For those who rely on police or security to protect them you are oblivious to think we can be every where at once. The first line of defense is your self.

My husband is a police officer and he carries his weapon with him everywhere. I think that we should be applauding the posted question instead of giving him grief. He is TRYING to be responsible. I think it is a safe bet that there are lots of other weapons that are not being properly housed in Disney. I think you would be surprised to hear the stats. He is also very right about the criminal aspect in vacation spots, people are distracted, carrying cash, unfamiliar with the area and often drinking. Makes them easy targets.

I believe he said that the reason he is carrying his weapon is because he is driving to Disney. Again, I can totally relate to that. Orlando is a tough area, when I was there a few years ago my hotel was lit up like a christmas tree by a police helicopter looking for a suspect. :scared: Very nice start to my vacation (granted it was OFF Disney property) the next night we moved into our room ON Disney and never had a problem.

Be safe and Bless all brave enough to wear a uniform! :cheer2:

Many people live in their own bubble and have no grasp on the scary reality the US/world holds. They may hear it on the news, but until you've witnessed it you really don't know how bad it really is. My DH is retired military and now in LE. We live in one of those picture perfect counties where people don't think bad things happen...but every day he tells me things that would knock your socks off that people just don't "hear" about.

We NEED to have the good guys looking out for us regardless of whether they crossed their city/county/state line into Disney! Everyone wants to be safe, but then some people get upset when they hear about the details whether it's law enforcement, military, etc.

As others have posted, I completely agree that LE is more than just a job...it's a commitment to keep us safe and I appreciate the fact that many of the LE on the boards are exhibiting their commitment to the public by carrying even on vacation (although I completely respect those LE that choose not to). It's not about being egotistical (even though I did date a big-headed cop once, but that's another story....) :rotfl:
