Any members of the old Make up Clique still around?

Hi everyone!

College student here looking for a relatively cheap monthly makeup box subscription. I'll take any recommendations. I love experimenting with new lip glosses/lip sticks and nail colors, if that helps narrow things down since I know there are quite a few makeup boxes floating around out there.

My opinion is avoid ipsy, what was once a great value now isn't. To many unknown brands that aren't that great. I've heard fairly decent about birch box.

Birchbox is pretty good! A lot of perfume samples and a lot of Benefit samples, they tailor it a little to your preferences, and for $10/month (I think).

I've heard that about birch. Ipsy supposedly does but they lie they don't. I don't know how much of their stuff I got that ended up in a bag because I wouldn't use it.

Anyone shop at Misikko.com? I went to look for the website and cannot find it anymore.
A one-page Google search suggests they may be out of business. There are some complaints about them selling fake Hana merchandise. That's disappointing. I bought 2 of their HanaAir blow dryers nearly 4 years ago. Mine is still going strong; and when my daughter's quit working just under two years (still under warranty) they sent an entirely new boxed package that was a gift set exactly like the original one purchased. That one is still working well afaik. We both have very long, thick hair and these dryers have held up well to the extensive sessions required for a complete blow dry. They also used to sell the Model In A Bottle setting spray, which I would buy multiples at a time for a discount; but since switching to Urban Decay All Nighter, Missiko has been off my radar. I didn't notice them not still being an active online store.

Also, has anyone heard of SK-II skin care? It is very expensive but I am a Bzz Agent and got a sample kit (worth 100) to try. I am really hoping that it is no good because I cannot afford 200-400 on a jar of skin cream. So far sadly, it does seem to help the lines in my neck. They sell it at Neiman Marcus and it has some sort of by product of sake in it.

I was at Neiman Marcus today as my DD wanted to get the Giorgio Armani Luminesse (I think) foundation. The lady there told me my face looked good as well as my make up (Bare Minerals) but thought I looked a little dry. She whipped this SK moisturizer out. I would only let her put in on my hand because EVERYTHING gives me hives. Oh my, that stuff was nice. $205 for a small jar. Nope, can't do it.

Wait a minute....people have mentioned SK moisturizer and I never made the connection! I got a FREE kit from bzzagent! It has a mask, moisturizer and some sort of liquid. I like the moisturizer but can only use it on my neck and marionette lines because I cannot put it on my face! The kit was worth over 100.00 because it was trial size but to buy full size it would be over 400.00. I do have a code for the 40.00 off 400 but that is a drop in the bucket if you ask me.

What happens if you put it on your face? My facial skin is so sensitive, I would not do it, but it did seem very mild (at least on my hand). I did notice a slight scent to it.

If anyone uses Neutrogena there's an excellent deal right now at Ulta.... Buy two, get one free plus spend $15 plus you get a free tote bag.

Has anyone had trouble with clumping with the Tarte mascara that's in the purple tube?

Has anyone tried the new Living Proof anti humidity spray? I am thinking about getting it...nothing helps basically because my frizz comes from sweat on my scalp NOT from the atmosphere but I am willing to try anything.

I do not put it on my face perse I put it on my neck, lines beside my mouth and around my eyes. I avoid the cheek area because I have rosacea.

I'm just recently into makeup and I'm so glad I found this thread! Since I want everything I've been spending way too much every month on new products. Maybe I need to slow down until Oct/Nov so I can buy some of those holiday sets that are coming out. Keep posting guys, cuz I'm learning so much!

Welcome aboard! I know sephora has some holiday sets that will have samples of different brands.

I'm still around too. :wave2:

I was at Sephora a couple weeks ago and I picked up a good hydrating moisturizer. After reading reviews on MakeupAlley.com in which quite a few people said after using it and the wrinkles literally disappeared, they realized their wrinkles were caused more by a lack of hydration and not using a good moisturizer. I headed right for a sample.

OMG! They were right! All this time, I thought because of various chronic illnesses, that I was just aging, and the after effects of illness had started to show on my face. My skin had begun to get a crepey texture too. :( But, I just simply needed to switch to a more HYDRATING moisturizer.

I followed the directions of one reviewer who posted that she reapplied it at first every few hours, as her skin seemed to drink it all in each time. After a couple days, my skin texture went from crepey and wrinkled to nice & plump now and the wrinkles are pretty much gone! I feel like I re-hydrated a raisin back into a grape! :woohoo: :lmao:

Now, I need a good face wash as I suppose that is stripping my skin of moisture too. My favorite one got discontinued a while ago. :(

I tried Cetaphil as it was supposed to be mild. My face felt really tight.
I can't stand the smell of Phisoderm. :snooty:
The Simple (brand) skincare cleanser did nothing. Too "simple" I guess. :p
I hate Dove soap as it seemed to leave a film on my face. :crazy2:
I tried ALL of Origins cleansers after my favorite of theirs, the Mint Wash, had been discontinued and all of the others were too drying. :upsidedow

I was going to try Philosophy's Purity Made Simple, which got great reviews. But some reviews say it has parabens which are supposed to be a bad thing, I guess. :confused3 Plus, it's really expensive.

I'd like something foamy, not creamy. But, I heard those tend to be more drying. :headache: And I'd like something that removes MAC foundation. Although, if there is a second thing that does that, I'm fine with that.

Any suggestions? :hyper:

I use the vitamin e cream wash from The Body Shop, in the winter it is like cleansing your skin with moisturizer. A little too much for me in the summer, but I will go back to it when fall arrives. You can get amazing sale prices there. I like their mineral cream base too, I apply it with a brush and it matches my skin really well and is shear, just evens me out and don't emphasize any eye wrinkles.

My favorite brand was also discontinued years ago. Then I went through the usual panda/raccoon eyes or flakes everywhere, as one tries to find a mascara that works. I also wanted one that was waterproof but comes off easily when I want it to come off. That's kind of the antithesis of waterproof mascara.

Several people here recommended TUBING mascara, specifically the Loreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes mascara. There are a few Loreal Double Extend mascaras, this is the one (below) in the red & white container with a wand enclosed at each end. Make sure the package says tubes.

You coat the lashes with the white wand. I think it is just wax. Before it hardens & dries, you coat the lashes with the dark color. This dries around the wax & lash into a a solid, long tube that doesn't flake or smear.

To wash off, wash with warm water which melts the wax and the tubes slide right off. The first time you wash your face and see all tubes in the bottom of the sink, it is scary & shocking. You think all your lashes have fallen off. :faint: Nope, it's just the tubes! After that you realize why your mascara will never flake, smudge or smear anymore. The tubes stay in one whole piece, even when they wash off. :thumbsup2 I even purposely wore it during a tearjerker movie, and they didn't fall off or raccoon. :thumbsup2

Some reviewers have stated tubing mascara is nice & long, but not thick enough. However, I have read that once the tubes are dry, some people go over the tubes with a coat of other brands of thicker waterproof mascara, This way, they get the wash-ability of the tubes sliding off easily when they wash them off, but have the thickness they desire from a different brand of mascara that is hard to remove.

This sounds awesome, I have never been able to wear mascara, because it gets all over my face. Until now I had pretty decent lashes, but the age and thyroid deficiency are getting to them. I had been considering extensions in the near future. I might try this before I got to that option.

I'll try and post a photo later of what Makeup Forever Smokey mascara looks like.

Maybe something we could do to help others out, is post what products we've tried and our opinions of them?

That's a good idea. (In fact, I haven't forgotten we talked about a review of the Too Faced eyeshadow primer; I have received it but haven't worn anything other than mascara this week!)

Top photo is a closeup of the mascara, no false lashes just natural.
Bottom left is all the makeup and bottom right is after the evening out at a concert.

I have combination skin and some breakouts right now along one side of my face near my jawline. The foundation covers it perfectly with the combination of the liquid and powder. With the face primer, I honestly need very little foundation or powder to use on my skin. The concealer you need very little of but the right color for it to work on your skin. The shadows I admit I don't do mine typical and I honestly avoid browns for the most part at all cost because of how I look with them on. The mascara is one of my top favorites, there is no clumping which I get with my tarte. The brow powder is actually eyeshadow so for anyone who struggles with finding the right shade. I combine the blush colors to offset them...the Candy Glow is very soft pink with a bit of shimmer and the Berry one is a bit of a brighter pink. The setting spray is my go to product with heat and humidity.

I will say one thing I have learned the trick with getting my look right is the type of brushes. I find the cheap brushes are good in a quick fix but they don't blend it as well or give the same appearance.

I'll answer any questions about any of the products if anyone has them.

I've read very little about cleansing oils. How does the OIL come off your face? I'd think you'd need something that would then be able to get the cleansing oil to rinse cleanly off your face without leaving a residue? :confused3

Cleansing oils are water soluble, so they emulsify and rinse off cleanly. I use the double cleansing method (cleansing oil followed by facial cleanser) and it takes off a full face plus sunscreen so easily. I used to use makeup remover, facial cleanser and toner and would still have traces of foundation left afterward, not to mention stripped feeling skin!

I've tried the Double Extend Mascara before, and found the white wand too goopy and clumpy. Does anyone have tips on how to use this, or another affordable (drugstore price range) tubing mascara?

Does anyone have recommendation for a good brush holder for traveling? I don't want to just throw my good brushes in a bag to go unless it's my only choice.
On my last trip I used this case from Amazon (hope the link works) http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CG1SVA2?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00
Anyway I think it's used either for a pen holder or cosmetic brush holder, it worked well and was inexpensive. Like fake leather, sturdy enough to stand up to traveling.
