In Ed's opinion (and it's worth what you paid for it which is zero):
It won't happen. The current cabins sleep 6 people. You could try to make the argument that the current cabins have lived out their useful IRS life and should be replaced.
But if you go bigger than 6 you're talking DVC-like space. The Poly is starting a retro to turn part of it into DVC. The Fort could be next somewhere between Wilderness Lodge and Pioneer Hall. I could see bigger-than-6-people accomodations as a DVC property in the in-between space. But given the layout the current cabins prolly won't change.
1) Every now and then, guests will ask us about this.
2) The answer is a resounding, "No.".
3) No one, including me, can see a benefit/advantage to a two-bedroom unit.
4) Cabins still have a long useful life, with little maintenance.
5) And, Disney DOES NOT build anything without a clear profit plan.
. . . changing cabins to 2-bedrooms has a zero upside for WDW
. . . the current occupancy rate is very high, so little occupancy increase
. . . the priced are already high, so not much chance for more per-night billing
. . . cabins already handle six people, so not much need for larger families *
* If larger families want WDW, they are steered to multiple rooms at other
resorts or urged to investigate DVC purchases. Some think a 2-bedroom unit
would grant more privacy, but who ever thought campground and privacy could
be included in the same sentence?
If they would start to replace any cabins, which I do not see happening as they are usually fairly rented and cost Disney nothing now, they could replace them with the newer ones that have the lofts in them, that would increase the sleeping amounts.
That's what I see at places with rentals like the cabins doing now when they upgrade.
I read one post here which referenced it, thumpersfriend, so you didn't imagine it.
The cabins are essentially "single wide" mobile homes which are pretty modular and easy to place. What would they do (I wonder), go to a "double wide" for 2-BR cabins? I could see them putting a half dozen 2 BR around the loops but not wholesale replacing ALL of them.
As they are the cabins are classed as a "Moderate Resort" but they go for $500 in 2014 per night around Christmas which must put it in the super-moderate class. A 2 BR would probably be priced around that of a suite at the Poly or Contemp. That might be outside a Moderate Resort concept.
