Hi. I was wondering if anyone could maybe help me out. My dd has a math problem that she is having trouble with and I am a disaster in math-I can barely understand the question, lol. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction so I can help her. TIA. Here's the problem:

A tcicket agent at the airport kept track of the disguises used by tourists in the airport at Thanksgiving. He noticed that every eighth tourist was wearing sunglasses, every sixth one was wearing a blonde wig, every fifth one was carrying a camera, every third was hiding behind a copy of Turkeytalk magazine, and every twelth wore a flowered shirt.

How many tourists, out of the first 200 that the agent noticed, had everything(sunglasses, wig,a flowered shirt, a camera, and a copy of Turkeytalk)?

I read this and :confused3

you times all the probabilities together to get the probability of everything........beats me what that means but :confused3

I'm a visual learner, so I would probably write 1 -50 on a piece of paper and then put a symbol under each number corresponding to the item they have.

I would then count the # that have everything and times it by 4 to get how many out of 200.

That what I was going to say. Honestly though, it's more because I'm too freaking tired to think, as I'm only sort of a visual learner. ;)

Okay, I just went through it in my head quickly and this is a trick question, bc I don't think any of the first 200 customers would be wearing all the disguises.

It was bothering me and I had to figure it out.

The answer is 6 (I think). No. I'm wrong. 8x12x5 (ignore 6 and three because they 12 is evenly divisible by both) is 700 so no one was wearing each and every costume.

ETA: OK, I am wrong again. Imagine that the first customer was wearing everything. Then the answer might be 1. No?

On second thought, magicgirl is correct. It is the 120th person.

Looking at the question I believe the teacher wants them to make a chart. Make the chart and please tell us the answer!

Sorry I forgot to put my reasoning. I wrote down the 12 times table upto 17 x 12 = 204. 3 and 6 go into 12. I looked for any numbers ending in 5 or 0 Divisible by 5 and then I saw if ant were divisible by 8. I only got tourist 120.

This bugged me so I did work it out.

I checked out the least common multiples of 5, 8 and 12. I ignored the 3 and 4 since they worked with 12. The LCM is 120

It's been a while since I was in school but if my memory serves me right.

since 6 & 12 are divisible by 3 you cancel them out and then you multiply the remaining as they are not common numbers which would be

8 x 5 x 3

This is a classic "least common multiple" problem, which is the smallest number that a group of numbers will evenly divide into. To determine the LCM of a group of numbers, you break each number into its "prime factors", or product of prime numbers:

Sunglasses: 8 = 2x2x2
Wig: 6 = 2x3
Camera: 5 = 5
Magazine: 3 = 3
Shirt: 12 = 2x2x3

To determine the LCM, you take the "highest power" of each prime number and multiply them together. The highest power of 2 is from the Sunglasses number = 2x2x2. Numbers 3 and 5 are only to the 1st power. Thus the answer is:

(2x2x2) x 3 x 5 = 120. (The next tourist with everything would be the 240th, which is beyond 200 tourists.)

The answer is 1 (guest 120 is the only one that will be wearing all items)
120 is the only number from 1-200 that is divisible by 3, 5, 6, 8 and 12.

Noooo if tourists are wearing "disguises" you call security, as they are doing something bad! Call TSA!! So the answer would be NONE, as you are a good citizen, and on the lookout for something out of the ordinary! pirate:

I agree with Grumpy!

I would make a chart as well.

You can quick set up a chart/table in Word/Excel and get it done in a flash.
