Any DVC teachers out there???

My own kids (teens) are too cool these days to be enchanted by Disney trips, so I look forward to seeing the little ones dressed up in the parks. Watching them adds so much to my vacations!

Me! I even teach PRE-K! Also, I have a houseful of kids of my own and take my 2 grandkids with me on just about every trip. I'm just a big kid myself anyway. But we do always have at least one adults only meal with our adult children while on vacation. The teens stay in the villa with the grandkids while we eat at the signature restaurant at whichever resort we are staying in during that trip.

Frankly, I'm not really interested in so-called adult venues. I don't care for gambling and we aren't the nightclub type. Not knocking it, it's just that those activities don't interest me. Most things we do, we do with our kids.

I'm also a teacher, although I'm not technically a DVC teacher yet, as DW and I are still very early in our careers and can't afford it yet. Once we get some of our debt paid off, saving up for DVC is the next priority!

We live in California, and I teach 5th grade and DW teaches 6th grade. We work in the same district, but different schools.

I am a junior high science teacher. (We have one contract at VWL, buying another contract at VWL, and selling one at OKW.) I am lucky to have a teacher across the hall that loves Disney as much as I do. She hasn't bought into DVC yet though...I'm working on that.

My wife is going bac kt o school to be a teacher. For those that have traditional school years (Christmas break, spring, break, summer holidays July/Aug) do you feel restricted in your holidays by only being able to travel during peak seasons? We're travelling to WDW from teh west coast so when we go it's for at least a week and usually a bit more so quick long weekends don't work.

We'll still go, and her being a teacher will be great for other reasons (summers off with the kids etc.) but I think I will regret losing the freedom to travel when we want to through the year.

Any thoughts or opinions?

I teach elementary and DH is a HS teacher and consultant, up here in Saskatchewan, Canada and just bought DVC this winter. We're taking our first DVC trip in August.

With a traditional school year and such a long distance to travel we find it's just not worth it to go for short trips. There is NO freedom in holiday time. but what we lose in flexibility we make up for with lots of holiday time (way more than any other job I know). Yes, all the breaks are at peak season and air fare is expensive, so you might as well make it worth it. When we travel to DL we stay at least a week, WDW is a minimum 10 day trip. If you stay that long you forget about touring in the midday heat, relax in the mid day and enjoy your mornings and evenings.

High School Alternative Ed teacher here out in SoCal.

So far, we've traveled over winter break, spring break, and Thanksgiving break. Next summer, DH and I are taking the Alaskan cruise, can't wait!

I teach high school chemistry in Minnesota. We get 2 days of for a professional conference in October. I take my 3 personal days and head to Disney for a week.

I have Disney all over my classroom. Bulletin boards, magnets, etc... The students always say "Wow, Ms. D you sure like Disney a lot"

Count us in! I'm a Teachers aide for an elementary alternative school and my DH is the Music Director at the same school. I think being DVC members helps us get through the year knowing we'll be going on break or in the summer! It's our Happy Place.

I teach high school in NC and I'm a Disney Nut. I often use Disney illustrations to relate my subject matter to my students - even in high school they enjoy it. I've had teachers tell me that my DD, who is 5, will grow out of Disney soon and then I will have joined DVC for nothing. My response is my husband and I are in our 30s and we've never out grown it

It can definitely be a drag, especially because our favorite time of year to go is early/mid Dec. The weather is amazing, the crowds are light, and the holiday atmosphere is ethereal. Unfortunately, we can only go for 5 days and that's using up all 3 personal days we have. It's not nearly long enough and every other "break" is peak time, which means the most expensive airfare (somtimes triple the cost) and the heaviest crowds. I can't complain too much though, because we'll be in FL from 6/23-7/26. It's ungodly hot, but it's something we've grown somewhat accustomed to. I would LOVE to be on a year round schedule, but they would never do that here. Too many dual income families here that would rather work insane hours and sit in traffic for the almighty dollar.

What she said!!!! We'd like to find some time to get away for more than 5 days/4 nights at a time. But when??

I'm an elementary music teacher that owns at VWL, BWV, and VGC. In my classroom, I have a shelf of various Mickey Mouses? Mickey Mice? (I buy a new one every trip) and the wall above my desk sports a giant WDW Memories collage poster and a calendar I made from Shutterfly. My desktop on my computer (which my kids always see b/c we use our projection system every day) is usually a Disney related photo. The kids also know that the room goes into total lockdown if I can't find my Mickey Mouse pencil.

We have a lot of families in our school who vacation regularly at WDW. Very few of them even know about DVC, though. When I tell them, they stare at me blankly and ask "But isn't that expensive?" Everyone thinks I'm a little crazy for going so often and those that plan trips always complain about how much it costs. I just calmly explain that that's why you don't see me driving a Lexus SUV or carrying Coach bags like so many people in my community do.

I think one reason I enjoy teaching is that I've been able to hang on to the kid inside me. And Disney is all about appealing to the kid inside me! We're a match!

My husband and daughter are both teachers in MA. We have been members since 1991 and the only reaction we've ever received is envy!!! A lot of teachers here own timeshares (not all are DVC members, but some are) and a ton go to Disney often. I don't think you can be a teacher if you don't like kids. We've always vacationed during peak times so that's all we know. My hubby is "retired" at the end of this year (after 38 years at the HS we both attended!!) and going to work for a private school in September, so we'll still be tied to a school schedule. We are so use to it that we don't mind. I have to say the only time we mind kids (and that's badly behaved ones) is when we are out at restaurants at night be it at Disney or anywhere else in the world. Maybe because my husband is a teacher, we taught our own children to behave wherever we went.
