We live in a house that's about 45 years old and our furnace is original, but in great working condition. Last end of June, we had our whole basement spray painted, ceiling and all. It was easier to use a sprayer than a paint brush. They closed the vent down there and turned the A/C off.

Then this past October, when we turned our heat on, we noticed a paint like smell if you would stand right in front of a vent for about 3-5 seconds. We have had 2 very good heating companies come out 3 times and they all say our furnace is working great and there are no problems.

Is it possible that some how paint got into the furnace or a vent and is making it smell bad? If so, is that dangerous for us to breathe that in all day and night? It didn't smell bad all Summer with our A/C, just our heat. That doesn't make any sense? :confused3 Maybe it's not the paint?

TIA!

If your furnas is a hot air system perhaps some paint got into the air filter. I think your painter tried to avoid this by turning it off during painting. I'm shure your burner technition changed it. The air intake may be taking in paint vapors, even new dry paint smells for a while. If you are worrying about health find out what kind of paint it is. This problem may just go away over time. Now that said Make Shure your furnas is in good condition If it an old hot air unit it should checked to see if the firebox is leaking combustion gasses. I,m not trying to scare you I just think a furnas that old needs to be checked. Do you have a C/O dector? If not a good quality one will give you some piece of mind.
