Any Good Sushi Place around Huntington Beach

We are going and would love to try a really good sushi place around the area. Any recommendations? We do have a car if we need to go further.

Does it have to be in Huntington Beach, or just Orange County?

We liked Tommy's Sushi in Tustin. It's in a nondescript strip mall, but the owners and chefs are from Japan. The prices are more than reasonable, although there might be a wait to get in.

We don't mind driving around to get there. I'll take a look at Tommy's Sushi. Thanks.

Here's the Yelp reviews of the place I recommended. I had the poke bowl.

It gets an overall 3-1/2 stars, but that's because a lot of people don't like the ambiance as well as people who didn't care for the service. It's a little bit of an odd place. Some say it looks kind of run down. I thought it was clean, although it could have used some interior sprucing.

One of the reasons it's popular despite all that is the quality of the fish and the large portion sizes. I'm not necessarily one to trump portions sizes (typically means overeating), but sushi isn't typically served in enough quantity for a decent meal. They provide excellent value and quality.

Can you be a bit more specific about what defines "good" sushi? Do you want authentic, traditional sushi? Westernized rolls? All you can eat? If you can give some more info, we can provide you with more suggestions. Orange County has sushi places to fit all kinds of preferences.

We prefer authentic traditional made sushi and not really the western rolls.

There's probably over a hundred different places within a reasonable driving distance of Huntington Beach. Of course a lot of places have to cater to local tastes and serve rolls, even when they have Japanese chefs who were clasically trained in Japan. Of course you can order whatever you want, whether it's sashimi or nigiri.

And your budget of course would be key. One could easily recommend some super high-end place where there's limited seating and the chef basically gives you what he thinks you should have. You know - the kind of place where they might fly in fish daily from Tokyo and you're looking at a set price of $150 to $250 per person. I don't typically eat at a place like that, but it's easy to recommend a place like that without considering budget.

I know of a great place near where I work in Silicon Valley. They have the freshest fish and the finest ingredients. It's owned by a family who came here from Japan and basically the family works the place with maybe some outside help. It's not super high-end where you need reservations or where they essentially have a dress code. I can afford it on my budget. They will serve rolls and stuff that isn't traditionally Japanese. They also have a wall with many different selections - all hand written by brush. It's in a nondescript strip mall with a chain drug store and located next to an independent liquor store. I think this may be the kind of place you're looking for.

Now I'm not sure what the equivalent would be in that part of Orange County. Tommy's Sushi has some of that vibe I'm thinking of. Not too expensive and authentic enough for people who order those items.

Some suggestions for more traditional, authentic sushi in Orange County:
WaSA in Irvine
Shibucho in Costa Mesa
Bluefin in Newport Beach
Maki-zushi in Tustin
Kasen in Fountain Valley (my favorite)

All of these should be found on Yelp for more info about whether the menu, vibe, and price range are to your liking.

If you are staying in Huntington Beach there are two places right off of the beach. One is on PCH right across from the pier, RA sushi bar and the other is right down the road on Main Street, Sushi on Fire. We did not go to either but both of them seemed pretty busy and had good reviews on Yelp.
