I need to find a small present ($15 max) for a high school boy interested in camping. I was thinking a flashlight and some comic books but don't know if that is a good gift or not. Any other ideas would be great.

thanks, Jen.

thanks. The compass is a great idea but I think they have one already since they camp a lot.

Do you have an REI nearby? They have some great camping gear and stuff in all kinds of price ranges. They also have an awesome return policy, they'll let you return stuff even if you've already used it. So if you get him something and he tries it out and doesn't like it he can return it for an exchange or store credit.

head lamp, homemade smores kit (a metal roasting stick or two, chocolate bar, graham crackers and marshmallows), a pocket knife or multi-tool, small survival kit like this (especially if they also hike a lot) http://www.allcampinggear.com/site/1022013/product/8405 a water bottle with a carabiner like this to hook to his backpack. http://www.thermos.com/products/vacuum-insulated-22-oz-hydration-bottle.aspx If you wanted something novelty a book of ghost stories for telling around the campfire like perhaps this one. http://www.amazon.com/Through-Flash...al-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1324477689&sr=1-1-catcorr

DH loves these things called Figure 9s. They can be used to tighten up ropes, clip things together, etc.

He has them in a large variety of sizes and they come in handy when camping - putting up a tarp for rain, is our most recent use.

You can search on REI or Amazon for them.

Water bobble w/beer cozy to hold it (add a carbiner on so he can clip it to his belt)

Compass

Fishing stool

Cane pole

Pocket knife of multi-tool

Camping cookware (Mess kit)

Mini cooler

Head lamp (popular around here)

Fishing gear (tackle box + bobbers, etc)

Baseball cap with LED lights in the brim, LED headlight, magnesium fire starter, an smaller Leatherman/multi-tool -- just suggestions

I'd go with a life is good shirt.

It's hard to buy when it's something they do all the time. They already know their needs and what works for them. You could also ask at the Fort Community board.

I like the s'mores kit idea (I'd love one!). Flashlight and batteries, rope, tarps, a headlamp (SO handy!), bug spray, fire starters, matches, maybe one of the long lighters? I'm trying to think of "consumables" that get used up/worn out so he doesn't end up with duplicates of items he already has.

What about a gift card from Bass Pro shop or your local sporting goods store. Those places usually have a gret camping/outdoor section.

I'll second this idea - I love mine, and it is much better than a headlamp IMHO (which I also have but don't love nearly as much.)

I also like the idea of a gift card for Bass Pro, Cabela's, REI, EMS, etc.

Another idea might be small games like Pass the Pigs, Blisters, or even a deck of cards or two along with a card game book. It inevitably WILL rain on one of his camping trips ;)
