Any other moms disappointed in Miley??

We are major Hannah Montana fans~we know all the shows by heart like I am sure many of you do as well.

As a parent, I find myself a little disappointed by this photo and the low cut dress that she wore at the country music awards. What bothers me the most about this situation is that her family has made it a point to come out and say that they are keeping her grounded, etc. With that in mind, this does not make sense to me. It seems to me like knowing the intense pressure that the media is going to put on her that they would avoid even the appearance of anything like this.

when is everybody going to wake up and smell the billy ray cyrus is just using his daughter to be back in the spot light!!! he was just a one hit wonder and nothing more come on he even has to play her dad on the show just a reason to be in the spot light. he even took pictures w/ her during the v.f. shoot!! i just want to know why he never talks about his other kids his daughter is just his golden ticket to hollywood and nothing more!!!

Ok well, I believe that the picture that was taken of Miley was somewhat racey Yes. But I'm sorry I don't feel it is any different than people that let there children go out in public with halter style shirts on that are VERY low cut in the back. And frankly I have seen some of these outfits on this board. I really don't want to open a can of worms with this and maybe I should keep my opinions to myself because I love being able to come to this board. This shot was done by the world famous Annie Lebowitz, I myself would have probably not said no either. Granted she is 15 and I am 30 and a mom of a 3 year old. I believe it was the red lipstick and the hair that really made this picture provocative if you want to call it that. Some people look at it as Art and some as trash. It is all a perception that the media has portrayed. If this "story" would have never been "broken" and never made it to the television media, how many of you would have even known that this picture even existed? The girl had jeans on and was partially wrapped in a sheet. So if she had posed laying on the beach in a bikini, red lipstick and tosseled hair, would you all feel the same. I personally think it is a beautiful black and white. And to me shows some innocence in the picture. But then that is me and just my opinion, so please don't rage on me. I

hmm I am a little torn when it comes to the vanity fair photos. They are WAY to racy for someone who is a rols model for little girls.. I know its a big pedastal to put a 15 year old on though. Thats the thing about pedastals.. the higher they go, the farther they have to fall. YIKES. How scary that free fall must be feeling to one so young!

I certainly dont want my girls to see them, BUT they are pretty artsy photo's... not as blatently sexy as I first thought when I went to really LOOK at them.

I was reminded of Annette Funnichello. (spelling? yikes!) And her bathing suit issues. Walt Disney was REALLY fussy about nudity. He HATED to see women exposed. IN fact he asked Annette (who was a mousketeer) not to expose her navel in her beach movies.. and she didnt for some time.. eventually caving to pressure.. but she struggled with it. All because of respect for Walt...makes me wonder what he'd think of Ms Cyrus?

Yes Miley is 15.. and I try to think of myself at 15. I likely would have posted something like she did online.. and then my parents would have discovered it, kicked my butt and that woudla been the end of it.. to bad it cant be for her. Im SURE her parents arent happy about the internet photos.

i just saw on the news about Miley posing for "artsy" photos with Vanity Fair--I'm quite disappointed in her choice to do this kind of thing. And in her parents' choice to allow it. My daughter is 6 and we have been doing the Hannah thing for a long time--went to the concert, watch the show, have the dolls, clothes etc..

But we won't be having the Hannah birthday party we had planned or redecorating her room in Hannah now!!

Anybody have any thoughts/opinions??

I think she is only apologizing because of all the uproar. Who new a shoulder could cause so much press. Any way she apologized. Cancelling a kid's birthday party and room decorations b/c of a photo that she admits was a mistake I think is over the top. Who new that being in the public eye means that you had to be perfect.

If we want to talk about growing up to fast and inappropriate I also have to say that I think it grows children up too fast when they are 6 years old and watching Hannah Montana and High School Musical. I think exposing a first grader to the world of essentially a freshman in high school (Hannah is currently a freshman in high school I believe) causes kids to grow up TOO fast. IMHO

I say, no problem Miley, we all make mistakes. Keep making a cute show and singing your songs. Lots of girls are enjoying your music and show.

I'm not disappointed in Miley, I am disappointed in her parents. I for one do not place much importance on what she has done. I try very hard to discourage my daughter from idolizing any celebrity. She knows Miley plays a character and it's all acting.

I think it's sad that parents let their toddlers and elementary school kids idolize a teenager - 3-10 year olds should not be trying to be a 15 year old. When my daughter was in elementary school it was Britney Spears, and my 8 yr old was not allowed to have her CDs, or anything at all to do with her, because my 8 yr old was too little to try to be a teenager. Why are parents letting their little kids (like the OP's 6 yr old) watch TV shows for tweens? Just because it is Disney doesn't mean it's for preschoolers, for goodness sakes!

You bring up a good point The Hannah Montana character is a high school freshman, isn't she? I know the shows (and even her songs) deal with her and her friends crushes, dating, etc. I don't get why little kids would be watching it. I have daughters that are 5 years apart, so I know sometimes the little ones want to see what the older ones watch, but parents can say no. Also, if your kids are that little, I doubt they will see the photos in Vanity Fair. My 11 year old saw them on our computer home page, in the news section. But she is old enough to understand about bad decisions.

I also agree with you about the Britney Spears thing! I remember one of my dd's friends going to see her in concert at 5 years old! Inappropriate, IMO!

I think the photo is not appropriate for a 15 year old and someone dropped the ball however, I'm not going to condemn Miley. She made a mistake and I think she knows that now.

Supposidly, Miley's parents left right before those photos were taken and there is video to prove it. Also, supposidly Disney was not there being represented. But I can't believe there was no adult there with Miley after the parents left. No one to say maybe this is a bad idea?

I also know that Annie Leibovitz is a very famous photographer. Maybe Miley was in awe of her. Maybe she didn't feel it was her place to question Annie? I mean Annie was trying to get the Queen to take her crown off! But, the Queen has a few years on Miley and said "NO!" even though Annie was persistant, the Queen won that arguement.

Anyway, I am disappointed in the photos but not in Miley. I'm not sure who's to blame (maybe her parents, Annie and Disney??) but I'm sure we haven't heard the last of this story in the days to come.

I guess I may be in the minority but I didn't really see anything wrong with the pictures in Vanity Fair. They weren't particularily sexy. I thought they showed vulnerability. The one of her and her dad seemed completely innocent.

Also, I am of the opinion that if you raise your children well, society can't corrupt them anyway. I think people put too much blame on the media and celebrities influencing their children. This is just my opinion.

I totally agree, I think this whole thing was blown up by the media and at the end of the day parents have to be a little more realistic about the roles celebrities play in their childrens life. I am a parent of a teenage daughter and I thought that there was nothing wrong with the pictures in vanity fair or the ones on the internet, I know for a fact what Miley did is what most girls 15 do, I don't think she should have put them on the internet but she's 15 she more than likely wasn't thinking when she did. Wake up people Hannah Montanah is not a real person she didn't ask to be a role model the Media and parents made her one. And she can't play Hannah Montanah for ever she has to grow up if she wants to have a career after disney, thats the problem with child actors, no one wants them to grow up into adulthood and then they turn to drugs and alchol because they deal with the fact they have no career after they aged out of disney.

Exactly.....I wish every female that is freaking out over this would just take a minute and try to remember being 15. (and if anyone says they would have known better...they are lying to themselves...we all want to be "older" at that age)

She's not an adult and she shouldn't be expected to make adult decisions. I remember some of the "stupid" things I did at 15 and ya know what...this seems perfectly normal to me.

Not dissappointed in Miley, i am dissappointed in her parents for the lack of supervision. How can a 15 year old realize that this may be taken out of context? It is up to her parents to be there to make that decision. Kids make stupid mistakes. She is 15 and has alot of pressure. Oh how i wish i could take back some of them when i was 15. She is a product of our society. My daughters love her music and her show so i won't stop them from watching or listening. I monitor what they watch which is only Disney Channel so i know that they won't be seeing any inappropriate pictures on there. The only chance to hear about any of this is with their friends or on the school bus. I asked them this morning if they had heard anything about her new pictures and they both said no. I don't think it is harmful to my girls at this point. If this is the worst thing that she does then who cares. The news makes a bigger deal out of everything than it actually is.

I read that the pics were digital and that the family and Miley saw them on set but that they thought they were beautiful at that time.

To me, the photog was trying to capture exactly what she did in that picture: the look on Miley's face is actually quite innocent, yet she's naked under a bedsheet. It implies innocence meets sexuality. As Miley reaches 15, her image has gotten more sexy and she's nearing the crossroads that former teen stars before her have, where they fight to stay innnocent (a la Hilary Duff) or it all goes downhill (a la Britney or Lindsay). The photo would have been just as pretty if she'd been wearing innocent baby doll pyjamas, but there would have been no 'message' and this photog isn't the kind who just takes a pretty picture.

I will still let my dd like and listen to Miley. However, I never let her watch the show/DVDs. There's a lot of stuff in them that I don't want my dd emulating and, honestly, her second grade friends idolize Miley so much that they try to be just like her-clothes, make-up, boys, and all.

I respect that lots of people have many different opinions. So here's mine: I think everyone has done a few things they would love to "do over" in life and fortunately for us, those things are not in our face every day. Unfortunately for Miley, she has to respond to this. And has tastefully done a very adult thing and apologized. Instead of hammering her down, I think people should praise her for the life she has led as a 15 year old. I never hear of her taking drugs, drinking... partying around like Miss Lohan did at her age. There are far worse things that could happen. I think the media has completely sensationalized it and made it far worse than it needed to be. I agree, bad taste on Miley's/Miley's parent's part for doing the backless photo... but really, does your young daughter read Vanity Fair. I'm guessing no. So in all fairness, no one (except Vanity Fair readers) would even know about the picture if the media hadn't sensationalized this so much. They are really reaching here... they are looking for something negative to say about her.

Give her some credit... I mean she is dealing with very adult stuff every day and has to make decisions every minute of that day about how she is going to act, what she is going to say, what she is going to wear and these decisions affect her fans, their parents, the media, and what everyone has to say about her weeks after. I couldn't live under the microscope like she does.

I agree. I didn't find anything overly sexy about the pictures. It was just a beautiful shot of her looking very down to earth and pretty. I have 2 dd's that love Hannah Montana,and I don't see anything wrong with them watching her show.She's real life (compared to a cartoon) and since its Disney channel they don't have violence,mean words,or attitudes,so my kids get to see how other people in real life interact,and they know that the right and wrong that I'm teaching them is reflected in the real world.

Guess what people? Fifteen year olds aren't sexy, they're still kids. And it's nothing short of grossly exploitative to try to make them anything different. If someone's dad had taken that picture and posted it on the internet, he'd be in jail about now.

This is exactly what I was thinking. She's 15! Shame on everyone who actually let her do this, especialy her family.

There's a song by the Dishwalla called Pretty Babies and it talks about how unfortunately our society and media are increasingly romanticizing our children. Yuck, to me that's really inappropriate. Kids are kids adults are adults. Let's leave it at that.

Why do people feel they have the right to judge a famous person and their choices. You have no more right to force her to be the person you want her to be, than you do to force the kid next door.

If you don't like what/who she is becoming, don't expose your child to her!!!!
