Any flexibility in checkout times?

My family and I recently rented points and stayed at AKV, which we loved! We are seriously contemplating joining the DVC, and I was curious if checkout times are flexible at all. We asked if we could checkout at noon instead of 11:00. We were going to be at the DVC tour all morning, and I was hoping my son could take a nap in the room when we got back. We were told that 11:00 was the checkout time for those staying in DVC rooms. If we weren't in a DVC room, we could definitely move checkout to noon. This doesn't really make sense to me. Are other resorts more lenient?

...and I was curious if checkout times are flexible at all.

no. they are not. not with any of the DVC resorts.

timeshares are different than hotels. they tend to operate very close to 100% occupancy, so if you stay an extra hour or so, you are almost certainly causing problems for the next arrival who was hoping to check in at least by 4pm.

hotels will generally have more flexibility.

Check in is 4PM and after a few DVC trips you start to consider it a bonus if you can check in early. Staying later may mean that someone may not be even able to check at 4PM.

DVC rooms are bigger and have more to clean. That 5 hour window is needed to clean all the rooms so that the next member can check in on time.

Busy check out/in days are Fridays and Sundays. Stay later on these days delays the next member from getting the room on time.

All you have to so is ask, the worst that can happen is they say Sorry No that is not possible.
In the past I have ALWAYS been able to extend our check out time, every single time I was granted a late check out it was at least 1pm sometimes even 2pm and it was always during prime peak season. Disney is very good about trying to please their guest and as long as everyone is not asking they may be able to work with you.

I know the non-DVC resorts are flexible and often accommodate those requests.

Were you been staying in a DVC resort when you were granted the late check outs? If so, I am very surprised to hear it. There have been many reports here of people that were told no - even when they had someone in their party who was ill.

we have been going at least twice a year since 1993 and nearly always call to extend our check out, and DH and I can only recall getting that request granted three times. We have checked out on all different days of the week, all different times of the year, and at all of the DVC resorts.

ita with others here - - rarely happens and if you remain in the villa and

don't abide by the check-out time that owner that you have rented

points from for your stay can be charged an additional day worth of

points without any notification at all to you, the renter ! Reschedule your

tour or checkout before it to avoid any issues with another day being

charged or add another day to your trip paying cash at a resort & do

tour following morning and ask them to extend your check-out on the cash room.

Thanks for the input! At least now I understand why late checkout is not really an option.

Only twice

Once when there was a severe lightning storm that lasted all morning and we couldn't pack the car. Was out by a little after noon.

Again when we were packing the car and all of a sudden the key quit working. By the time they got us a new key it was after 11am. The car was about half packed. After packing and showering it was close to 1pm.

They actually have a rule against late checkout.

As early members (1992) we were granted late check-out (1:00 pm) twice that I remember.

In the ensuing years I do not remember any time that we were able to check out late.

They actually have a rule against late checkout.

And with good reason. Fellow owners are waiting to check in! Members checking out late just make it that much less likely that the next owners checking in would get their room on time, much less early.

I oppose late check outs and am happy we have a rule against them.

The rule came about years later, maybe late 90's and due to abuses and cleaning delays.

One time we checked in and the room wasn't ready until 4. When we got into the room the carpets were soaked! Turns out that the prior guests checked out late and they shampooed the carpets and there wasn't enough time for them to dry before we arrived. I was so po'd about the prior guests leaving late because it impacted us and all I wanted was for our kids to get some rest because of waking up early to travel that day.

We actually didn't have our room ready until 6:30PM once! So please, no late check-outs, they actually affect the next guest waiting to check in.

In the end, we checked out before the tour, and went straight to the park after that. My DS just took his nap in the stroller in the park. Hopefully our early morning checkout helped the next person checking in!

Cheers! :goodvibes

During out last trip, we were gathering our luggage by the door and doing one last walk around the villa to make sure we didn't leave anything. It was a couple of minutes before 11am. At 11am on the dot, I opened the door to leave the room just as the Housekeeper was getting ready to knock. She said, "Oh! You're still in the room? Check out is at 11am." I said, "We're leaving right now." She didn't even let us get out the door, she walked by us and our luggage and began to clean the room. So yes, they are very serious about that 11am check out time! :rotfl:

I always try to clear out of my room as early as possible, store the bags with bell services and let the front desk know so that housekeeping can get started early. I think of it as passing on some pixie dust...
Then we can hit a park or shop until we need to leave for the airport.
I think of our resort as our community, and I try to show my repect for the other owners by making sure I don't impact their stay negatively. Do unto others, right?
Obviously, if someone has a legitimate problem, I am not going to begrudge them extending their stay a few hours. Luckily I have never had one, and over the years I have spent some pleasant hours sitting in the lobby or the lounge or on the porch waiting for my airport pickup time rather than keeping the room longer than I needed it.
I want to thank the op for asking in the first place, for understanding and abiding the check out time even though it was inconvenient. It shows respect for the rest of us.

I agree. There is not much worse than sitting there waiting for your room. I am one of those travelers that likes to get settled right away and then go about my business. That's probably why I will likely never do a split-stay. :sad2:

I understand that some people may need a later checkout time due to illness, etc. However, I think it is inconsiderate if someone is requesting a late checkout for insignificant reasons like they have a late flight, they want to sleep later, etc.

To those of you (like me) who stick with the rules -- I sincerely thank you.
