Our Bichon cried all night the first night but we didn't have a crate. The next day we got a crate and he did fine in it. My DD just put the crate on her bed. Once he got reasonably house trained she let him sleep with her
Now he will not sleep in his crate and will not sleep alone. He cries if he gets tired and no one has gone to bed for him to join. Thankfully Bichons don't get very big and don't shed so he's not bad to have in the bed. He's also a very heavy sleeper which means he sleeps great but if he happens to fall asleep where you'd like some space very hard to move.
