Well it is official. DH and I are moving to upstate New York. More specifically, the Lake Placid/Saranac Lake area.

With everything going on, it was perfect timing!! DH got a great job offer and we absolutely love the area, even the snowy winters (good reason to go to my beloved DVC more often in the winter :goodvibes). More importantly, we just loved the friendliness of everyone that we have come across during our visits.

Any fellow DVCer's from the area??? Just want to know if I have any "family" in the area who can give me any info.

One thing I do know, it definately won't be as easy to fly into Orlando as it is now; guess I will just have to plan differently and since I plan out my DVC vacations two years ahead, that won't be an issue for me :rotfl:. Right now we are only 20 minutes from an airport that provides direct flights to MCO!! But as long as the end result is the same and I get to my beloved DVC , that is really all that matters in the planning!!

Not upstate but CNY. We are about 3 to 4 hours from there! Welcome to the land of the cold and snow!!!

Not in NY, but Vermont. I take southwest out of Albany on a non stop flight to MCO, easy airport and the prices aren't too bad compared to some of the smaller airports.
Anyway, welcome to the north country. PS for a great family time in the summer go to Saratoga Racetrack.:cool1: Its a blast!

We are about an hour from the city so not upstate..but visit the Lake Placid area!! You will love it... You will also have plenty of snow to love!! Welcome to NY!!

Welcome to NY, we are in Northern New York, at the foot hills of the Adirondacks. We are more summer/fall visitors to Saranac/Lake Placid.

My mom is originally from a small town near Plattsburgh. I used to go up there every year. It is a nice area just to cold for me

That's great to know especially since I like to get to my DVC as much as I possibly can!!

We are very excited; snow, cold and all.

Thanks

Totally agree with going to the Saratoga Race Course. It is a blast. Another option if you don't want to drive to Albany to catch a Southwest flight to MCO, look into Cape Air out of Saranac Lake. Nonstop to Boston where you can get flights to MCO. One way fares from Saranac Lake to Boston are only about $50 in the fall/winter.

Welcome to upstate NY!

We are from Syracuse NY area too :) I see you have a trip home in a few months...enjoy!

OP, welcome to upstate NY.

The Olympic venues are in Lake Placid and are still active. The bobsled and luge competitions are awesome! The Olympic spirit is very much alive throughout the area.

Saranac Lake has a winter carnival every February, with 10 days of all kinds of activities. An ice castle is built on the shores of Lake Flower, matching the theme of the carnival, which for 2012 is Space Alien Invasion! LOL! There is a parade that is always so much fun. It's a great time.

Hiking, canoeing, skiing, skating, snowshoeing--the list goes on and on. And the beautiful scenery year round is the best!

There is always something going on--yesterday there was a bike race in Saranac Lake, and over the weekend, there was a half and full marathon in Lake Placid.
:thumbsup2

Welcome to the Adirondacks!! We live in Jay - about 15 miles east of Lake Placid. We've been DVC members since 1993 and still love it! Gong for two weeks in December. You can find direct flights to Orlando from Burlington, VT Jet Blue) or Albany (Southwest). Allegiant Air also flies out of Plattsburgh with direct flights - into Sanford - not a great flight schedule but it is a direct flight. Direct Air just started direct flights from Plattsburgh to Lakeland.

See, you will not be THAT isolated!! :):) It's a great place to live, thought the winters can be long!

Feel free to PM me with any questions!

Not that far north but the Saratoga Springs area. We have family across the lake in the Burlington, Vermont area too. They fly to Orlando via Jet Blue out of Burlington.

Welcome...We're from Syracuse area as well. Love our DVC!!! Flew Jet Blue a few times, been driving lately....not our favorite thing, but we like to be in control. Hate going home during the winter. In Feb. it was beautiful in the south, coming home as soon as we hit the PA/NY border it was nasty!!!

Driving down again in Dec. for Christmas...:santa:

I really hope you enjoy the snow, but i think the area you're moving into gets it a little less than central NY. I live just north of Syracuse in the Oswego county, and we get hammered! You'll definitely appreciate your DVC then! :thumbsup2

From the Rochester area here (Honeoye Falls to be exact), but grew up near Oswego. You will be out of the snowbelt but it will get very chilly up there.:cold:

We love to go to WDW during President's week (school break). That 40 degree temperature differential really feels good!:sunny: I bet it would be even larger for you!

We would go camping/canoeing in the ADK every summer. Loved it. Lake Placid has some great horse shows too!

Saranac Lake does get lake-effect snow, and is often one of the coldest places in the country. Very changeable weather. It's difficult to get an accurate forecast--but that's part of the charm! :lovestruc

So excited to be getting all these responses from my fellow upstate DVC'ers!! Keep them coming!! We can deal with the cold and snow; the beauty of the area is overwhelming!

BUT of course there is always the next DVC trip to dream about::dance3:

Welcome to our world. Like you said you will enjoy sunny Florida even more now

Also from Rochester (Greece) Jealous of your new surroundings..spent countless summers at Blue Mt. Lake. Would love to move to the ADKs someday.

Wow...look at all of us from good ol' Syracuse! We fly Jetblue as well and did the drive a few times, never again if I can help it.

Yeah, this winter was a bear and I am so glad it is over. Counting the days though until we head to Disney. School is almost over for me so that will really make me excited to keep the count down!
