I get migraines at least once a month for about a week long stretch. Havent found any meds (besides advil migraine) that helps them. I've tried many prescribed meds but some have given me this horrible side effect making me feel like I cant breath , so I stopped trying to find one. Anyone else get them. My biggest fear will be I'll get one on our trip, I tend to get them when i get excited.

I get migraines A LOT. Rarely would a day go without some kind of migraine symptom. I would have about 4 month that would land me in bed with icepacks and ear plugs.

I finally saw a doctor at last month at Duke who put me on an herbal supplement called Migrasolve. It is made from butter burr root. It is basically a huge dose of B2. I can not believe the difference it has made. Sure I still got a headache at "that time" but I have not had the blow out kind that have me heaving in the toilet at 3am.

Disclaimer: I do not sell this stuff or am I no way affiliated with the company that makes it;) I just might be something for you to look into.

I first found it at Whole Foods but I have since ordered online from a herbal supplier. I think it was iherb.

:thumbsup2

Have you tried talking with your OB/GYN? They put me on the estrogen patch a few days before my cycle and it helped. I still got headaches but I could function.

However, I had to get off the patch because I am allergic to the glue on them. Now, I am on Frova. It does not keep them away, but does shorten the length of them.

The other suggestion is a chiroprator. When my insurance covered it, I went on a regular basis and it helped a bunch.

Good Luck at WDW. I hope this helps.

Oh, he also told me that a lot of migraine sufferers have a magnesium deficiency. Maybe you could try taking a supplement? The type you want is the water soluable kind. I believe it is Maganese Oxide. Your body will eliminate what it doesn't need rather than it building up.

Again...check it out! Most natural health food stores (not GNC) employ people who are knowledgable and do your own research!

My husband suffers from Migraines almost every other day. If he doesn't have his pain killer he will be at the emergency room. He has seen all kinds of neurologist and have taken dozens of scans but nothing yet. Doctors just keep giving him different meds to try. For pain he uses Fiorcet with Codeine. This is one of the reasons that when we are on vacation we definitely stop mid day and head back to the hotel. So the kids can relax at the pool and my husband can relax either out of the sun or to lay down for a bit. Good Luck

I'm gonna look into this, definitly an alternative to the presciption meds (considering i'm allergic to something in them) I'll have to look at my health food store, Is it hard to choke down? Is it a pill or a drink? expensive?
I've tried the fiiorect w/ codiene did nothing for me , also tried imetrex, zomig and a few others, I take advil migraine in huge doses because something in it works for me temporarily (keeping me from throwing all day) I'm sure its not a good idea to take so much of it but w/ two kids 2 and 5 whats the alternative ya know?

It is a little capsule. It kind of looks like a vitamin E or a Co-Q10 capsule. In the research I found there were no known side effects or interactions with other medication. I found one resource that said it could possibly cause liver damage but it was doubtful. Let me know if you find anything else!!

I know what you mean about the meds. I have a weak stomache so just about everything makes me sick. I am not a pill popper!

Oh, I bought it at Whole Foods for about $35. I found it online for $13!

Previous hormonal monthly migraine sufferer here. I inherited mine from my mom and grandma. I do not get them so bad that I am vomiting for 30 hours, but I do get them bad enough where everything stops. I too, used to take prescriptions of all kinds, and eventually they did not work anymore. So now at the first sign I take Advil Migraine as well.

That being said, I had to go off the birth control pill as that made it worse. I was scared to try the depo shot because of my migraines and I am happy to say that since I have been on it, I rarely get a full blown migraine. :cool1: :rotfl2: I love the depo, wish I would have known about it years ago. Something to do with the estrogen or something, I'm not sure but it has made a HUGE difference.

I'm on the nuva ring and i've heard that is supposed to help with them. I havent noticed much of a difference with it.

I take a blood pressure pill to keep mine away. It helps a lot, the only side effect is that it really takes my BP down since it is low to begin with. I see a new doctor soon, so we'll see if she agrees with me continuing this med- but it has taken them completely away. Ugh, they were horrible!:headache:

Its nice to know there are people who understand how horrible it is. DH doesnt really get it. I go from aura to puking in a half hour if I dont get it under control. It wasnt always like this, I had them in puberty but then they left till I had my first son , then came back strong till I had my daughter then they arent as bad but stick around for a week straight. The only advice my ob/gyn said was to use bc that was non hormonal.. and well that is NOT an option for me. I'd have no migraines but children running everywhere!! I'm going to check out the health food store though..

I am a HUGE migraine sufferer.:headache: I have been to all kinds of doctors and had all kinds of tests. I've also tried many different things. Currently I take Axert when I get a migraine. I used to take Topamax for prevention. It helped some, but not as much as I'd like. I tried something else for prevention, but I can't remember the correct name - it started with a G. My doctor has written me a Rx for Imitrex because my insurance company would let me have 9 per month. Axert really works, but I only get 6 per month and I need so much more than that. I end up taking far too many Excedrin Migraines.
I have tried natural remedies as well. I went for several months taking Magnesium and Fever Few supplements. I had to stop taking them after a blunt head trauma (run-in with a cotton candy machine- don't ask :lmao: ).
I'm interested in the butter burr root.

Have you tried Relpax? I suffered for 2 weeks with a migraine a few years ago. I went to 2 ERs, and took several pain killers. Called my OBGYN and he called in Relpax for me. It worked. I asked him later why the ER did not give it to me and he told me it was due to the cost. I was shocked! I suffer from migraines but have not had another to last that long. It also allows me to function instead of knocking me out. I wanted to ask also if there are any emotional triggers. I have had people in therapy who have suffered for years and when they finally process what is going on they go away or lessen drastically. Just a thought. I sympathize. I hate getting them while trying to be mommy, wife, boss, etc. Very frustrating to me and I am sure to you!

I used to take Relpax too! It was very expensive so I stopped asking for refills. If I feel a headache come on I just take a couple of Motrin to head it off! That is rare for me now thank goodness!

I've had migraines since childhood...they are definitely hormonal and got worse during pregnancy. A neurologist put me on inderal (a heart medication) for a brief period which seemed to help.

Seriously the only thing that has helped when I feel one coming on (I get vision distrubences) is to take a bunch of advil (dr said could take up to 4/5 at a time) and drink a coca cola (not diet). Not sure why, but the combo works for me.

It was hell during my pregnancies..tylenol did nothing.

I get two a month. One mid-cycle when I'm (probably) ovulating and once during my "time". I can literally predict the DAYS I'm going to have them, which I guess is good. If something happens and I'm late starting a new pack of pills on Sunday, I'll have one until I do.

My ob/gyn prescribed a patch: Vivelle. She also prescribed Imitrex. I tried the patch first, it didn't work and I broke down and bought my $6/pill Imitrex. It works wonders. Within 30 minutes, I'm pain free. It upsets my stomach a little at first and makes me a feel a little woozy, but I'll take that minor discomfort over a migraine any day.

I had them my first trimester of my pregnancy but the last 6 months were headache-free bliss. I didn't begin them again until I quit nursing and my cycle went back to "normal."

Probably TMI, but I'm sure we're all glad to know we're not alone!

I just wanted to say I feel your pain! Literally. It is so hard as a mommy (or daddy) to have a migraine. Imitrex never worked for me. Recently I tried Maxalt (it just dissolves in your mouth) and it does take the edge off for me.

I'm sure you know how foods, smells, dehydration, etc. can trigger migraines so make sure to watch those. I do believe hormones play a huge part. I am on HRT and if I miss a dose by even a few hours a migraine starts.

Sending hugs for pain free parents! :grouphug:

i get them that run the gammut-the worst resulted in so many e/r trips for an i.v. of pain meds that my doctor and insurance company finaly decided to let me have morphene based supposotories:scared: for home use (dh and i had to get allot of instruction on appropriate usage and when to reccognize that it was time despite using them to head to the e/r). because i have different types i have a home pharmacy with about 4 different perscriptions to use depending on the severity.

when we vacation i take my meds along, but i also take an ice bag and make sure we get a mini fridge in the room so i can have a supply of : diet coke, water and cranberry juice. since caffeine is a major componant in most migrane meds the diet coke can help stave off one of the lesser ones. hydration seems to help as well (and i'm not good with heat/humidity to begin with) so i push water when i travel. the cranberry juice is actualy something i read about and i've found that if i feel a migrane coming on it can help decrease the symptoms. dh found me a little keychain at a sporting goods store that is a tiny dive tank, it opens and i can store a few pills in it so i take that along with us daily (don't want to feel one coming on and have to run back to the hotel).

the last item i ALWAYS take along with us is purely in case a migrane hits full bore. the item is a pair of ear protectors (like hunters wear-less than $15 at walmart). when i get a bad migrane i need major quiet-which is not achieved in a hotel room with kids:banana:  with the ear protectors i can shut out the sound for the most part, and if need be-hunker down in a warm bath with the lights out.

I take imitrex and they work wonders for me. If I can catch it right before a bad one hits an Advil Migranie will help and it may just be a headache and not a migraine. I was really lucky and when I was pregnant with both my kids I didn't get migrains. I'm on the depo shot now and haven't had one since I went on it. I've had some bad headaches but not migraines.
